The same epoxy can be used for woods (w/ or w/o an adapter) and irons, steel or graphite shafts - none of that matters.

 

Now whether or not the epoxy you're using is a good epoxy or not is a separate question. What is "adapter epoxy"? Give us the specific manufacturer and brand name and formulation for the epoxy and someone can probably let you know if it's a good epoxy for club building or not.

Interesting, hadn't seen that before. Unfortunately, the one important question (about the lap shear strength) was never answered by the golf works folks. The fact that it's "specially formulated for aluminum" is really meaningless and doesn't help answer the question (too general). The part about "will cure to playable strength in 90 minutes" is interesting but a bit concerning since faster cure epoxies (in general) don't typically have the strength of the longer cure epoxies. But even that's just speculation. What we'd really need are the actual specs for that epoxy (which golfworks.com doesn't generally publish or even tell us who makes it for them).

 

I'd e-mail (or call) the golfworks.com CS and see what they have to say.

I had so many failures with a "fast cure" epoxy that I will never let it touch another one of my clubs.

Maybe it was substandard prep or some other factor but regardless, 24 hour cure only from here on out.

I have not been keeping update with the new stuff, same as Stuart G., am not aware of the "adapter" specified epoxy.

A good question to be posted to the supplier as they might have the specification.

I would imagine, if all the surface are prep correctly , it should be okay. Adapter is usually shorter than the average hosel depth, so if it could hold the shaft in the adapter, it should hold the shaft in the hosel.

I'm also in the camp of favor the 24 hr. cure epoxy over the quick cure one.

Interesting, I had never seen the adapter epoxy either. I’m sure it’s fine. It looks like a sneaky way to sell a 15ml cartridge for the same price as a 50ml cartridge.

I know thier extension epoxy, but adapter glue is new.

More serious response.

 

1. I wouldn’t.

2. I seriously doubt you will have enough unless you have multiple tubes, which is a waste of money at that pricepoint.

3. The cure time is very short. Don’t just mix up a whole tube and think you will finish a set. No way. It will start to set up way before you’re done.

From what I gathered, was that the breakdown temp was lower too. Did they comment on that?

 

I wouldn't use it because of the cost. Cheaper and better alternatives available from Golfworks (24hr Max Strength High Impact for example).

I've been using Brampton 5&15 for a while now on my irons and woods with no failures. It isn't expensive, cures rather quickly, and seems to be quite strong. Any time an epoxy thread appears I feel obligated to plug it since it's been good to me

Shafting beads is a frequent point of contention among many builders here so don't expect any kind of consensus on that question.

 

In theory (for those that advocate it) is that they are potentially useful if the fit between the shaft and hosel bore is loose - but not so loose that a shim could be used instead. Those against it's use argue that it weakens the glue joint and can easily be mis-used by adding too much into the mix - which makes it the 'problem' even worse.

 

Personally, I've never used them nor do I ever plan to. But if used properly (the right amount and mixed well) with a good quality epoxy and a proper prep job for both the shaft tip and hosel, I personally wouldn't worry too much about the glue joint failing for most swings.

I've used the 5 &15 numerous times and have not experienced any failures. However, I have experienced several failures with the GolfWorks quick cure epoxy. There are a few threads on GolfWRX about others experiencing failures with the GolfWorks quick cure epoxy. The long cure from GolfWorks has always worked well for me.

 

I use the Mitchell long cure and quick cure epoxies almost exclusively. I'm pretty sure their epoxy is re-branded Brampton epoxy. I've not experienced any failures with either of the Mitchell epoxy.

 

As far as shafting beads are concerned, they aren't a requirement for building clubs. You only need them if the fit between hosel/adapter isn't snug. It seems some people think shafting beads are an integral part of the club building process, but they are not.

 

I've used them in the past without issue in situations where there is a slight looseness between hosel/adapter and the shaft and they worked well. You just have to use them sparingly as too much can compromise the bond. If the fit is loose enough to fit a shim, I prefer to use that instead.

Good choice. 24 hour should be 3200+ psi lap shear, at least. most club builders I know consider anything under that inadequate for their work.

 

Shafting beads are not necessary, even if some enjoy using them.

 

Make sure tip does not have any chrome left on it, most frequent failure I see
