How much length does shaft adapter add to raw length?

Hi all,

I've found similar discussions on the board, but not exactly the info I need. So bear with me, and I welcome any info you all may have.

I'm working on a project - I have a 16 M2 deep face 3W (glue in hosel) and in my quest searching the bay for shafts, I am coming across mostly shafts with adapters installed (TM, Callaway, Titleist mostly).

Needless to say, I need a raw shaft to install, not one with an adapter. So my question is, when I see the measured length of shafts with these adapters installed, how much should I subtract to get the raw length of the shaft?

Everything I've seen so far has been mostly the opposite of my question, ie, what will playing length of some raw shaft be once adapter and head (mostly driver) are installed. So with this info, I can't really reverse engineer.

Is the adapter length added on consistent across all brands, or is it different for each manufacturer? My guess is the adapters add between 0.5 - 1" to the raw length, but it's important for me to know because I don't want to buy one that will be too short once I remove the adapter and install into the M2 head.

While we're at it, bonus points for anyone who knows BBTG measurement for the M2 3W deep face head. At the moment, I don't have a raw shaft that I can dry fit and measure the overall length and subtract the shaft length.

Thanks, gents!

I’ve never written them down anywhere. I’ll go measure a few.

Titleist driver adapter adds 1/2 inch exactly to the overall measurement.

Titleist fairway adds 1/2 as well.

Taylor driver adds 1/2 inch. Don’t have a fairway to check now.

Cally driver and fairway adds 5/8 inch because they are the same adapter.

I may have a cobra to add later.

Looking like 1/2 inch to 5/8 is a theme here.

Fairways are the same as driver. And if you want to be anal - it's more like 7/16" for TM.

Ping's are also roughly 1/2" if memory serves (+/- 1/8") I'd have to go measure to get a more exact number.

All those numbers are assuming no tip weights were used in the build - those can add another 1/8-1/4" depending on the type.

The bigger concern when buying shafts with adapters already installed is that any shaft that has a TM adapter installed AND the adapter was installed at the TM factory, likely means the shaft was tipped 1". Similarly the Titleist factory will tip 1/2" for certain shafts and it's hard to keep track of which ones get it and which don't since it changes from year to year. In both cases, the seller may or may not be aware of that so don't always rely on them to tell you if the shaft has been tipped.

Thanks, Stu. Appreciate the confirmation on the TM fairways.

Totally understand about the factory tipping but for now I’m thinking of VA or Accra so I would think my chances of having a knowledgeable seller on tipping are a bit improved since they aren’t stock options. Definitely good info for other readers though interested in this and something to keep in mind for any future builds!

I could be wrong but I think Ping hybrids play 1/2" longer than shaft with adapter, and 1" longer for driver and fairway.

The OP (and my response) was just talking about how much the adapter adds to the shaft length.   How the playing length changes between different heads is a completely different question.

Gotcha. But is it correct that for ping g400 driver,  when installed the overall length will be an 1" longer than the shaft with it's adapter on?

It would be roughly true for the Ping 'G' - haven't measured the g400.    But I did hear that Ping started going from the 1.5" BBGM to a 1.75" BBGM in some later models - that would add another 1/4" to that.  But I  don't know when that started (g400 vs g410) or if it was just specific variants in each model.

So, if I have a raw shaft, would I cut the shaft to the length I want. Say 45.25. Then add the adapter or add the adapter then measure 45.25 or 45.5. I’m using a cobra adapter.?

Neither.   shaft length (with or without the adapter) is not the same thing as playing length.

The right way to do it is to:

1) put the adapter in the head,

2) dry fit the shaft onto the adapter/head combo

3) measure out the desired playing length on a club ruler to find where to cut it.

Never cut the shaft just based on the length of the shaft alone.

If you don't have a club ruler it's easy to fabricate one - just do a search in the forum for "DIY Club ruler".

I would add that you need to figure out what tipping you want on the shaft before you measure out the desired playing length.  If it's a driver that could be no tipping or 1/2" if you want it to play stiffer.  3 woods are typically 1/2" and 5 woods and above tip 1".

After you know the tipping, you can do the tip cut, then the dry fitting and you butt cut the shaft to the final desired playing length.
