Help me decide my classic sets

Hi all! As a late 20 something I had no experience of the true joy of golf until this year (despite playing weekly for over a decade)

 

What changed?

 

I brought Mr Hogans five fundamentals and have since fallen in love with classic persimmons and blades from yester-year

 

I have brought a set of Hogan PC irons 2-E (apex 4 shafts) and I have a generic set of macgregor tourney woods that I am unable to find any info on (or markings apart from the aforementioned)

 

I am now planning my second set (one has to go to Spain with my dad for my holiday clubs)

 

I'm currently torn between two sets of wilson dynapower irons and can't decided for myself which are better... please help me!

 

Attached are a picture of my Hogan's (along with my Gary player anvil putter and mismatched hogan 1 iron plus a picture of the two sets I'm torn between

Nice choices you have there. For my proverbial money, I would select the Button Back set. I'm a fan of a fuller muscle back, compared to the three tiers on the custom grind set you have pictured. Those Custom Grinds look similar to the line over Tour Blades of the mid-80s.

 

With either choice, I think you'll have a winner.

I'm glad you pointed that out. I was looking at the set and thinking it was 3-9 didn't even pay attention to the soles.

Indeed welcome to this corner of the internets. Great to read a young(er) fellow finding appreciation in taking older implements afield. For the challenge, the history, the simple enjoyment of the pursuit. Learning how to play as well as possible with clubs that 99% of golfdom view as relics. Would agree with others, take the Buttonbacks. They are a rather iconic set of irons in the classical realm.

I'm going to suggest a slightly different tact. Because of their iconic status, I would be inclined to sell the buttonbacks. The custom grinds appear to be in especially good nick and I'm going to speculate that they will play more similarly to the Hogan PC's based on head design. I would then use the missing 7 iron to my advantage by getting the remaining irons bent to equalize the gaps across the 7 clubs from 3 iron to pitching wedge.

 

A bit of a pain in the arse I realize, but an other approach to consider and perhaps put a couple of bucks in your jeans.

Welcome to the forum and to classic clubs in general. Older equipment can be a very enjoyable and satisfying way to expand upon your love of golf. That and the people are fantastic! This section of GolfWRX is definitely the most civil and friendly.

 

As for the choice between the two different sets of irons I would suggest the most common solution found here in the classics section: get both! Hoarding is a basic tenet of the classic golf hobby and many here are well versed in the "art".

 

All kidding aside I would agree with the others and go for the buttonbacks. They are a true classic and play very well. You just can't go wrong with buttonbacks.

By the way, you didn't buy the PCs from a Japanese auction site, did you? There was a 2-E set of them with Apex 4 shafts up fairly recently for a recent price. I was tempted but didn't bid because I know my Christmas present is going to be a set of Hogan Apexes . Anyway, someone did snap them up and I think they got a bargain.

Folks around here assemble a "collection" with different themes. Example being an all 60's, 70's, or 80's mixed bag. An assemblage from one manufacturer. Or in my case, a hodgepodge of implements across eras based on how inexpensively they were found. The thrifty classic bag. You will find that over time, with an semi-educated eye for quality and type, they begin appearing. Where prior, they went undetected. Because they were deemed to be old and antiquated. Continue browsing through this sub-forum is a great educational tool. Certainly has been for me. (Much to my chagrin.) Fair warning. Implements begin to proliferate like rabbits once you start.

 

Perhaps a good place to start is briefing through the UK Classic Club Thread. To give you an idea on what's worthy of consideration in your locale. Fair amount of difference to what is available in the UK vs. here in the Colonies. Knowledgeable group as well. Sure they would be more than helpful to offer guidance and suggestions. WTS, Hogans are always fashionable. IMHO.

 

As to your playing partners. They either get it, or they don't. Perhaps they need to swat a persimmon a few times to understand. IDK. Different strokes. One of the reasons why I typically reserve my classical play to solo rounds. Do not have to anser questions, face judgments, be concerned with ineptitude. Just myself, the quiet, classic clubs in tow, out on a patch of terra firma trying to wield them as effectively as possible. If not this shot, maybe the next. Having fun trying. Chasing the one or two perfect shots, when you audibly exclaim......"Oh Yeah!! That's how you do it".

If those first Wilsons are what they think I are, they're a mid 80s blade, and possibly a European only product. I remember 2 sets of Staff blades being offered concurrently - that style and a Fluid Feel. The FFs were stronger lofted, and the Dynas were very square-toed and weaker lofted - if that sways you one way or the other. I recall a fellow junior treating his set pretty abysmally, but believe that was more a function of his temperament than any fault in the sticks.

 

If you really like the Hogans, which are quite a long blade and rounded in the toe, then the Dynas will be quite a different look.

Ah, fair enough. I was sorely tempted by those PCs. A real bargain considering they looked to be in great condition (about 10,000 yen including postage, which is pretty good for Hogan irons Japan).

Like Fellaheen said, lots of people around here go for different themes. I like Eighties Mizuno stuff, partly because I loved the Mizuno driver I played back then, partly because as junior I watched Faldo win loads of tournaments with Mizuno, and partly because the clubs they made back then are just as good as the ones they make today.

However, I've also become a Macgregor fan. I never saw much of their stuff back when I was a junior, but I loved the green and white staff bags, and I really like their iron designs.

The Hogan set Santa is bringing me is only my second venture into Hogans; my first were rebadged Medallions, and I didn't care for the offset or shaft. These Apexes ('72, not '73) look much better to my eye.

 

Finally, there's a big RAM fan around these parts. Don't listen to him, otherwise you might end up buying a nice set of Tour Grinds. I speak from experience... :taunt:

My vote is for the PCs. I've never played either of those Wilsons though. Nonetheless, the PCs are one of my favorite all time iron sets. I will never sell mine.

Hey, by the way, I took my Ram camber soles along to the range the other day. As background, I reshafted them with extended PXi 6.0 shafts, except the SW, in which I put an S400.

I need to give the time at the course! The shaft is easy to swing, and the irons themselves are not that different from the Tour Grinds. As for the SW, I love it. The S400 shaft is certainly a good fit for me, but I also like the shape of the Sw head. It sets up right for full shots, half shots, and wee shots around the green.

Perhaps need reminding of an observation that you made some time ago. One that I found quite apropos to this entire classic club business. Found it worthy of saving in my pithy commentary file of notable quotes I run across in these environs:
