Don't be shocked if dipping causes that spray paint to sag or run. It's a risk. There are solvents in the poly that when you submerge the head, could eat the paint.

Hey all, good news and bad news. The good news is the Spaldings were dipped in poly for their first coat. There’s a hint of orange peel, but otherwise they are happy.

 

The bad news is the project has run out of time. Tomorrow I’m flying back to Finland for school, and alas, the clubs won’t be coming along. Even if they were, I wouldn’t have a workshop to do anything with them. So, alas, they will remain here in California in their unfinished state until June or later, when I will be able to complete them, at which point I’ll resurrect the thread and post the completed project.

 

It kills me to leave them here but real life (ie grad school) trumps vintage clubs. I played three days in a row to take advantage of California’s weather, knowing I probably won’t get to play again until April.

Finally back and able to work on these again. They now have their identities back, and I'm glad the extra effort to save the engravings mostly payed off.

 

Does anyone know if the grooves on this model (percussion weighted 113) were meant to be painted/infilled?

Woods 1, 3, and 4 are done! Wood 2 had a problem with the poly and it has completely marred the crown... I will need to do a lot of work to re-repair, which again I don't have time for. I will post more pics when I have time to take them, but here is the driver:

 

 

I found some vintage braided nylon cord for whipping. Also using old pictures and some ebay ads, the whipping on these clubs stopped at the top of the neck. It looks very odd but it is correct.

Here are some more pictures from the good camera. As you can see the two-wood will need to have some more work done, but that's how it goes sometimes.

 

Reading back over this thread I realized I hadn't thanked a number of contributors for their tips and support, and so I would like to say that I used every piece of advice given, and without that advice would have been unable to do anything like this. My next project is far more ambitious:

but hopefully I will be able to achieve a similar result.
