Tough to say which is right because I feel like the word 'golf' could be a verb or a noun. So both are probably right to use...Just a matter of what you prefer to say.

 

Usually when I tell my wife I'm going to play 18, I say "I'm going golfing with X,Y,Z friend today at B time. Should be home by C time".

I have found, although probably just a coincidence, that those who use the term “going golfing” also have a proclivity to shellfish allergies, find Dennis Miller to be funny, are driven to tell you about their brother's golf game on the first tee.

 

Similar for me, I tell the wife I’m going to “hit a bucket of ball” or just simply “I’m going to play today”. She knows what it means.

 

If she brings it up though, she asks “are you going golfing today”?

No difference to me, terms are interchangeable, use them both.

I would suppose all of the high and mighty say they 'play golf', and wouldn't want to be associated with saying they are 'going golfing'. They don't want to insult their egos. All down to earth types rightly know that it really doesn't matter, just getting onto the course is what matters.

I just cringe when hear people say "are you going to golf?" "I golfed"

 

I am no grammar expert, and "going golfing" may be technically correct English....and in the grand scheme I REALLY don't care...but if I could offer a word of advice, If you don't want to sound ignorant then don't go golfing.....just say I am going to play golf.....the choice is yours.

I have noticed that if you are from Great Britain, you have a thick cockney accent, and you like to review every single club that hits the market on Youtube, then you "game" clubs. Besides that ever-growing demographic, I have never, ever heard anyone use that term in real life.
