Driver vs Driver 2

Wilson dropping the ball big time by not implementing some of their own tennis racket technology to help drive the narrative. Or the “Duke” name. Very strong in those categories and can’t do anything to drive the story? Wilson great in baseball as well. Own a few bat companies.... not sure why they can’t figure this out.. create the narrative and explain away the commoditized technology from their.

Demarini Drivers.... the best baseball bats the best drivers. Who knows more about trampoline ?

These ideas are brilliant! Wilson should pay attention to these suggestions.

I've been watching the show every week, I must admit I love it. I like seeing the process of creating the new driver and every steps with it.

From my point of view, the best driver of the Final Four is without a doubt the Cortex. It looks good, it sounds good and the technology is simple to adjust for everyday golfers.

I know it's been mentioned everywhere it looks like a mix of an Epic and a M1. But is that a bad thing? those were two of the best drivers made when they came out. Now we could get one that sort of combined the two together from a completely different company.

Also, Wilson Staff started putting a leaderboard on Twitter after the shows. Check this out:

the problem is that looks is almost as important as performance when someone buys a club. maybe more so for initial interest.

I always go back to the Ping Anser when somebody says this.

People forget that when the Anser came out people thought it looked 'ugly' because it was not like your typical putters at the time (8802, George Low Wizard, Bullseye). But, after a while people started to see the benefit of perimeter weighting, the plumbers neck, etc. and all of the sudden it became 'beautiful.' Now there's probably not an OEM or boutique putter maker that does not have an Anser model available.

It's one thing if the head is too closed or open as that affects alignment and possibly impact conditions. But, if it truly performs better and just looks odd...golfers will learn to adjust if the marketing of the product is there.

Even the box shaped driver was not a failure by any means. A ton of them were sold. But, OEM's started to figure out how to sell similar performing drivers that were pear shaped, so there was no need for the box shaped driver. And eventually OEM's started to change the CG location with drivers and add carbon fiber to the head and thus from a performance perspective the box shaped driver was rendered obsolete. But, it still didn't stop people from buying them in droves when they first came out.

I dont disagree with your point, other than the ping anser was an almost instant success.

I learned something very interesting yesterday. There is a 5 month filming gap between each episode and it took 15 months to film. the winning club has been developed and will hit shelves on NOV 14th. after being announced on the 13th.

Yeah, I think it's brilliant, but risky at the same time.

With the pro shops and golf stores receiving the driver before the winner is announced, I don't know how Wilson Staff will prevent a leak before the actual reveal.

Wilson is more concerned with getting a great driver made and USGA conforming than ratings for a TV show if the winner leaks

i dont know how they will do it. i am sure it will get leaked no matter what. But the sales director for wilson does not know what driver as won at this point. so it is pretty hush hush.

He should have checked into the name a bit more. When I hear cortex, I immediately think of Babolat tennis racquets. They’ve used cortex for over a decade.

Maybe to someone who knows tennis that well...so that's a tiny number.

TaylorMade chose M3, which is a BMW model; Wilson have V6 irons, which is an engine design; Callaway chose Big Bertha which was a large artillery gun.

Etc etc etc

Wouldn’t that make it a total of only 4 episodes?

I think they should keep tennis and golf separate in branding etc. When I think of tennis and the Wilson brand, I think of "blood, sweat and tears", shoes and socks covered in red clay, a sport of endurance and power. It is an image far removed from the image of golf in my opinion and thus, trying to mix those two is difficult and even counterproductive. (I'm not saying either image is better)

He’s made it this far only because Wilson and the Golf Channel thinks he will have a mental breakfown if he doesn’t keep going

The dialshot getting axed in the last episode was an easy one for them. I’m actually interested in a few of the remaining heads.

What I’m wondering though from watching these last few testing episodes is the faces of the drivers. Does anyone know what kind of tech is being implemented with the faces of these drivers? It seems difficult for these guys to differentiate themselves if it’s all the same Wilson driver face with different bodies

Catching up on this show right now. Everyone loves the Cortex, but it looks too much like the Epic/Rogue. Gotta differentiate yourself a little more. Shiels only hit it 270 yards and he's at least 300 on youtube with other drivers.

When they are at the PGA show, the tracer has the balls going straight up in the air. Why? It makes it look like the ball isn't going anywhere.

That stuff is a trade secret. Can’t reveal everything.

They changed the Cortex already. No longer looks so much like an Epic.

Adam's longest drive was 314 with the Magnus, yet Roenick said it was 292. Hmmmm.

Wind on the range is giving them 50 yards of roll. Smash factors haven't been great on the drivers so far outside of the Magnus.

Watching live at the moment and it looks like the swing speeds have varied widely even among shots by the same player.

The second guy (didn't catch name) was between 110 and 118. That's going to create wild variations in results outside of smash factor.

That must be it. With that said, dialing in the smash factor for the driver is something that takes time from an engineering standpoint. I'd imagine the Wilson engineers will fix that in the coming episodes.

I thought the Cortex was going to be the runaway winner, but now it looks like it's last and Jimmy's driver is coming out on top. Please, don't let him win!
