Westwood and Foster split. Foster to McIlroy?

The news has come out that Lee Westwood and Billy Foster have split after 10 years together.

Foster is a great caddie. There is some speculation that Foster could caddie for Rory next year. I think this would be an excellent move for Rory to get a serious seasoned caddie back on the bag to help him refocus his game and get back to playing his best golf.

As great as it could be for both parties, Rory fired the caddie who told him to "Get a f****ng grip, you're Rory McIlroy" as he was four putting his way to a missed cut at The Open. After that exchange, McIlroy woke up, played like Rory McIlroy and made the cut.

 

So a caddie that would be honest with him probably isn't something he'd consider regardless of whether what's said is applicable or not.

 

Also, changing caddie would mean he'd have to admit his pal isn't up to the job. It took him 3.5 years of missing putts low to get a putting lesson due to his stubbornness and public protestations that he was putting just fine.

 

If there was an issue with Harry it'd be late '21 before a change happens.

Haha Rory and his mate are on a holiday of a lifetime, regardless of if he makes the cut or not they're both living the best life.

 

Billy would kick Rory's a** into shape and would take no sh*t so Rory would hate to work with him.

Interesting. I think Billy Foster would be a great benefit for Rory, but doubt Rory would employ him.

 

In golfing circles where I grew up, Billy Foster was a bit of a local legend. Whenever Seve was doing well, the town newspaper would write as much about BF as Seve's golf.*

I have caddied in Pro Ams' where one player literally wanted a mule....carry the bag. Say nothing and don't touch any of the clubs. Another had full cord grips and came out with the statement "don't touch my grips, you could upset the oils!!"...while we see it as a glamorous role there must be a lot of lows as well.

Rory might be one of the most talented players on the planet but there is no guarantee Billy Foster would make any difference to his game at the moment in the same way that Westwood actually got better having basically a club carrier rather than caddie.

He also did a night at my club a couple of months ago, I wasnt going to miss that, great night, the stories he's able to tell are hilarious, and yes very blue!

I think Westwood's caddie is more like "Keep up, put out, and shut up".

 

Really I think it's good for the player to have a caddie with less input. Read their own putts. Make their own club decisions. But definitely want someone that is on time and doesn't say the wrong thing.
