Jackson, MS Area Courses

I recently accepted a job and will be relocating to this area so I’m wanting to know what courses to play and what to avoid. I know there’s a ton of private courses in the area and I know someone that is a member at reunion country club and I’ll be able to play with him occasionally but he doesn’t play very often right now and us joining a private club won’t be an option for a while.

Does anyone have any good public course recommendations? More than likely I’ll be in the Clinton area as that’s where I’ll be working.

Unfortunately public courses aren't the greatest. Patrick Farms is a fun course. Swing driver a lot. The Refuge is a nice course but really tight. Reservoir course is fun but nothing special. Leflour bluff is a goat track. Seriously not worth $10. Lake Caroline is a really fun course. Castlewood is a fun track. Jackson CC is very nice tract but tight. Feel free to aks about any other courses.

The Clinton area is a good place to live unless you are a golfer. You will have to drive a little to get to a course. Everybody is little different on what type of course conditions fit them. Jackson is very limited on public courses. The good news is that the private courses are a very good value. Most all of the courses are in Rankin and Madison counties. Send me a PM and tell me a little about what you are looking for in courses and I will give you some insight. I live in Madison.

Lake Caroline and Patrick Farms are wide open, and their only real defense is if there is any wind. Castlewoods is also a good track. I wouldn’t recommend any other courses, aside from the private Jackson courses. If you’re ever Hattiesburg way (1.5 hours South), Timberton Golf Club is public and a good track. Hattiesburg Country Club or Canebrake are private, but also very good tracks, if you have contacts that can get you on.

Does anyone know anything about Live Oaks Golf Club? It’s the closest course to my work in Clinton and the prices aren’t that bad. Wondering if it’s worth checking out.

As long as it’s well maintained and has a decent range and putting green I’ll be happy. $50ish or under greens fees, currently not feasible to join a private club. Just looking for somewhere either near Clinton where I work or Madison where I’ll be living

If you are looking for the higher end clubs, CCJ, Reunion and Annandale are the top three. CCJ is more of the old school country club with all of the amenities and a large membership. The course itself is always in great shape. Reunion is around 15 years old and they have just completed the clubhouse. Annandale is a Nicklaus course and is golf only. There seem to be a few uncertainties right now at Annandale about some needed improvements. Personally Reunion would be my choice. It is a great layout and never crowded. A lot might depend on where you are planning to live. Fill free to hit me up with a PM if you have any questions.

My in laws live in reunion, it’s a great course and the new club house is super nice. They’ve also got a pretty good pool and tennis courts.

It’s been a while since I was looking but I think Jackson country club was cheaper joining and similar monthly dues. Not sure about Annandale pricing.

I’m interested in joining one of the nicer private clubs. I checked with Reunion, and it was $20k to join and $400 a month for a jr member, $600 over 40. Is that about the cost of other clubs. I didn’t realize they were that expensive around here.

I'm no expert, but I have family/friends in the area that are members at some of them. From what they've told me all of the "big 3" are about the same when it comes to pricing.

Annandale = Golf only (no pool or tennis). Great course/layout. Used to host the PGA Tour event. Unless things have dramatically changed though the average age of membership is up there. I wouldn't expect to see a bunch of people under 50 years old out there playing.

Reunion = The newest of the clubs. Family friendly (golf, tennis, pool, etc.). Always in good shape. Definitely leans towards a younger membership but tends to get pretty crowded especially now that they built a new clubhouse.

Country Club of Jackson = 27 holes. Family friendly (golf, tennis, pool, etc.). Hosts a PGA tournament every October. Classic course and layout with a good range of older and younger members.

Sadly, the Jackson area has a really big discrepancy when it comes to golf. The nice clubs are expensive considering the area, the affordable clubs are mediocre at best, and public golf just doesn't really exist.

I agree on the discrepancy. It's either $600 a month for dues or $250, not a lot really in between. It's a big difference, but it's the only option for a well maintained course. I think I'm leaning Reunion because of my age and where I live. I Appreciate the insight though.

Im a member at reunion. You can get a deal on the membership joining fee if you go talk to them.

Let me know if you need some advice or someone to play with.

Heading back to Jackson in a few months (I went to Millsaps so an impromptu reunion). Looks like they have re-designed The Refuge and made it a little more open so will want to check that out. Other than that, Lake Caroline still in pretty good shape?
