Brookhaven or muni membership

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm interested in joining a club in 2019. I'm torn between a ClubCorp membership where my home course will be Brookhaven or possibly getting a annual pass to Grapevine municipal which is unlimited play.

It appears to be pretty similar price wise since ClubCorp is waving initiation fees and offering a discount of their Young executive membership. My concerns are how busy each course will be, if I will be able to walk up and play most weekdays after work, possible extra fees with ClubCorp, etc. I live in Carrollton and work in Coppell so both courses are good location wise.

Any advice on deciding between the two? Any other advice or tips on my search?

I can't speak for Brookhaven, but GV is one of the better municipal courses around. They have 3 nine hole courses, obtaining tee times is not too terribly difficult if done early. I recently joined Club Corp at Oakmont in Corinth, it's nice to have access to 13 courses I can play with only cart fee.

When we lived in Dallas I was at Brookhaven for several NTJPGA tournaments for my daughter and that place was always packed, even during the week. My general view on Dallas area ClubCorp courses is that you need to find a group to play in that knows how to take care of the pro shop and you will have a few early morning times locked in, without the group or the pro shop relationship you are going to struggle with courses that oversell memberships and allow way too much outside play. I know people think ClubOne is great when you travel but I'd rather belong to one club that can call me into other clubs via reciprocity rather then one that is catering to transient members from other clubs all the time.

Ask how many members they have? Ask to see last ___day tee sheet? Are they 8 min or 10 min tee times? Ask to see a food menu because there will be F&B minimum? What is the cart fee? Mats only? ClubCorp does a great sales pitch but sells way too many memberships and then whores the clubhouse out for private events and tournaments. There is nothing "country club" about ClubCorp.
