Is Justin Rose boring to watch?

Jeez, I thought Justin Rose could bomb it pretty decent. Tough crowd.

Consistently carrying it over 300 with his driver, 295-298 on the dot three days in a row to carry it into the second par 5 on the front in two. He's very long. They mentioned that he's probably as efficient as it gets out there. Getting every ounce of distance out of his swing without straining himself to do it. If I were pointing someone to a swing to model it would likely be his.

Agree with many. He’s obviously a very good player, but very vanilla. Again, hard to quantify what makes a player seem that way, but his borderline robotic movements and God awfully boring interviews probably contribute.

Boring golf is the best golf. Maybe not to watch though. I used to think he was boring, but now I just try to be in awe of how good he is when he’s on. It’s his lack of personality that turn people off. If Rory went out there and played the exact same round Rose did the first couple of days people would be jumping for joy.

Comes back to whether you are watching him hit golf shots or watching for other reasons.

If Woods had played the exact same shots as Rose over the last three days there would be a long thread about how incredible he was playing.

Because Rose controls his emotions and goes around the course in a pleasant deadpan manner we have a thread saying he's boring.

I bet most of the pros wish they could be this boring. I seem to recall Woods won one of his Opens (Carnoustie?) hitting irons off every tee, playing boring golf and not interacting with the crowd in any shape or form either.

Agreed.

Its pro golf not reality TV, watching excellence is not boring if you like golf.

FYI, not Carnoustie but Hoylake (Royal Liverpool)

Calculated golf game. Charisma (That i see on TV; and not knowing; or having met him) of a cabbage.

He looks like he enjoys his 'day job' and he most certainly gets pretty much all he can from the majority of his rounds. His record so far speaks for itself and potentially going forward - could make him close in on some of golf's all-time elite.

But; Is he exciting, does he have a natural flair, would i go out of my way to watch him, do all the youngsters out there 'wanna be Justin Rose'. Unlikely.....

Rose and Koepka, you are usually going to hear this on WRX when either is in the lead. They play golf and seem to conduct themselves on the course using a template from decades ago. They play the game like it was played before reality TV took over our living rooms. They play golf like they did long ago before professional athletes acted like Gods when they batted down a pass or scored from the 1/2 yard line. They conduct themselves on the course just like the best in the world use to conduct themselves. All before a magical golfer changed all of that and completely moved the bar as to how the best in the world acted. Rose and Koepka are two of the few that have resisted the move to massive fist pumps when anything is made from outside 5 feet on Saturday or Sunday. They have resisted dropping the F bomb into the open mike after a poor shot during a Saturday or Sunday walk in the last few groups. I don't think either of them wear special colors meant to intimidate on the final round.

Nope, these guys are two examples of professionals who just choose to play the game like we use to think it should be played. Problem is, the bar has been moved and they don't measure up to what a lot of fans want these days. Personally, they are two of my favorites. They are both capable of beating the best in the world without doing anything but playing golf. They are both capable of walking through a strong field and playing better than everyone else with composure when things are most challenging. I LOVE that stuff. To me they one up the fist pumping gamesmanship that had won a lot of fans hearts. Guys like Rose and Koepka thrive off of keeping their breath rate composed and their trigger finger smooth for four rounds while all around them is a fire fight just ready to explode.

If he was an American I doubt this thread would exist.

Same cr*^ is said about Koepka. I think it stinks in either case but IMO you are making this into something it is not.

Many golf fans don't know or appreciate how good Justin Rose is. He is sneaky long (saw 182 mph ball speed on Saturday) and has an overall fantastic game. He is going to bag some more majors in the coming years and what he is doing with new equipment is astounding. When is watching a winner boring?

I would agree I find Rose boring to watch but he’s an incredible golfer. This reminds me of a story I heard once about hogan being boring to watch golf. I find rose falls into this category too.

The Hogan story goes as saying once a tour pro’s wife was following around her husband his round while he was paired with hogan. This was a little later in Hogan’s career so he had some aura around him from the younger guys.

The tour pro told his wife be sure to watch the greatest ball striker ever before the round started. After #18 the pro said to his wife, so what did you think about mr. Hogan? She replied “eh I thought he was pretty boring, every shot was dead straight, I like watching you more because it’s almost like you don’t know where the balls gonna go.” Hogan ended up shooting like 3 or 4 under that day.

That’s how I would describe Justin Rose, not many mistakes, hits the ball relatively straight every time. He’s boring and vanilla to watch but those same qualities are what made him world #1.

Let me see, he doesn't snort coke, he doesn't bang a different ho everyday, ummmm yeah, he's boring.

Seriously, the internet brings them out.

Straightest hitter in the game, doesn't make for much entertainment.

Seems like a decent bloke in interviews though.

No doubt he's a tremendous talent but, as a spectator, I find his game boring to watch. Rory, JDay, DJ, Tiger and others play an exciting game. I don't get that with Rose. Is it just me?

I'm genuinely curious as to what exactly it is that you find exciting about the four golfers that you named, Rory, JDay, DJ, Tiger. What is that they do that JR doesn't?

Plenty of people on this thread support your view but not many can express exactly what it is that makes him 'vanilla' compared to others. They have compared him to other 'boring' golfers and given examples of other, more exciting golfers.

For example one poster apparently gets excited watching Jason Duffner's waggle and KJ Choi's stoicism excites someone, but not Rose's stoicism. But nobody on the thread has defined what aspect of any given golfer or even golf itself make it exciting.

So I'd appreciate some enlightenment. Thank you in advance.

If not flashy equals boring then most of the Tour is boring. He doesn't bomb the ball liker Champ or DJ nor is he known for Houdini shots like Phil and Bubba but he grinds every week and ends up near the top. He typically plays within himself except for 18 in round 3 when he clearly preferred to lay it up and decided to go for the green and paid the price.
