Show Me Your "1" Iron

'76 Wilson Staff (L 335), Ping 89/90 + no +, Mizuno MP29, Hogan White Cameo, 25th Jack SS1 x 2.

The MP29, Staff and Hogan have been lightly used while the Ping is always tempting me for an outing.

At an estate sale with tons of Wilson Staff/Dynapower sets I passed on an excellent set of original SS1s.

I've never been a big fan of any iron set prior to the '76 Staffs. Although Johnny Miller was the best iron player of his generation with irons from the previous generation.

Very nice selection of 1-irons. Do you have the complete set of the Macgregor Nicklaus SS1 irons in the picture? I have seen those sets on E-bay in the past with a very high price tag ($2000 to $3000 a set with the display case).

Yes, set 1800 of 2500 but no display case. I also have an additional putter and 1 iron. There was a super limited set of 150 and the woods in those sets have perfect u-shape grain and I have the driver & 3 wood from set 116 of 150p.

Very nice. Those persimmons do have a beautiful grain pattern. There was a display case on E-Bay for this set for $65.00 but they did not offer shipping. Local pick-up only. It may still be on E-Bay.

Sorry about that info. I just checked E-Bay and the $65.00 display case is for the VIP TP-93 Centennial Set. If you are interested the the E-Bay auction number is 392177677401.

these remind me of playing with no driver in the bag.

Love the BECU 1-iron. I never knew that the 845 model had a "0" iron. I'll bet that thing is tough to hit off the ground. Trevino once said "not even God can hit a 1-iron".

Always found it interesting that the 845s 1 Iron had a ton of offset, but the Heater (0 Iron) had virtually no offset at all.

I remember catching a Heater off the toe on a cold morning about 25 years ago. My fingers are still buzzing.

a few Hogans

Pic of Hogan 1 iron he hit at Merion

You are obviously the go to guy for a 1-iron. How many 1-irons do you own? I was waiting on the Hogan fans to start showing their stuff and you did not disappoint. Those Macgregor Nicklaus VIP's are georgeous. Yours appear to be from the original '67 and '68 models. The one I posted has the diamonds on the face instead of the crowns and is a satin finish. I think it came from one of the reproduction sets made for the Japanese market.

I can remember seeing one of those classic club collector guides from back at the time that craze was at its peak. The 67 VIP full set was listed as being worth $900. The matching 1 iron was worth $900. And the matching sand wedge was worth, you guessed it, $900.

Seems as though the last time I saw one of those 1 irons sell on Ebay it went for around $150. Not bad, unless the seller had paid $900 for it.

Teevons has a crazy amount of clubs. Many of my classic clubs were purchased from him.

These 1-iron threads keep popping up. I can’t find my post from prior threads so here are new pics of some of mine. 99% Hogan.

Does this one count? Since everybody is going old school...

Very nice Driving Iron. Do you happen to know any info about it? Also, have you ever hit it and if so how did it perform?

I use the 1 iron only off the tee and I agree, it is lofted a bit more that more “modern” 1-irons. I carry that and and 2 iron when I play hickory clubs. The 2 iron plays more like a 3-4 “modern” iron, at least thats the case for me. Since i don’t get as much distance from my driver, the 2 iron is a life saver for long par 4s and par 5s. It’s fun to play them once in a while.

  • 2 weeks later...

Some great clubs on this thread. These have been hanging in my rafters since the hybrids took over. A case study in hubris.

I could put that Titleist to use......jus sayin

I was thinking the same thing. It looks superbly meaty, and I would imagine it performs well in the hands of a skilled operator. I love how it's got a dent in the back so you know it's "forgiving". Lol!

Here is another of my Hickory Butter Knives.

It's an early DW Brand club made by Frank Ayres of London.

The split sole design was Registered in the UK just over 90 years ago and was hijacked by MacGregor and reproduced in their steel shafted Tommy Armour versions from 1935 t0 1965.

Although I don't play much hickory any more, this is a beautifully balanced club and surprisingly easy to caress off links turf such as that found at L' Ancresse and the Royal Guernsey Golf Club.

Hi new to GRX , I picked up a nice set of Macgregor tour master Johnny miller irons ,unfortunately missing the 7 iron, and looking for 7 . Anyway what caught my eye was was Johnny miller was spelled in block letters, not a script facsimile autograph signature , like other production sets , I looked through my Macgregor catalog and there not there or anywhere ? Does anybody have knowledge of these year period ?

This is my club but I didn't take the pictures. I loaned it out to my golf buddy to take a few whacks with it. He is a much better golfer than me and I have no business even attempting to hit this thing.

He told me it had a low, boring flight like a three wood. (He paint filled it while he had it too.)

There is a whole hive of bumble bees living in the grips of these clubs for me. Powerbilt Scotch Blades.
