Graphite iron shaft question?

I am looking on line at some graphite iron shafts that i am hoping will help with a tennis elbow issue. I have done quite a bit of clubwork over the years, but not many graphite iron reshafts.

I found the shafts i would like to try and could purchase the 4-pw for what comes out to a pretty good deal or?????

I could buy them in the exact weight and lengths for $15 per club and take advantage of combined shipping! I could either pay $275 or approx $120.

The only issue is that the seller doesnt have #5 iron shafts in the weight or flex i want. I can however buy two 4 iron shafts or even two 6 iron shafts. Would it be possible to tip and butt trim to make one of my choices play like a 5 iron shaft?

I have gone to the manufacturers website and under tipping instructions learned that this particular shaft is straight in and dutt trim to desired length.

I realize this is a fairly tough post to follow, but hoping to get some info. I would really like to save a few dollars on this build and have always wanted this particular shaft, but they have been around the $80-100 range for a few years and a shot at getting them for $15 feels too good to pass up! Thank you. Tim

Ps. Not sure if this is in the correct forum, but it appeared to be the best choice of what i was offered.

You'll probably have better luck in this forum, where this type of question is asked every day: http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/forum/7-wrx-club-techs/

Thank you! I can never find that forum for some reason, but that is exactly what i was looking for! I appreciate it very much.

A four iron or 6 iron shaft is not gonna work since you can't tip trim the shafts. You would either be soft or hard stepping the flex on the 5 iron. So 5 iron will not play the same as the rest of the set.

You could buy the shafts and install them. Then find a new 5 iron shaft to go with it or a used 5 iron with same shaft. Just pull it and install.

What kind of shafts are we talking about? It may be possible to buy a 4 iron shaft and tip it 1/2", then sharpen the point (assuming you are talking about taper tip).

I might have misread OP's topic? I think he said no tipping required, just straight in.. just butt trim required, according to Manufacturing..

Get the 4 iron shaft and trim to length..

The set has a 4 iron shaft but missing the 5....he would need to find a 5 iron shaft.

Tip the 4 iron half an inch, make sure it still has enough parallel tip, put it in the 5.

Ugh. The shafts he wants are .355 taper tip graphite. It is missing a 5 iron shaft.

He is talking about buying an extra 4 iron .355 taper tip shaft and tip trimming it an extra half inch and “making” a 5 iron shaft.

Answer:

Yes. You can do this. I personally would not, but you can. The trick for you if you have not done it before is you must RE TAPER the tip of the shaft that you trim. It is not hard to do, it’s a bit like sharpening a pencil I guess. Doing your first one can be a bit of a trick to take off exactly the right amount of material. You sand off too much and you can’t put it back.

I have made Taper tips on entire sets of .370 tip graphite shafts on a couple of occasions. It’s not hard, you just must be deliberate and keep checking it in your hosel over and over to make sure you don’t over sand the tip. You don’t want a sloppy fit.

I use a 1 inch wide belt sander at slow speed with 120 grit belt.

You can do it by hand by holding a small piece of 120 grit between your thumb and first two fingers. With very consistent gentle pressure on the shaft with the sand paper, smoothly spin the shaft with your other hand and “sharpen your pencil” just a bit. You only need to put a tiny angle on the last 3/4 inch of the shaft. Keep checking every few rotations of the shaft. When it finally goes to the bottom of the bore you’re done.

Good luck.

I missed the .355 tt part, where was that? It takes very little sanding to get a taper tip shaft, in graphite.
