Where to buy hickory clubs besides Ebay

Sorry if this is a dumb question or if it's been covered before.

 

For some background, I've been deep into vintage clubs for about a year now. I've got 5 or so complete bags of 60s-80s era blades and persimmons, but I'm wanting to dip my toe into the hickory side of the game and build a 6 club set.

 

I built my vintage bags by shopping around at various goodwills in my area. While it sometimes takes a few different visits I can typically find something cool with regularity.

 

In all my time visiting goodwills I've seen maybe 2 hickory clubs ever. Are there other types of shops that I'd have better luck hunting at, like antique shops? Or flea markets?

 

I've looked at ebay, but I'm wary of buying hickories on there due to the possibility of cracked shafts and loose heads I can't properly see in the photos. I've got a mashie on it's way from Ebay as a test, but I'd rather not gamble on the rest of the bag the same way.

Goodwill. I've scored a set of Mac FC4000s, 2-11 + Penna Wedge, various 8802 style putters, and probably 2 dozen 60s era persimmons.

 

But the hickory stuff is just non existant at the goodwills I frequent.

Hickory stuff is hard to find at Goodwills and even antique stores. I think it is due to the fact that a lot of people use them for decor in man caves and like sports bars. Antique stores price them high for these reasons. Every now and then I will find one on the yard but most of those have warped shafts or are not Hickory but pyratone. I will grab them though and do research on them. If I ever do find a matched set ( which I doubt) on the yard I may ship them off to Mr Moore to be reshafted and gripped properly. I remember a few years back someone told me there was a set of " wood shafted old golf clubs" In a store called Pickers up the road from me. The owner thought they were but when I saw them I knew they were not. They were Pyratone. The owner wanted to argue with me until I produced a magnet and showed him. He got ticked off at me. I do not know if he was an outright thief or honestly did not know. But when hickory hunting if you do not know exactly what you are looking at carry a magnet. Another thing Mr Moore educated me on here was the Callaway Hickory sticks. They are not really hickory and are not legal for SOHG events due to the fact the shafts have a steel core. I got 99% of my limited hickory education right here

You can check out Society of Hickory Golfers (hickory golfers.com) as well as the Golf Heritage Society (golfcollectors.com). Not sure where you live but there are events throughout the United States as well as overseas. I have 3 sets of hickories and I picked up these clubs between club swaps and working with reputable dealers on Ebay like @stixnstuff.

All good suggestions so far. Depends on what you're after, I assume you're wanting to play (or occasionally play) these hickories? Playable hickory takes some research and some time. You want club heads that are heavy enough to stand up to the rigors of modern play, and you will need to ensure the clubs have been properly prepped (epoxy, pin, new grips, etc). Lots of good information here regarding those points, and you'll find a ton of information on the Society of Hickory Golfers website (www.hickorygolfers.com). I build playable hickory sets to encourage folks to get involved, and would happy to help you out. If you live in the Pacific NW, there is a classic golf show every year at Riverside CC. Lots of nice hickory gear for sale from a bunch of seller. I put together my hodgepodge hickory bag from 4 sellers at the show.

I think that he had some success in a better ball tournament last summer in Vermont.

Just because an old hickory club isn't perfect - you can always take the time to learn how to make a club playable, and it isn't really all that hard.

 

And, what you take away from the experience is almost as good as playing those old wooden clubs themselves!

Thanks if that was for me. I live down on the coast 8 miles South of Myrtle Beach. Old School Rocker ( Randy) lives about 75 miles south of me. I met one other guy from down Randy's way that plays a combination of hickory and steel persimmon. When I do the full plunge I will get Randy to help me because he is pretty knowledgeable on the Hickory end. But somehow I gotta clean house I have so much stuff before I branch out

I have been very busy with refurbish projects for coustomers, and have kind of dropped out of the loop for a while . Curious about sand blasting the face of hickory shafted clubs. I assume this type of treatment could have been applied during the time of original manufacturing, and simply worn off over nearly a century of use. However, I've never come across an original example of this kind of face treatment. Just wondering why you're adding adding that and if there's any historical significance?

I do know that sand blasting was invented around 1880 so it was around. Not sure if manufactures did it to their iron heads. I do it, to the consternation of some, as it removes any imperfections from the hitting areas. It also provides some spin as more often than not the groves are worn down.

The closest thing to sand blasting is what you see that was done more vertically with coarse Emory paper. We all have see the “deep groove” variations made by many companies. The many different face treatments of lines, dots and combination thereof but Gibson had a patented face treatment that was pretty effective called Ruffex
