my 2 cents on p790 vs i500 vs p760

if your like me and your scouring the the forums and youtube for the difference between these clubs here is my take from my own experience.

I am a mid handi player (ghin is 8.8) and my swing speed on drivers is around 95-100. i dont crush the ball, and compared to my friends and im usually 1-2 club difference in terms of distance. like any other wrxer ive owned and sold way more gear than i should and im pretty sure this sickness isnt going to go away.

that being said here we go:

p790

Pros: feel is super nice. it has a really soft feel to them but a slight clicky feel on the longer irons. they have a really nice strong impact sound that makes you feel like a rock star. they are very forgiving but they are not miracle workers bad swings will equal bad shots. Looking down on them they have a pretty thick topline but they did good job not making it look to chunky.

cons: my biggest gripe with the p790 were the jumpy distances. these clubs are no doubt hot. youll probably gain 5-10 yards on them. But I felt that they were too hot sometimes. At times the irons would go like 10-20 yards longer than normal. not a good feeling when you miss a green and go ob.

i500

Pros: Looks. i mean wow they were pretty clubs. thinner topline than the p790 and they did an excellent job hiding the chunkiness. Feel is good, but this can be a bit tricky. Its not a soft good but rather a harder good. On good hits they feel great but its a clicky/ solid good feeling not a soft forged feeling. sound is a little higher pitched and not as pleasing to hear as the p790. Forgiveness i would say is the same. distances i would say the same but more stable.

cons: the hydro finish rubs off fairly quickly (ping says its normal). bad hits feel harsh. but the biggest thing is that the length of the blade is really long.

p760

having sold the p790 and i500 i moved on to the p760. and just like Goldilocks and the three bears these fit just right.

Pros: these look really good in person (and i mean i was one of those that thought these were hideous when they released the pictures. in person they are much better looking). the blade length is nice and short. topline is ok. not really thin and not really thick. feel is perfect. it has a really nice soft feel with an amazing powerful impact sound. distances are good, and they are pretty darn forgiving. they are not p790/i500 long but pretty close to it.

this is my own personal opinion. i hope this helps someone out there. please feel free to reply with your own experience.

... After playing some very hard and fast greens in Phoenix last winter where my P790's had a hard time stopping with any wind aid at all, I picked up some P760's and absolutely loved them. The feel is much better than the P790's especially in the short irons and of course the additional spin really helped hold greens. There were only a few courses where the hard fast greens created a problem for my P790's but I continued to play the P760's for the rest of winter. Back in the Midwest where conditions are soft and while some courses in Phoenix never even showed a ball mark let alone having to fix one, the craters on the greens back in Chicago allowed me to try my P790's again and I remembered how much I loved them. Been playing the ever since.

... Fwiw with over 200 rounds using my P790's I have never had one of the fliers from a clean lie some here claim to have experienced. Not once. I loved mine so much I bought the 2019 P790's a few weeks ago and look forward to taking them to Phoenix this winter.

Chisag,

Like to hear your comparison of original vs new P790’s. Had mine since the came out and looking to upgrade to the new ones. Going from Nippon 105 to 120’s after a recent fitting at PXG. Staying with 790’s though.

sorry to thread jack.

... If only I could but unfortunately I am dealing with a herniated disc so walking and sleeping is first on my agenda. Once I get thru a couple months of PT I hope to get out to Phoenix and start my winter golf. I will post my thoughts here when I do. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Sorry man. Recover quickly!! Don’t worry, it’s rainy and cold here in Phoenix right now. Hoping my round at Southern Dunes this Thursday doesn’t get washed out.

I just recently sold my p760’s with dg AMT tour white shafts & am kinda regretting it. I replaced them with a cally apex 19 combo set that I have hit twice in simulator rounds. Different shafts so not easily comparable, hoping it’s just an adjustment period & once I get them on grass they will b better. So far if I had to choose I would go back to the p760’s

I played yesterday in a steady 22 mph wind with gusts to 37. Had 156 yards in on our 16th into a gusty headwind out of medium/light Bermuda rough. I correctly assessed the lie to be a flier and pounded a 7 iron thru the wind to 15 ft and made birdie for a nice skin $. Fliers are a part of the game regardless of iron choice, and sometimes they can be your friend ?! (I play i200s BTW)

I haven't hit the 760's so can't compare. I would expect the 8-A to be similar as IIRC same grade steel. 7+ being speedfoam, different steel and construction.

Great concept to blend in the attributes as the 750/770 was 1 too many sets. I'm happy with my 770s and don't mind the extra chunk of the two OG 790's I carry at the top.

The only really long 790 I have struck has been when I first was gaming the 5i and it was not bent 2 weak as I had asked it to be. I have heard of some QC issues with the gen 1 and their speedfoam but have not witnessed it myself. YMMV. :D

Not exactly - I did the 919s both tour and regular vs the 760s.

I ended up with the 760s as you have probably read in this thread. Numbers were similar. Knew immediately the 919s were too big for me - the Tours were beautiful so it really came down to those vs. the 760s.

I didn't think the 919 Tours were as soft as I had read everyone here saying they were. In fact, I preferred the feel of the 760s to the 919 Tours. So I ended up with the 760s. Numbers wise, they were basically identical. Both were tested with Nippon 120 X Stiff. YMMV.

The 919 Forged will have a little longer blade length than the 790. The difference is less than 2 millimeters but it seems like more because the 919F has a shape that looks longer.

Both will be great for distance — one hollow and injected (790) and the 919F hollow via a cavity milled behind the face through the sole and then capped. The 919 tested as more consistent for me. I found they had similar feel. I prefer the profiles of the 760 and 770 more. Both of those have a look from address that I like.
