Joe Dante Wrist Action on Backswing

Recommended Posts

Why is the Joe Dante's move of bending the right wrist back on the backswing considered to not be a good method by many instructors? Most instructors advocate having the thumbs c0ck up on the backswing. I know one of the potential problems is going too inside on the backswing, but I didn't have that issue today.

I tried Dante's method today and iron distances were going 10 to 15 yards further with much tighter dispersion. With the traditional wrist action of c0cking the thumbs up, my misses are a push or a hook. With the Dante method I didn't have any pushes at all today and only had two hooked shots.

For what its worth, Dante's wrist bend helped my game with more swing consistency.

Yea, I actually first tried using this when I was into Tony Luczak's approach (emphasizing the right, or trail, hand in the swing). I will say that I found it gave me MUCH better contact, it was basically a revelation.

Now don't misunderstand me, I'm NOT saying square-to-square is a panacea, or a must or magic move. There are trade-offs involved and they vary I guess depending on your physical characteristics and swing tendencies. First, TGM and Malaska (Larry Rinker upper core too) basically teach an "L-to-L" swing which has as one of its features the "wrist roll", which is supposed to give more club head speed, hence more distance. You don't get that with the square-to-square approach. Jim Hardy's two-plane also uses a wrist roll, and it's generally (oh boy, I'm setting myself up to get flamed) agreed that if you can get the timing down then you will get more club head speed, hence distance, and many golfers have no issue being successful with it. I did, so the square-to-square suits me better but I don't hit the ball as far (with the wrist roll and good contact my distance is pathetic, with the square-to-square it's beyond pathetic :) ). However, I LOVE the solid contact sound I get with the square-to-square.

Never heard of this guy. Thanks. Some one out there said it was a little like the A Swing by leadbetter but the only thing it reminds me of his, is the grip. After that it’s a completely different animal. Ordered Dante’s book .

I have been slowly figuring out how to set the club earlier. For me it’s a little of the r hand hinge and a little of the l wrist cokk. I tend to do the r hand hinge a little later. That seems to help me shallow in transition.

Perhaps the clubface is squarer where it was once open? I find the rotate the left arm motion to set the club always threw it inside for me.

If the wrist actions and feels are that the right wrist ‘hinges’ backwards, and the left wrist ‘cocks’ up, then my wrist set feel is that of the opposite function for each: right wrist cocking the club up.

If I feel right wrist hinges back, not up, it goes inside.

I have Dantes book and what I have concluded about his wrist action is that it will only be successful if the pivot accommodates it.If you stall flip naturally and utilize his wrist action you'll be shanking and pull hooking like crazy. Also, his wrist action when done correctly does not whip the club and shaft to the inside. The premature forearm rotation causes that more than anything.
