Best all around Driving irons? Whats you opinion?

I’m thinking of ordering the gapr lo with the pro white 90 shaft since TM offers it now as a custom option. Any opinions?

I customized a JPX919 hot metal 4 iron and bent it 2 degrees strong (18 degree). For the money $125, it's about as good as anything out there.

As an experiment, I have one of these at 20* that I use as a 3i for dual purposes on long par 3s and DI. How did you find bending it, was it relatively soft like a forged iron or similar to cast?

The ballspeeds off these put them in this conversation. I'd like to put the HM head to head with my U65s and maybe blend them into my long irons with the release of the HM Pro.

I just put in the 790 udi with the KBS proto 95x and its awesome! Mid spin and flight. The KBS proto shaft feels slightly soft to flex relative to a 6.5 Hzrds.

I thought about going with this shaft but was worried that it would spin and launch too high to use in a driving iron. Maybe tipping it an extra 0.5” would help.

How do these sit behind the ball? I've only hit the p790 udi and I loved the minimal offset and smallish. I'm not really a fan of huge heads with tons of offset. I've been using a Nike Vapor Speed 3 iron (19*) with a c taper as a DI, but it's on the verge of being too big and the offset is a turn off for me compared to my blades. It's totally a mental block, but I struggle with it off the turf because of it's large footprint. I have zero issues with my 4 iron which looks like a butter knife by comparison lol

I've really been looking into this shaft too because I want something that will also have some carry to it. What shaft do you play in your irons and how does it stack up?

I've recently played the Srixon zU85, TM P790 UDI, and now waiting on a MP-18 fli-hi. I wasn't a big fan of the P790. Srixon was really forgiving (but I had the wrong shaft in it for me personally). I also recently hit the Ping i500 3 iron in power spec loft and also a Nike Vapor Pro combo 2 iron.

So far, Nike although not a driving iron was a solid club. I have some high hopes for the MP-18 when it gets delivered this week.

Thanks for that info. I’m either going to put a catalyst 100 in my 790 3i or give the gapr lo a shot with the PW 90

I finally got sick of my hooking my hybrid even after multiple shaft changes and bought a 716 T-MB 3-iron for pretty cheap. It's either dead straight or has a little bit of a fade. Unfortunately i barely hit it past my AP2 4-iron. The T-MB has s300 AMT white, standard length and the AP2 has an accra prototype 95, +1/2". Since i got it for cheaper than I expected, I'll probably get it reshafted. Just not sure if I want to match my irons, get a driving iron shaft, or a hybrid shaft.

I was in a golf store with a couple of launch monitors and the guy beside was hitting the GAPR Low 2 iron 247-252.

It was a demo club but he bought it on the spot.

I love my GAPR lo. Had a few wet weeks in CA so I turned it up to its highest loft and will turn it back down when it dries out. I think its pretty forgiving too.

I agree with this too. Really easy to hit. The mid and high gapr are easy too but they launch fairly high.

I did an iron fitting at Club Champion today and we found my best fit faster than expected. My fitter noticed the Ping Rapture DI in my bag and mentioned that it still performs better than nearly every current DI, it’s just not super forgiving. We decided to do a head-to-head with everything they had. Here were my results:

PXG Gen2 (consistent, lowest launch, best feel)

Ping G410 Crossover (clicky, much worse than i500)

Calloway X Forged (farthest, launched too high)

TaylorMade P790

Srixon Z 85 (insanely forgiving)

TaylorMade GAPR Lo (more like a tiny hybrid)

Titleist TMB (must be me, all bad)

I love this topic... Can't wait to try the new round of DIs when the u500 and u501, new p790 and the Mizuno are released.

That said, I've tried just about everything and can't beat my TP UDI, and have hit just about everything at one point or another. I have two bent to spec, one with DG AMT to match the DG in my irons and one with a Fujikura Motore Speeder 9.8 hybrid shaft in it. I get similar results with both but the ease with which the hybrid shaft launches keeps it in my bag. I'd love to have the steel shaft in the bag just from a personal preference, but can't deny that I hit the hybrid shaft better...

The old Taylormade UDI is probably one of the best all-around driving iron//iron replacements ever made. There's a reason you still see them being used on Tour. There have been many good ones since then that work best for different types of swings, but you'd be hard-pressed to find anything that really beats that older UDI.

I personally have had great success with the older T-MB's and now U500, but I use them mainly because they brand-match my current irons, lol.

Big fan of Titleist U-500 (much less crazy about U-510). But it's a small package with low spin and little offset, so if you're looking for something more versatile/forgiving, I would lean more toward something like a Mizuno MP-20 HMB.TaylorMade UDI is good, too, but very similar to the U-500.

If you can find one for a non-silly price, it's the Nike Vapor Fly Pro 2 or 3 iron, fitted with your choice of shaft.

There's a reason why one hung around in Koepka's bag for 3 - 4 years after Nike pulled out.
