Membership options in Scotland

Quebec Club Ho

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I need help making a decision:

I'm looking for an international membership at one of the following courses Machrihanish, Fraserburgh or Murcar. I selected these because it seems like they are more accepting as I am a public golfer without a membership in Canada and the prices are within my budget.

I plan on staying in Scotland for 2 months at a time (4 months total time) within the next couple of years and plan to play everyday. So instead of paying 'a la carte' green fees (which will add up fast and be WAY out of my budget) the membership will pay for itself rather quickly. I don't plan on any sightseeing or other non related golf activities - all golf all the time! I also plan on using an air b&b or rent housing as traditional 'b&b's' or hotel will be more costly.

Further, I plan to keep the membership as I plan to go back every year (at this point 2 weeks per year) as I close in on retirement and start to enjoy the fruits of my 'savings'.

I've studied all three courses and they all seem awesome. Pretty much gathered the pros and cons of each (e.g., Machrihanish being the most isolated but probably the easiest to be accepted as a member) etc...

Any members on this forum? Any insights, tips, comments or insider information that may help me decide on a course?

Thank you so much in advance !

Would you rather be based North East or South West?

Where would it be easiest for you flying in to?

I certainly wouldn't advise anyone against playing at Murcar.

I am a member at Machrahanish and I couldn't recommend it more highly. It's not that hard to get to. Simple 2.5h drive or a quick flight from Glasgow. Simply my favorite area anywhere in the world I went 4 times in 2018. Amazing area too Campbeltown is a great place.

Murcar I play a fair bit as I work during the week in Aberdeen. The front nine is absolutely exceptional however there are a few holes in the back 9 that loop back out into farmland that are not as good as the rest, saying that its always in immaculate condition and the club seem to be making great strides in facilities and catering compared with 5 years. Definitely a club on the up.

Its a lovely peaceful course to play in a summer evening given its so close to the city.

Have you considered Cruden Bay?

If you want to get away from the coast you might look at Newmachar

36 holes 10 mins from Aberdeen airport

relatively sheltered certainly compared to the coast where it can blow even on the nicest day

Can be 16C at the coast and 21C inland
