G410 irons...took the leap

I had a nice set of G30's and like a fool I sold them. I thought I was gonna end up with the G400's but didn't. I wish I had kept the G30's and now I hunt for another set. I think the G410's do look sweet though and smaller in size so I might hit them this Spring if I cannot find a nice set of G30's!

Sounds like there may be a bunch of g25 on the BST soon!

The more I think about it, with the lofts being similar I’m considering swapping my 6-U for i210 and keeping the g25 4 & 5 irons in the bag. Even if I changed I don’t think I’d sell the g25s.

I learned long ago that you don’t sell your gamers unless the new gear firmly replaces them. That stated, sometimes it may be better to move to old ones to force the new ones in the bag. That prevents bouncing back and forth.

Saw the new G's today for the first time and they are drastically improved visually with the lower offset and recontoured blade shape (my opinion of course). Blade length is same. This part surprised me since Ping sites a 10% size reduction. I think the size reduction they site relates to the less bulbous shape. Anyway, I like them. Will go back and hit them sometimes soon.

IIRC 10 percent less offset and 3 percent shorter blade length

My bad. I'm mixing up the facts. They promimently mention 10% less offset as well as smaller size, but the size part is not quantified on their website. 3% smaller seems realistic. It's not much, that I know. The shape is quite pleasing to the eye though.

Am I the only one that would kill for a set of “Pro” or reduced offset G irons?! I really like how the new G410s look up to the 5/4 iron, then I just can’t handle that much offset. I know that’s a me problem, and yes I know the “I” version is probably better suited for me, but I’d love to have that option of low offset, but slightly larger club heads.

You could look at AP1's, which have slightly less offset than Ping G irons.

Don't hold your breath. Your best bet is to switch to Crossovers for the long irons.

Funny you mentioned that. I was wondering how my swing would get along with the i210 in graphite. On that note, PING still sells the ie1. They are $113/club in graphite.

Welp, I hit the 410's and 400's side by side and decided to save several hundred and bought some used 400's. The numbers were pretty much the same for me and TBH I liked the feel and sound of the 400's better. I hope I like them.

Lol. Like I joked earlier in this thread, nobody ever reports back. It’s uncanny. Heck, I’ve been out on the course 3 times over the past few days in 30 degree NJ. Not writing Bama off yet, but wherefore art thou?

Well I played mine today and didn’t do well at all. I also hit my driver poorly so I’m not blaming the irons. I practiced a bit after and worked out a few things I hope. The good news is when I do my part I really like the ball flight. Keep in mind I’m 62 with 10 handicap and have been playing Ping G2 irons for 15 years. They do seem easier to hit but the course was very wet and I hit quite a few fat shots. I am used to a G2 sand and lob wedge and it’s going to take some practice to get used to the different feel of the Glide wedges. I use my 60 a lot around the greens.

Looks like lawsonman gave solid info that the feel isn't going to be improved vs. my current G25. I saw the G410's at the local Golf Galaxy but didn't get a chance to hit them ... did like the look of the blade size & offset though. So, I'm back to thinking i210, if feel is as good as the reviews say ... but the 4I & even 5I look a bit scary (thin) ... if I want to replace those with alternatives it opens a huge can of whoop Word not allowed, with Crossover, i500, G700, G410 hybrid ... would really have to work the gapping via a detailed fitting to make that work. Hmmm, maybe Srixon z585, Mizzy 919 Hotmetal ... or just leave well enough along and stay G25 ... much demo fun ahead.

Took the plunge. Ordered G410's, 5-U with SteelFiber cf-90's in regular flex. Moving to graphite to help my old joints. Now the wait begins.

Mind if I ask what the final cost was with the graphite? I might end up with a similar setup and am considering steel fibers.

The SteelFiber fc-90's were $40 per shaft upgrade so $280 in addition to the $875 base price. The other model SteelFibers offered were also $40 each.

I got in a round this past weekend with them. The wedges impart a LOT of spin on pitches and chips I came up short of the pin several times as a result. With that said, the feel on them was great. Through the rest of the set I was happy that when I played for a low shot to stay below tree branches (due to my crooked drives), the ball stayed low. The look at address gives me confidence. I didn’t hit any major foul balls on any shot I played and I hit the greens I should have for the most part. I’m still working on distance outside the simulator. I’m very pleased so far but need some rounds on a dryer course before I can give real specifics. We’re in the middle of the wettest winter in my life and it’s hard to judge how clubs really perform off soggy turf. I hope this helps and I’ll add anything else that I learn as I go forward. So far, I’m glad I got em!

Yeah most places this time of year isn't the best for getting a true test of the clubs. I believe the Dick's Sporting Goods near here may have them so will have to swing in see them in hand and possibly hit on their simulator. With so much snow on the ground couldn't play for a while anyway. Gonna check in on this thread now and then to see whatcha think of the longer irons the 4 and 5 etc... and also the AWT shaft. I'm a Nippon 950gh fan these days and betting its a good shaft.

Bamagolf, if you’re in Alabama, I can vouch for the crappy wet winter. Glad to hear you’re liking the new sticks. Especially the spin on the wedges. Mine are supposed to arrive 2/20.

Amen brother. I'm so fickle with golf clubs - always looking to buy a better game. Or maybe it's like that show on TV "Hoarders"- I just like the chase and purchase. I've had my G30's for a couple of years now and love them. About 6 months ago I bought a set of G700's and used them for a month. Didn't like the clicky sound and sold them. Back to G30's until December and I bought some TM P790's based upon a friends recommendation. Two range sessions and one round and I just sold them. Didn't like the feel. Back to G30's and the G400's I just bought will be delivered Friday. I always buy minty used and am a bargain chaser so I've probably only lost $200 on all the deals.

I'm pretty sure I'll be happy with the G400's as they are very similar to the G30's. Hopefully the promised added distance/accuracy will actually materialize. At any rate I'm probably going to box up my G30's for a while even though I have a buddy who wants them. I still have my Eye2's from 1983 and a set of Mizuno's I used to play in 15 years ago so you may see me on a hoarder show someday.

I am and as you are probably aware, we’re forecast another 6 to 8 inches of rain in the next week. It’s the wettest winter we’ve had on record. I hope you enjoy your new sticks and I hope we both get a break from the rain soon so these courses can dry out.

I love the looks of the G410 but I haven’t read much about the forgiveness vs. the G400, any insights?

Well I got to see them today at Dick's Sporting Goods and I do like them. I was most curious about what the wedges looked like and if the 4 iron looked so steep that it would be unnecessary to include in the set.

I did like the wedges quite a lot and the 4 iron looks very hittable but I think it's all gonna come down to if the AWT is high launcher (I would bet it is) and if those heads are high launching as advertised. One thing that struck me was when I placed the 7 iron alongside the 8 iron it just looked like such big difference in lofts as in like a 5 or 6 deg difference. (was probably just seeing things,,, getting older lol..)

So yeah I got to hit these first off of grass outside to really know if they are worth it for me. Simulators are fun but I don't take em too seriously. Gonna be a long wait probably the way this Winter is going.
