Forged Players Shovel

Recommended Posts

Is AP2 the right head for you? The older models are easy to find on eBay.

I just picked up a set of Apex CF16. Very clicky. Think I'm going to blend them with an old set of Titleist 775.CB forged stainless.

Maybe consider AP1 710 with the graphite shaft. Don't think they're forged but feel great.

You get the I200 from Ping and you might not go back to your Bridgestones when you're fully recovered.

Given the fact you currently play B’stone, a logical, more forgiving option would be a set of the J40DPC’s(really shocked this hasn’t been suggested yet).

Minimal offset, very forgiving, nice leading edge grind and the sweet feel of Bridgestone Forgings.

There’s a reason they are a cult classic.

Lol the guy is asking about forged shovels and he is getting suggestions for AP2's and DPC's? I've played both and they are not in the least bit shovely. Srixon 585's fit the bill

Tom Wishon 565MC Forged Irons. http://wishongolf.com/designs/iron-sets/new-565mc-forged-irons/ With his Black 85 Graphite shafts. http://wishongolf.com/designs/shafts/s2s-black-85-gold-85-iron-shafts/

Fantastic head and shaft combination, very reasonably priced and I don't think you can buy a much better head and shaft combination unless you spend way much more money. Find a fitter that works with TW or get set up so you can buy the components yourself.

Another vote for the Ping JSpec Rapture V2's.

Not exactly Forged but has a Titanium face. Definitely fits the shovel category.

I play a set of these and they are somewhat of a Unicorn in a few ways. Power Spec lofts before there were power spec lofts, extreme forgiveness with a lower offset a better player would prefer. Perfect for my hack Game. :smilie_ping:

Found some info on them from a few years back.

Ping Japan releases another Rapture J, the V2, again with less offset and 1 * stronger lofts:

Ping Japan introduces their all new Rapture V2 J iron for 2009! The Rapture V2 J is specifically made for the Japanese market. It features less offset than the US model and 1* stronger lofts.

Engineered to bring golfers maximum forgiveness, the Rapture V2 iron relies on multi-metal technology to launch the ball longer, higher and with more accuracy. A dense tungsten sole weight positions the center of gravity low and away from the face to optimize the launch conditions. An innovation made possible by the lightweight titanium face that frees weight for where it's needed most-low and on the perimeter.

The high launch angle allows for stronger lofts so golfers can generate greater distance without sacrificing control. The Custom Tuning Port stabilizes the titanium face to help ensure a solid feel and consistency.

Personally I think I'd go with a second set of J15 CB's, or potentially Hogan PTX and Mizzy 900 Forged. The Apex might be my choice after those. The J15 CB's IMO were as forgiving as anything, and felt better than any of the current players cavity or shovels. The only potential knocks on them is I found them a little shorter than some other options - which might matter to you as you recover from shoulder surgery, and for me the only thing I really struggled with was when I wanted to flight them down.

For me the 900 Forged were the perfect combination of every item category - They were as long as anything I'd hit, forgiveness on par with the J15 CB (and anything else), almost as easy to work the ball for me as blades (Now, for me working the ball with irons consists of hitting it lower than my normal very high ball flight or hitting a draw, and these shots were on demand. Cutting my iron shots is a bit harder for me so I dont even try it anymore), all with a decent feel. Limited time with my Buddy's Hogan PTX reminds me of the JPX 900 forged.

I think that this is the first time I have ever read that the J15CB's were shorter than expected. If anything, they are longer than most options, including some of the so called distance irons. Hitting a punch shot is how you flight something down, and it really doesn't matter if you're playing a blade or TM M4's or whatever. There is a review on youtube comparing the J15CB's to the Mizuno JPX 850 forged in where the tester actually got faster ball speeds from the J15 than the JPX 850.

There is no better forged shovel than the Maltby MMB-17. It's big dimensionally for a blade with a surprisingly large amount of forgiveness. You can impress your buddies you are still gaming a blade but get away with a lot of forgiveness. Even if you buy them brand new right now they are still cheaper than someone's used clubs.

If you really look at the way they are built they are closer to a cavity back in where the weight is on these irons. 4c51721ee0927b6f85a64cb666e0a301.jpg

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been hitting the Mizuno 919 forged at the local golf store. Balls are hot off the face and the clubs feel like butter. I love them!

The 919 forged are probably the best all around iron I've ever hit. Not super GI forgiveness but still plenty of it. Great classic mizuno feel and not bad at all to look at. The more I play them the more I like them.
