Taylormade to Titleist Adapter Questions

JLew

Recommended Posts

I've searched this a lot and seem to be finding conflicting answers.

I have a few shafts I want to swap from a Tmag adapter to the Titleist adapter and try in a new head.

Couple questions I have that I'm hoping someone here knows the answer to...

1. What is the depth of the shaft in the Tmag adapter vs. the Titleist? Will there be any existing prep showing? Does the depth affect playing length?

2. Does Tmag tip any of their shafts and is Titleist still in the practice of doing so? Will they not play true to flex in the Titleist?

Thanks.

You should be fine. TM adapters vary a little but generally will cover up ~1.5" of the shaft tip with both the adapter and ferrule. Titleist has an insertion depth of 1-3/8" without the ferrule - and while I don't have a Titleist ferrule on hand to measure, I know it's more than 1/8" in length. So it will cover up more than the TM adapter install.

The difference is really in the ferrule so has no effect on the playing characteristics of the shaft.

As far as playing length goes, it's the specific model head that matters (not the adapter). Most TM drivers have a BBGM of 1.75" with an occasional one with 2.0" (last one I'm aware of was the RBZ Tour although there were some questions about one of the M2's). Most of the more modern Titleist drivers are also 1.75" but some of the models are (have been) 1.5" - so you could potentially lose 1/4" in playing length with certain combinations.

2. Does Tmag tip any of their shafts and is Titleist still in the practice of doing so? Will they not play true to flex in the Titleist?

TM has been tipping all non-OEM shafts 1" in their driver since about the release of the SLDR (although customers can make custom orders to change that amount to more or less). And that, of course, assumes the adapter was installed at the TM factory and not by some 3rd party.

Titleist tips 1/2" for some, but not all shafts. They started by tipping all shafts for the 910 but each release after that they cut back some. And the list of which gets tipped and which do not seems to change from year to year. So it's not an easy question to answer definitely without a lot more details.

But the important thing is that neither designs usually warrant any tipping and the decision to tip should be made based on the player actually testing the shafts in question in the heads - at the desired length and swing weight and not based on the practices of the factories.

Thanks, Stuart.

So, making sure I understand. If the TM shafts were ordered .5" soft (less tipping) from the TM factory, then they would probably play close to the same as what Titleist produces from their factory, after the tips are swapped?

And if they were ordered "standard" from TM, then they will likely play slightly stiffer than what Titliest produces from their factory?

Thanks.

It depends on the particular shaft model. For some, that would be true. But there are many shafts that Titleist no longer does any tipping on for the driver. So for those particular models, you'd have to order from TM 1.0" soft (less tipping) to play the same as if it had been ordered from Titleist. That's assuming all the other specs are the same (e.g. playing length and total head weight).

Is there a list of this anywhere? The specific shafts I'm looking to test are the GD AD-DI, AD-TP, and Mitsu Pro Orange.

No. Best resource for that info tends to be the Team Titleist Forum - either post a new question or search for someone who already asked about a particular shaft.

Is the shaft with a TM adapter a shaft you've played in a TM head? If you already have the shaft in hand and just want to switch it over, what the Titleist factory might do is really irrelevant.
