Just sold my G400... What next??

BCULAW

Recommended Posts

So, I've been gaming a G400 Max driver for a few months. Hit it really well, so I sold it (it's an illness).

I'm itching to try something new. I'm a decent player - currently scoring in the high 70s, but have been near scratch in

the past. Driver swing speed between 105-110. I'm a low launch/high spin player but I need forgiveness off the tee, so I tend to stay away from the low spin heads with the exception of the Epic SZ, which was a nice fit for me (and a current consideration).

Which drivers should I be looking at for a blend of low spin and forgiveness?

Cobra F9 is worth a look, TS2 also.... both are supposed to be pretty decent sticks from what I hear. If you are not a TM hater, they do make some decent drivers too. There is the new Callaway also which I have also heard good things about but I personally have not cared much for their drivers lately.

Heck there is a lot out there to consider when you think about it :).

It sounds like shootout time once all the 2019 drivers are released:)

I haven't hit better than the 400 line. The titleist ts is really nice, but I will not switch from g400. F9 also looks good. Also, CORTEX.

Go get your G400Max back until the G410Plus is released.

Why would you sell before having a plan for a replacement?

Because I like tinkering with equipment as much as I like playing golf. Like I said, it's an illness.

Mabye you should have an intervention.

Nah. It's all in good fun. Like I said above, I'm a competent player, but I learned a long time ago that I don't have near enough free time to sharpen my game to the point I could take my scores seriously. There was a time that I was playing 3-5 times a week and considering tournament golf, but that time is LONG passed. I play 18 holes a week if I'm lucky now. I'm first off the tee box every Saturday morning and I play by myself. Ive found that tinkering with my gear gives me a lot of enjoyment during the round. When I find something I like, I keep it until it gets stale, then I start the adventure again.

The G400Max was OUTSTANDING, but I'm looking forward to tinkering a bit. TM M3, Titleist TS2, and Callaway Rogue SZ all look inviting. May even try the Epic SZ again. It will be fun.

I can relate enjoy the Hunt! Got 5 rounds in last year on my ball with another half dozen or so captain choices. I know my hcp surely is not scratch anymore from 2016 when I got 40 rounds in. So many fun toys now to mess around with. But I get to move up a set of tees this year hitting 50 . Looking forward to hitting 8~W in vs 4-7irons into greens again....may drop a hybrid and add the 58* back in the bag .

I tend to hold on to clubs for a long time. I've only had three sets of irons since 1986, and if it wasn't for a brief experiment with graphite, I'd only have had two. I dreamed someone stole my clubs, and I was almost having a panic attack when I woke up. A true WRXer would have probably been excited at the chance to get new clubs.

+1,000,000. G400 Max is hands down the best driver I have ever hit.

We have a bloke at our club who goes through drivers like most people go through undies. He has tried all the major releases of drivers from all of the major brands, Callaway, Titleist, Taylormade etc. at last count about 27 drivers in the last 7 - 8 years. He plays off low single figures and hits them a mile. He has a G400 Max in the bag at the moment and he reckons it is the best driver he has ever used.

Go and buy yours back - there is nothing better for what you want to achieve.

Go back to the G400 and hit it higher on the face. That will bring the launch up and knock the spin down due to the curvature of the face plus the gear effect.

So close to the release of all the new stuff. If you can wait it out and see what unfolds. This year is a little different than others. Each OEM is claiming better performance like they do every year. But, there is some new tech that seems to be highlighted in each line. If it doesn't amount to anything, snag an Epic on the cheap.

That's funny. My experience with the Rogue SZ was the exact opposite. I had it in the bag for the month of August (which is usually my best playing month of the year). When I hit it on the screws, it was a champion.

My issue was finding the screws!

For me, it was the most unforgiving driver I ever hit. I was using the shaft from my Callaway 815 that had a pretty good resume' so the issue was indeed the head.

I swapped the Rogue for my current G400 Max and couldn't be happier. Good hits are just as far as the Rogue good hits, but mediocre or even bad swats are where the Ping really shines.

Bad hits have no business ending up as good as they usually do!

Fun fact: I ordered a Rogue head cover and traded the Rogue before it arrived, so my Ping lives in a Rogue head cover.

YMMV
