Best 3 wood

Kaexo

Recommended Posts

just made an extreme upgrade from V Steel 15º + Accra Tour Z ST to 917 F3 15º + Atmos Black Tour Spec.

almost same size heads, same loft.

result: couldn't be happier. loving 917 F3 in many ways.

love classic gem like V Steel, but also gotta love modern technology—whatever that means—on the newer FW.

i suspect that my swing has gotten better while i was testing things around, tho?

I’ve played the 2016 M2 since it came out. I’ve hit everything on the monitor and range since it came out, nothing has beat it.

THEN, yesterday i hit the 15* TS2. Wow.

My pro had to beg me to hit it, as I’m not a Titleist guy at all. I was shocked to say the least. I’m waiting to hit it again off the turf when the wind isn’t howling, but i will be ordering one ASAP.

It was just as long as my M2 but i hit it straighter and higher. I think titleist has upped their game with the TS line.

Tour Edge EXS! Finally a 3 wood I can hit longer, straighter and airborne; also good on the occasional trouble shot. And affordable.
Which shaft? I had it with the blue 60s but mine broke after 3 hits, the reshafted it and my club cave back with a big scratch on the crown and the ferrule was messy so I sent it back again, they have me my money back but I did like it

M2 has a Bassara 83 x flex. Had it fit in after spraying the stock shaft some. Its a bomber.

I demoed in the TS2 the stock Tensei blue 65 gram and the HZRDS Smoke. I hit the standard stiff flex Tensei the best, which surprised me. I was getting the same length as my M2 with added height, which I prefer if hitting off the deck. And I hit my 3 wood off the deck more times than not if I am hitting it.

I would hit the TS2. In the past, I looked over any Titleist FW woods completely. I think that is changing.

For me it's the Callaway XR16 standard head with a Fubuki Ax f65. But I recently picked up a Callaway BBA 816 14* head to try. Partly just to try it, but also for the adjustability. Right now I choose between my XR16 5 wood and an Apex 20* hybrid. I could possibly crank the loft up on the BBA to a strong 4 wood along with the 20* hybrid and see if the gapping is better.

To add to my original post, I could not pass up a crazy good deal on a Callaway GBB 15* head. So have the BBA 816 & GBB heads to test against the XR16.

The only thing was I wasn't able to find a Fubuki Ax new or used, so I bought a used Adams XTD Super Fairway that came stock with that shaft. But the way the graphics line up next to my XR16, I have to assume it went straight in to the Adams originally. The one in my XR16 was tipped a 1/2 inch. Later I did find a Fubuki Ax f65 new uncut. But that is waiting patiently for a standard Rogue 3 wood head. It never ends......

Same answer I have posted in every thread like this for 10 years.

Adams Redline 5050 with Matrix Code-8 shaft.

The first fairway wood with a deep face that I could elevate off the deck. Off the tee, it is a fairway finder for me.

Usually hit everything that comes out from Titleist, Callaway, TM and Ping, and nothing has managed to kick the Adams out of the bag.

And yes, I have several backup heads just in case...

Old stuff:
1962 Tommy Armour AT2W Driver   1953 Macgregor M65W EOM 3 wood   1978 H&B PowerBilt Citation 4 wood
1984 Ben Hogan Apex PC 2-E   1968 Wilson Dual Wedge
1964 Acushnet O-SET M6S Bullseye Putter

New stuff
Cobra ZL 10.5 driver (Matrix HD6 s-flex)  Titleist TSR2 18* fairway wood (Matrix Code-8 s-flex)   Adams A2P 20* hybrid (Rombax 8D07HB s-flex)
Titleist 716 MB irons 4-PW (Apex 4 soft-stepped)    Callaway Mack Daddy wedges 52, 56, 60 (DG S200)

It was an M1. For a long time. Then I decided I had to match my Epic SZ driver. 3 clubs later, I’m back to Taylormade. M3. Better than M1 as I don’t have the random tug hook. Better than all the in between 3wds as I don’t fight from being on the left side of the course all the time.

Possibly the best 3 wood I’ve ever had. So much so that I got the 5 wood. Same specs. Yet I hate that thing. Straight pushes every time. Can’t explain it.

What is everyones thoughts on the current best 3 wood with the new releases that have came out?

old school here... my gamer is either an old 200 series TM 3 wood everything stock or a TM RBZ Stage 2 Tour set at 15* std lie... funny thing is my son apparently takes after his Dad cuz he has had the same fairway wood in his bag for at least 20 yrs... an old steel shafted Callaway Warbird 4 wood and he hits it freaking forever... really long and straight.. to each his own I guess

Peace

G400 SFT and G400 both with Tour 75 stiff came today. Tomorrow comes first shoot out at range.

Alpha 815 vs g400 sft vs g400

Just got back from range. G400 SFT with Tour 75s is leader of pack so far. Just super consistent. Need to hit off turf with some of my balls but from a consistency stand point it's in the early lead.

I just picked up a new G SFT 16* to test out, for some reason I like the stretched, low profile. The increased size gives some people fits, but I'm really excited to give it a whirl.

Just replaced my 917F2 that I cracked with... another 917F2.

Love the ability to play a fade setup with weights and surefit!

The TS2 is slightly longer, but the extra distance isn’t worth losing the ability to throw the weight out in the toe.

For that, the 917F2 is just an outstanding fit.

Most everyone will tell you it’s the one currently in their bag haha. It’s going to be different for everyone, and depends on what you’re looking for specifically, but you’d be silly not to try them all. If resources and/or time are limited, I’m gonna suggest the Srixon F85. Their new line is phenomenal, and as usual, their fairway woods will fall under the radar. They are as good, if not better, than anything out.

I’ve seen people say it sits closed. Do you find that to be the case? I haven’t been able to look at one yet.

Well G400 SFT is not for me. 50/50 decent shots. Hit a few hooks and some high spin shots. Easy to hit but left on course is an issue. I'm sure it was my swing but on to test g400 3 wood now.
