2019 LPGA Season Odds and Ends

As a general rule of thumb, an index is usually around three strokes lower than the average. Are we trying to calculate an male index, or based on the women's rating? A rough estimate would put the Top 10 players at +5 (Men), and the median players at +3 (Men).

They played at Highland Meadows Golf Club two weeks ago at 6550 yds, which is a Black/Blue combo. The men's rating would be 71.9. The tees are not rated for women, but would likely be in the 77.3. Sei Young won with a four round average of 65.5. The median score was 69.75. The 74th place finisher shot 68-75-75-71. Sheesh. A bad day was 3 over, and she still shot two rounds below the (men's) course rating.

I see on the three shots quick calcuation. I also tie out to that. There's another thread in the general golf section talking about this now too, and a lot of people seem to be in the 2-3 range.

My estimate above may have been too complicated but I guess I was just thinking its 2 to 3 vs. 3+ (average LPGA player on men's rating/slope). Your 74th place finisher would have averaged 2.4 shots below the rating in the index calc (just taking half the scores). Assuming this is like 130 something slope you'd be just under +3.0? So it's close.

Either way, I don't think this itself impacts my thought on the average distance for a scratch player. I'd say at 260 yards average off the tee the LPGA player is far superior in other facets of the game than the average person hitting it 260. But I may easily be wrong. I don't have a large sample of scratch players to look at firsthand.

For whatever its worth, here are a few more articles on driving distance and handicap. Two articles have 0-5 and <6 handicaps averaging less than 240 yards off the tee. Given the distance gaps with other handicaps, this would suggest scratch is at 250 yards or below. The third article has has the <5 handicap group with a median distance of 251 yards. I assume there are less people with +handicaps than those with 0-5 handicap, which would imply that the scratch group is north of 251. But I don't know this for fact and its unclear how far above 251 they'd be.

So I don't know what to think. My thought my be biased by the "average of reasonably well struck drives" vs. the true average of everything. The trackman swingspeed chart does seem very high even if you allowed for some slightly lower smash factor. I'd assume people at scratch are at least upper 1.4x. If you assume you need a 141 ball speed, even a 100 mph swingspeed should produce this at relatively speaking a pretty crappy smash factor (for a player of this level).

I'm not sure if the course conditions alter this either way. Some every day golf courses produce very little roll, although some others run forever in the heat of the summer when they get dry and hard.

Lydia's differentials for the last 20 rounds (not including the team event )were -5.3 (65 71.2/132), -1.9 (69 71.2/132), -1.9 (69 71.2/132), -4.9 (68 74.4/148), 1.2 (76 74.4/148), -3.4 (70 74.4/148), -2.6 (71 74.4/148), -2.3 (69 71.7/130), -3.2 (68 71.7/130), -4.1 (67 71.7/130), 0.3 (72 71.7/130), 0.0 (71 71.0/127), 1.8 (73 71.0/127), 1.8 (73 71.0/127), 0.9 (72 71.0/127), 1.2 (74 /72.6/133), 1.2 (74 72.6/133), -1.4 (71 72.6/133), 2.0 (75 72.6/133), 1.4 (73/71.4/131).

Her best 10 differentials were -5.3, -1.9, -1.9, -4.9, -3.4, -2.6, -2.3, -3.2, -4.1, -1.4.

Thus, Lydia is currently a (men's) +3, and averages 250 yds off the tee. She's probably a +8 or +9 if we used the women's rating/slope. Obviously Lydia is not your ordinary 250 yard driving scratch golfer.

'Curious where the Quintessential article is getting its data. It looks suspiciously like the Trackman data, which I believe is woefully out of date. Based on the LPGA stats, the average driving distance in June of 2018 was 253 yds, and not 246 yds. It was 257 yds in late April 2018.

Yuka Saso lost in semifinal of 2019 US Girls' Junior; but it doesn't change the fact she'll be a force to be reckoned with in 2-3 years:

Wow, I must have been sleeping. I just noticed that Charley Hull has a TaylorMade bag and hat. She was playing Titleist clubs for years, and had a Richoh visor.

I noticed a few of the Koreans and Minjee appear to be playing 3x in a row in the Scottish Open.

For players that aren't near any money ranking thresholds or playing in the Solheim Cup, I wonder if anyone will basically shut it down for a month+ here (could go home to Asia)?

It's their job but a lot of travel to Toronto and Portland for two tournaments. Alternatively, if you skip the Scottish you have a nice break until Toronto, and then another nice break between Portland and Indy.

Yeah, it seems like making it public would be better. I'm sure among the players they all know who the snails are. That being said, some of the PGA guys don't seem to give a darn. They are like I'm slow and I don't care if you don't like it.

Does anyone know what the pace of play is like in the NCAAs or the major amateur events? I was reading something else talking about what the caddie does for these players. I'm not saying the caddie does nothing / is basically a talking mule, but it got me thinking how these players managed when they carried their own bags (which wasn't long ago for many of them).

I've watched plenty of high-level amateur and NCAA golf, and I can't say I've noticed any significantly slow play. Sure, there are a few instances, e.g. the recent U.S. Girl's Junior, but otherwise they seem to move along.

Jillian Bourdage slow ambushed fiery Yuka Saso!

But I'd still give Jillian the credit that she outplayed Yuka.

Surprise! Suzann Pettersen wants to play in the Solheim Cup

“Obviously I would love to play,” Pettersen told the Ladies European Tour. “It’s the biggest and best stage in golf. I would love to play, if my game is up to it. It’s hard to really tell and that’s why I would love to play this week just to see – and we are picking the team in a week’s time.

I have no idea. Why would she need to go all the way there vs. CA? Although I'm sure they'd accommodate wherever she happened to be. Do you know what clubs she has been playing? Could just be a tune up of the existing set.

She's signed sponsor contracts with Hana Bank and Descente; both Korean companies.

Similarly, In Gee's contract is with Ping Korea, not Ping USA.

I've no idea what clubs she's been playing.

We'll find out soon if it's a sponsor deal.

Yealimi was playing an Epic driver at Thornberry. Her irons look like Apex Pro 19's. In 2018 she was playing a TaylorMade driver.

You sure that In Gee is sponsored by Ping Korea? My understanding is that it's Ping USA. She's listed on the main Ping website: [https://ping.com/pros/lpga-tour](https://ping.com/pros/lpga-tour "https://ping.com/pros/lpga-tour")

In Gee wasn't on Ping website 2 years ago; but was their main star on Ping Korea.

Glad In Gee is now on Ping website!
