Jpx 919 forged vs p790

Tested both. I wanted the JPX so bad going into my fitting. Just didn’t hit them well at all. The P790 were rockets. The ball exploded off the face. The 7 iron was going 190’s but too low for me. Ended up with AP2’s.

Jpx

-fairly soft

-miss hits were punished.

-distance seemed pretty true. Not super long irons.

P790

-not as soft. Ball springs off face for me.

-miss hits still went pretty far

-absolute missiles

I play both back and forth and love both!

P790 w Modus 130S 4-PW

JPX919F w Super Peening Orange S 4-9/ 919T PW

-feel: Mizuno is softer and provides more feedback on center and misses. P790 are numb but very springy and feel similar no matter where you hit it.

-more forgiving: P790 are provide more return on any miss except it’s a tie for tie strikes. Sweet spot they are very similar in total yardage with a P790’d a touch lower spin and similar peak heights across the board

-length: I think the same or at least very similar, which is why I go back and forth so easily

-etc: it’s really what you want to look at and feel as they when fitted properly, are neck md neck. I do like the tech in both and distance edge by a small margin goes to the P790 but it’s negligable for me. If I had to pick one of the two, I would go JPX919F only for the feedback they provide both in feel and sound. You really can’t go wrong either way as both our tops of the tops.

Haven't hit the JPX but be careful with the P790. The ball does rocket off the face but they are quite low spinning. You might get lots of distance but far too much roll and you won't be able to hold greens. I compared the P790 to my current PSI irons and T100 and the spin was 300-500 rpm less with the P790. If you are a high spin player then this might not be a problem

hmmm, I was about to say they'd be better for you but normally sweepers have lower bounce clubs (I'm thinking wedges here), which are better for dry conditions, so going off wedge knowledge, no, rainy conditions would be better suited with higher bounce irons so these wouldn't be the best for your conditions.

That being said, your swing plays a much bigger role then the weather conditions.

I only play 6-GAP. If I go 919, my pre fitting thought is to go 6/7 in Hot metal and 8-gap in forged.

Not eliminating p790. Would like the better fit on a nice dry summer day.

my wedges have a mixture of bounces so I can adjust to variety of conditions.

also read the 2019 p790 has a slighted rounded from edge relative to previous model.

The thinking that the P790 is superior as a ‘sweeper’s’ club gives me the impression that the tester hasn’t played them in actual conditions. Their Achilles heal is the placement of the internal tungsten bar, which makes them look great but raises the CG over the normal external position.

P790’s are best played by those who both need the distance change and whose skill level is adequate to maintain an adequate level of control. If you already hit your 7 iron 170 yards or more, they’ll just create absurd gaps, and if you’re a +15 or worse semi-hack, your ball will just go further OB. The term ‘Player’s distance irons’ is absolutely appropriate here.

Are we really comparing a one piece forged Mizuno head to a partially forged club with a welded on face???

The 790 is truly a low spin distance iron that has stronger lofts than the 919 Forged. The 919s is more of a traditional lofted set. In fact they decreased the loft on the 919s from the previous 900s. So I would really categorize them as a forged players CB that offers a little more distance help but not really a distance iron. I absolutely love my 900s and I am seriously considering going to the 919s in a mixed forged/tour set up. The Mizuno JPX series are fantastic irons but just don’t get the love the MP series does.

I personally did not think the JPX 919 forged felt particularly great. I did not feel any of the 'butteryness' I had expected. My current AP2s and the new Srixon models feel much better in my opinion.

They actually have less offset than 919 forged. I would actually put them between the tour and the forged.

I was down the 790 / JPX forged but I hit a few shots with the HMP and I was impressed. I need to go back but I was thinking forged in 6-G and HMP in 4-5.

curious if in your testing you thought about a split set or HMP were that much better.

i went in thinking P790, 919 forged or 919 blended set but numbers overwhelmingly supported HMP which surprised me. I though with the offset being similar in forged to std hot metal that hmp would be out of question.

for whatever reason the smash factor and ball speed were higher in HMP. I asked at end if blended set made sense but fitter verbalized and body language said HMP all the way.

somewhat related they are bending gap to 49 degrees to give Better gap from PW to my 52 degree vokey.

I would say the compromise is the MP20 HMB. Definitely better feeling than the half forged clubs and still relatively strong lofted to give some distance. Much sleeker looking than full game improvement. I am going with a full set, coming from P790’s which I liked but didn’t love. All the comments about spin are true for me, sometimes good stopping power sometimes not. Not a finesse club for me, but definitely long and pretty easy to hit.

i have only hit the JPX919F one or two times and wasn’t impressed. The looks really turn me off. Loved the HMB looks and hit it at a fitting on a whim and it felt great. All videos and reviews say HMB is as forgiving as JPX forged, and some people compare them to P790’s... I think they are better looking than P790.

Just got fitted into p790 with kbs c taper 130 x stiff, low spinning head because of weak lofts and low spin low launch shaft. in the 7 iron, hit both 790 and jpx 921 forged. jpx was too weak lofted for my spin. most complain about p790 being too low spin. not true. I had between 6500-6700 rpm spin. depends on your swing. even with low spin low launch shaft, i averaged 190 carry, 120 feet peak height on trackman, and had consistent 52-55* decent angle. consistently striking -3.5 to -4 AOA, club path between 2-3* in to out, face to path near and around 0 to -1. swing speed 96-99, dynamic loft 23*, for reference p790 7 iron is 30.5*. i suspect that if your swing is closer to 90mph, the weaker lofted jpx would probably be more suited to you. i really wanted to love the new p770, but the lofts were too weak for my spin. there was the option to strengthen the lofts but the fitter was afraid of an uncomfortable turf interaction. so p790 it is. if you have decent golf skill, nobodys swing is really better or worse, its just different.
