My M5 Review

Played two rounds with the M5 now and here are my opinions.

I firstly put my trusted Speeder 665 TS into the beast.

It definitely feels hotter off the face than the M3 I have been using recently. I would also add that it is definitely longer than it too. Not having a massive swing speed (98mph tops) I feel it has definitely added some yardage too my drives. Playing today I hit a 6 iron into a long par 4 where I usually have a good 4 iron/ soft utility iron in.

The feel is also totally different. It feels very similar too the Rogue with a softer feel from the face which I prefer.

I don't think it will be the longest driver of the year but for me the feel and control trump's it.

I just finished up at Kepler’s in Walnut Creek, ca.

My m3 against the flash, cobra and pxg was as good or better. The m5 though got me about 7 more yards, feels incredible, and looks great.

Worth the upgrade? That’s a personal decision. For me, I had 6-7 in mind as a tipping point for purchase, and I got it.

Great club!

Was really looking forward to the pxg - and it underwhelmed ME. Pays to get properly fit!

If you were properly fit for a driver and a new driver comes out that's 7+ yards longer...the upgrade would be a no brainer for any WRXer for sure (if it is in fact 7+ yards longer)

At first I wasn't sold on the p760 but the more I use them the more I like them. Lovely feel off them when you hit them spot on

Sorry to thread jack but did you have the 790’s before the 760’s and if so did you notice an appreciable drop in yardage in the 7-per? Also can you comment on the difference in forgiveness if any. Thanks

Did you hit M5 with same shaft as M3 and were the others in stock dressing?

^ I did baseline my M3 Diamana W 60x and threw that same shaft into the M5, yes.

For the others ones, they didn't have the 60X, but they did have the 70S, and the Atomos Black 60X and a few others that were comparable, but not apples to apples.

The M5 was best for me (i'm no brand loyalist). I was expecting PXG and the Cobra to give the M3 a good run, but they were at best comparable to M3 or a little less - which I chaulk up to comparable, but not same, shafts. I'll echo what i've read here elsewhere - the Epic flash is very much meh. I don't think it's as good as the Rouge SZ (for me).

That M5 is slick - it looks really good and the shape is almost like the old 909D2 - the pear shaped one. The carbon composit has a really nice mat black finish, and the feel and sound are different than M3. I won't say better, cause that's a matter of opinion. The sound and feel reminded me alot of my old Ping i20. A really good, hollow crunch. The other ones felt more ... dense / muted? ... sort of like the old FT Tour.

Last year, i actually got a little better numbers out of the Rouge SZ than I did the M3, but I couldn't get passed the look and sound. I think this year's callaway was OK and cobra is pretty good, but they both look a little funky to me. The PXG looks great, but couldn't beat out the M3 on performance (for me). The M5 i thought looked and felt incredible, but I was skeptical that it'd be better than M3. Then I saw that I got the 7 or so yards - due to a small jump in ball speed and a small reduction in spin. It's incremental, but just enough (for me) to update.

It's true what they say - there are a lot of good drivers this year.

I'll add....I was had high hopes for the M5 fairway, but it just didn't get my motor going. I mentioned in the other thread - the F9 tour fairway is legit! But same deal - lots of really cool things to give a go this year.

I'm playing to a 5 right now, had been as low as a 2 before kids, and have a driver SS around 107 give or take, if that matters.

It launches slightly higher.

I have the weights in the same position. Only difference is I have the loft standard at 9 rather than M3 standard at 9.5.

Id say it's about 10 yards on an absolute rip.

That’s a great, important point. My review was the m3 9.5 vs the m5 9.0, both dialed down a click.

Very detailed post my man.....53 now and was scratch before my 16 yr old son....and medical issues....speed down 108 to 92 maybe! Playing to a 6 now and driving in play isn't the issue but gaining yardage, good yards is....I'll hit it with stock and current diamana s+ ltd....

Curious did you hit the m6 also? How did it compare.

^ I didn’t hit the m6. I went in looking for the pxg, cobra and epic flash. I gave the m5 a peek on a lark, not expecting the needle to move materially from m3.

I was one of the few that didn’t get on with the original m2. I tried. I actually thought the OG m1 was better than the second gen m1. But I never played either. I liked the m3. I really like the m5.

So for me, it’s m5 then OG m1 then m3.

I guess I’m an odd number guy.

  • 1 year later...

just started gaming the m5 and it's the best driver i've bagged. Have the 9* with the weights in the draw position and it's a fairway finder. deep too.
