What is your favorite set of "signature" or player endorsed blades?

If they are like the set pictured by Jiggered above then I would.

These were a surprise to me. I bought mine just because they were vintage, in good condition and not alot of money; more of a collecting buy. I had no real expectation of their playability but really like them. As said above, they sit just right for me - the putter too!

Pity the set you are looking at doesn't have the SW. I nearly lodged the ball in my left nostril when I first played mine! 🙂

When I got mine they were 3 to wedge (retriever) but I've since added the 2 iron and 1, 2 and 3 woods and I have two putters, the blade type and the one similar to a Goose but flat on top.

Just recently I found a sand wedge and when I got it I thought that the loft must be wrong but from what you say about hitting the ball up your nostril, maybe not, I measured the loft roughly at around 60 or 61 degrees!

There are several versions available so it depends which ones you're looking at, where you are will also be a factor as different countries made different versions, and I think there were other lines apart from Dunlop. I'm based in the UK and the below pictures are the versions I've recorded.

Below in order are:

  1. Mark 1 - Excellent as described by Foozle and I agree with him.
  2. Contour Sole - Similar to Mark 1, I've not played them but imagine they're good.
  3. Unsure on this one, I've only seen it posted from America but looks good.
  4. Mark V - UK model
  5. Mark V - Australian model
  6. Mark VI
  7. Last version, I have a set and they play well, can be found easily in the UK

Jiggered, thanks for the loft measurement. Sounds right to me!

Interested in the "retriever"? Is it marked as such per Hogan Equaliser?

I think my set is 2-10 +SW along with the blade style putter.

Yes, they look like the Mark 1, these came out in 1957.

I'm intrigued by the small circle and dot on the sole in line with the hosel, I've not seen that before and it makes me wonder if these are produced outside of the UK, where are you based Moeinorman?

Afraid I can't help as to the playability of the Spalding Greg Norman.

It's not all about the score.

Yes, it's named on the back of the head, if you look at the picture below it's the bottom club and where the upper ones read "Stainless", this one reads "Retriever", the sole is blank apart from the "Dunlop Gt Britain" in the usual place.

The advert from a Swedish golf magazine below (May 1957) shows the full line up and discusses the retriever, which I translated using an App as;

PETER THOMSON'S famous RETRIEVER

"RETRIEVER No club is more individual than Peter Thomson's Retriever. Built on the wedge principle, it's rigid shaft gives excellent control over the ball, the loft and weight ratio are ideal for you to fully master difficult situations and shots.

The "Retriever" is another result of Peter Thomson's experience from games around the whole world when failure could have cost him the Championships that he won again and again."

I bet your 10 iron has the same loft and characteristics, put some lead tape over the "Stainless" and paint "Retriever" on it. 🙂

I've never seen that model, are you in America? Might be an American model.

Here in the UK we have the Blue Flash but it doesn't say "By Peter Thomson", pic below.

They were available here with men's and ladies shafts, do yours say ladies flex on the shafts?

Okay, clubs were probably brought in from America then.

I've got a few ladies clubs but like yours they're too short for me to play.

  • 2 years later...

The only iron sets I have without signatures/player names are Wilson.  The Crenshaw Grind's and the Lee Trevino's are the only "signature" type I'd say. The Trevino's are special because they're made in Scotland. The Crenshaw's are handicapped by heavy shafts. The rest are Hogan's, Hagen's, and a set of Palmer's. I love the Palmer's-Standard '85, but I've not fully sorted the nine sets as I've only had eight of them for a month or two. Hogan PC's are sweet too.

I still want some Nicklaus and Tom Watson sets. Also have a Wilson Johnny Miller sand wedge that's I've never had in a bunker, just regripped it for that purpose.  Also I don't know who Zing was but I surely like his putters. 🤣
