Ever happen to you? Alone on the range and then -- INTRUSION.

Clubs, jacket, umbrella, radar, balls, and clubs made me laugh I must admit. I’d recommend getting some headphones for practice but I don’t want to give you more to carry!

Glove: ML
Tees: 2 3/4
Towel: white
Repair tool: metal
Ball Marker: largest poker chip in the world
Iron headcovers: wait, what?

The feedback system is annoying

Gotta confess I've been "shushed" three times in the last year hitting golf balls on a practice tee. All three times I just ran into someone I hadn't seen in awhile and admittedly we weren't being quiet.

First guy has full over the ear earphones on and tells me that I'm talking too loud. I ask with some curiosity if it really bothers him through his noise cancelling headphones? He rather emphatically says YES.

Second guy looks like he may be new to golf, and perhaps was somewhere under a rock for some time. Casually warming up for a round he's angry at his shots and seems to be angry at my friend and I for enjoying each others' company. I somewhat politely told him to pound sand.

The third guy probably had the most legitimate complaint. He spoke of all of his swing thoughts and how he couldn't juggle them all while hearing us cackle about what was new in the golf world. I suggested less swing thoughts. He suggested that I had a bad attitude. He went into a diatribe about etiquette and the golf course whereby he was reminded by a bystander that we were on the practice tee. Bystander said he actually appreciated the conversation and wanted a piece of the action. Now there were three to contend with.

Ironically, third guy and I chose to volunteer to help a local non-profit on the same day. He was humble and kind and accused me of "being everywhere." I still didn't have much to say. To him at least.

I typically truly do try and respect others, but I gotta have a place that I can be me. If it's not on the practice tee with my friends I don't know where. Maybe find a place where there's a bigger range or less jerks trying to have fun? I dunno? I'm just so grateful that the only thing that bothers me on while practicing would be physical injury which has yet to occur. Albeit as a lefty, we're generally pretty cautious about backing up to someone with a fast transition.

You know what's worse?

When the guy who moves in directly upwind has a big cigar and you just think to yourself, 'bro..c'mon!?'

I've felt guilty after murders before, but almost never with those types.

You mean there’s something worse than someone hitting next to you at an open driving range? I find that hard to believe.

Could be a number of plausible reasons. Sometimes in the cold at the heated range it can be a plus to have a few folks in one area with all the heaters on.

Or it could be that he walked in and said geez, what are the odds that there is nobody else here at the range and the one guy that is here is in my favorite spot.

I completely get it though. If I had the money I’d have my own private range. Nobody to park next to me and play their music or smoke or jabber on with their buddy for twenty minutes. Or ask about my irons or offer to help me with my upright swing. Or fix my alignment.

I have a tendency in season to be a far corner type when the grass range is open. I will never understand why if I’m the only one out there and there are 75 yards of spots there, that one person will walk all the way out to where I am and set up shop right beside me then sit down in the chair and talk on the phone for 15 minutes. I honestly think that there are a handful of people that frequent every range that look for an opportunity to annoy someone just to see if they can.

His picking that particular stall could be any number of things:

1. Maybe he was aiming for a particular flag on the range and that stall was pointing directly at it.

2. Did you pick the middle stall? Maybe he likes hitting from a middle stall too.

3. Maybe that was his favorite stall.

4. Maybe he was picking a stall where his back was to all of the other potential golfers.

5. Maybe he really didn't care what you were doing and probably thought that you didn't care what he was doing.

6. Some people like to be in groups. Some like to be alone. In your case, perhaps, one was one, and the other was the other.

BTW, since you asked, your picking up your stuff and abruptly moving to another stall was probably not the best decision of the day.

I disagree about the last part. Nobody should feel like they can’t do this and nobody should be offended by somebody that does. Live and let live. But life is too short to let someone annoy the bejeesus out of you on a golf practice range. There are too many other realms in life where you have less choice or control.

Several times a week I will hit balls on the range at a nearby muni golf course. The range has two decks, it's covered and has heaters and good mats. Typical, right? I always go to the lower level where there are some 25 well-defined stalls separted by short dividers. I'm always there early, before day breaks here in the winter around 7:30 a.m. so again today I was the only golfer there for quite a while.

Perhaps half an hour later, another golfer walks in, gets his balls and -- get this -- picks the stall directly behind me. Now, I don't claim to own the range and I can practice in a crowd just as well as the next guy but it struck me as more than odd that with 24 other stalls to choose from, he camps out immediately to my back. Oh yeah... while I'm not putting on a Ben Hogan-like ballstriking clinic, I can more than get it airborne -- unlike the chop behind me who proceeds to clank, shank, fizzle and fozzle balls until I can't stand it any more.

I pick up my clubs, jacket, umbrella, radar, balls and clubs in order to move some four stalls away. I finish my bucket in relative peace. Please... I'm no 'golfing eliteist' who can't stand to be around lesser players; I pick up games with all levels all the time. But doesn't it strike you as just a little strange that the latecomer would set up shop in the stall right behind me when he had the entire range to chose from?

Or is it only me?

You have serious problems in concentrating on what you are doing. I bet you are not working in an open office...

I think it's just common courtesy to give people some space when you can, and IMO anyone doing that either doesn't care about courtesy or simply has no situational awareness. Analogy at my South-facing range is right after sunrise or near sunset, when I'm always careful not to take a spot that'll put my shadow across someone else's ball position if there's room to hit elsewhere. I appreciate people who do the same when they can.

This is exactly the first thing that came to my mind. I don't understand it. I am no elite player. I am by all standards a "hacker" but am working hard on improving. When I go to the range I always go toward the end for a couple of reasons. One I will be less distracted by people coming and going. Two I won't bother other players with my bad shots. If it's available, I use the mat I take my lessons on.

Lol. You going to need to bring more than rude behavior. Maybe 3 birds a side ?
