Cameron Buttonback for BNIB Mizzy 919 tours?

cmrl1986

Recommended Posts

Have an offer from a buddy who owns a shop to trade my buttonback for a brand new set of Mizuno 919 tour 3-pw DG 120's stiff in box and wrappers with MC grips.

My Buttonback won't get used behind a Byron and a Piretti. Good trade?

I would keep the buttonback. It’s value will continue to increase. I traded for one in my only golfwrx transaction. It’s a solid investment to keep around. The 919’s probably have a cost around 700.

I would ask for more if you are going to do the trade.

I follow the sold listings for buttonbacks on eBay and they recently have been selling for a lot more than usual.

It’s because of Brooks Koepka. Anthony Kim also used a buttonback.

It’s a solid investment to keep around imho!

There’s a reason he offered you that trade. And he’s not trying to do you a favor imo.

But then again, what condition is your BB in?

I've got about $800 in the buttonback and that's aboit what it's worth from what I've seen. It's used with original grip and headcover. I understand that it won't really devalue like irons will, but if you're investing in golf equipment to make a profit, good luck. Like I said, if it's not going to get used, I usually don't keep it around.

How much of an investment is it really? If you bought one of the 8000 Buttonbacks that were made in 2008 for $700US, what are they worth now? $2000US unused?

no more than 4k of them were made but no - i don't think $2k is the right number. at least for the non-ct one's. they went up after Brooks' wins but have settled around $900 depending on condition. they certainly still hold their value 10yrs later.

If you're not using it, have no desire to game it and are in the market to sell it, I'd say the Buttonback and 919 trade is a good deal. I mean, you'd probably sell it for a lot less than what the 919 irons are worth brand new.

I'd do it.

Haven't listed it for sale, but have responded to some WTB ads with it. I bought it for nostalgic reasons, not really playing reasons. I had one a few years back that i regretted selling. Now that I have this one sitting around, I don't really know why I bought it again. Don't get me wrong, it's a great putter. I've just gotten more used to the 009/DH89/801 headshape over the newport and really prefer it. I don't care for the higher toe of the Newport head.

Every buttonback listed on BST that's knowledgeable about the going rate is $850 for 8/10 condition, $900-975 for 9/10, $1000-1150 like new. (from my experience).

Not sure what the 919's are worth but if he's trading you to resale the buttonback, you gotta leave him some profit margin.

If you really wanted the irons, I'd do it personally since the putter is your 2nd backup.

What were you planning on doing with the irons? It says in your signature that you play X7's, those DG 120 S300 are going to be wayyy different...

Part of the deal if I do the trade is to get refitted and put different shafts in. I know the dg120's won't work, they're 12-15g lighter.

fitted and new shafts...that's a deal closer. Sold.

Side bar, how did the buttonback compare to your DH89? Obvioulsy you liked the DH89 more but specifically, why?

Shape. The feel on both are fantastic, but I use a site dot and aim with the face of the putter. With the DH89/801/009 headstyle, the putter sits flat, while the newport has a higher toe design. The higher toe makes it harder (to me) to aim with the face. Just my personal preference I guess. Like i said, from a feel stand point, it feels amazing.

I've always wondered about that, whether it was 4000 total including Newports and Newport 2s, or 4000 of each. Nonetheless I'm not sure there are any putters that are genuine investments, holding it's value is a pretty poor return!

How many of the CT versions were made?

I think you answered your own question.

Meaning?

You mentioned that the putter was used and you don't "invest" in golf equipment which is smart. Seemed to me that was the majority view looking at values. I inferred that you were leaning towards the new sticks. Could be wrong. Good luck with your decision.

It's a fair trade. However, I'm willing to bet he got them at PUD which is probably about half and would be getting your BB for $500ish. Either way it's a fair deal for both.

Good to hear. If you don't love the BB, really don't "collect' golf equipment and think you'd use the irons...do the trade.

I've owned several different Buttonbacks (NP and NP2) at various different times (I think 3 or 4 different times). Always thought they were great looking and wanted to love it, but just could never be consistent putting with it. It became a love/hate relationship and inevitably I would sell the putter.

It's funny how that works...you want to love something but sometimes it just isn't meant to be. I've had a lot of putters that I loved the look of, but they just weren't right for me. The buttonback is a perfect example. No Long neck, no bueno.

Best advise I can give is accept what works best for you, even if it isn't the most fashionable or trendy club. I gotta couple $25-35 old ping and titleist clubs that don't leave the bag.

Value wise I wouldn't be trading for a set of irons unless you plan on keeping them for a long time. Irons will depreciate very quick, the BB probably isn't dropping anytime soon with BK around.

But if your after what your going to use more and get the time out of the clubs being used then the irons might be the better choice.

Either way its what YOU actually VALUE and not what everyone else does.

You realized how "pretty" the buttonback was after you wiped all the dust off it?

Something like that! Just sitting there in my bag while at the iron fitting it just looked too good. I remember selling the first one I had and hating myself for letting it go, didn't want that feeling again. Still got the irons for a deal, $980 out the door. Luckily my buddy (shop owner/putter hoe like me) understood. Said he likes cash too! lol

Very nice. No judgement zone here...I have a room with 15 full sets of clubs in their own bags and 20-30 putters...I completely understand.

Keep the inner Ho alive. You can keep your WRX card and stay a while longer.
