Removing shaft from Byron Morgan

Recommended Posts

Has anyone done it? I got my custom in yesterday and want to add a custom shaft. Heating with a torch is not working. Anyone have insight?

Ive heard of some of those fitting a bit tight. Byron doesnt use a ball bearing (like the old Pings) or anything silly. Might just have a tight fit.

I've had it in a vice and torched to the point where I felt like the neck might snap and I've only managed to get it to come.out by about 1/4 inch..I've never seen this before. Most come out easily with a torch.

You just got a custom putter in and want to add a custom shaft immediately yourself? Why didn’t you have Byron build it with a custom shaft? Not being critical just curious

Glove: ML
Tees: 2 3/4
Towel: white
Repair tool: metal
Ball Marker: largest poker chip in the world
Iron headcovers: wait, what?

The feedback system is annoying

Because I already had the shaft. Could have sent it to him I guess, but I reshaft all the time and have NEVER run into a problem like this. Usually they slip out in 10 seconds and reshaft is not problem.

What kind of neck? Ive never had an issue with plumbers neck from

Byron.

Just a standard plumbers neck DH89. I'm taking it to a friend's shop in the morning. I had the thing damn near glowing red and it still wouldn't budge.

Could try the thermal shock method...some have had success pulling the Ping

shaft with the ball bearing , doing it this way...

Cool the shaft and head with ice / ice water / dry ice ,then hit the hosel with

the torch. The rapid temperature difference between the two will relieve some

of the mechanical tension between the two surfaces.. worth a try...

If you get it too hot it may be swelling and make it tougher.... It shouldn't take a whole lot of heat, though... I have never had an issue removing from 89s or 615s.... The Ping putters, different story. Too much heat can be a bad thing for sure though.

I've had Byrons where the shafts were an absolute b**** to remove. Plumber's necks. But with persistence I got them out (while sweating bullets that I was going to snap the neck off). And I've removed hundreds of putter shafts so I've got quite a bit of experience.

If you have the tools I would use a shaft puller like you would use with a driver with a graphite shaft.

I've also had Byrons where the shaft came out easy peasy.

Had my club guy do it but I have no idea how he did it or how much trouble went into it. I have a funny feeling he would have said something to me about it if there about it that was anything out of the ordinary. I do my own shafts now unless it’s graphite since I don’t have a puller.
