Interesting table on PGA tour average / leading driving distance over the years from another thread. The LPGA figures are currently around where the PGA figures were in the early-90s (current LPGA median is a few yards lower but the leading number is similar). I haven't seen any reliable swing speed figures recently for the LPGA players, but my guess is the average PGA player in the early-90s was swinging around 10 mph or so faster than the average/median LPGA player today (95-100 vs. 105-110).

A couple of thoughts come to mind. First, it shouldn't come as a shock when some of these ladies hit it 300 off the tee from time to time (the above average PGA players could do it back then with the right conditions). Second, there is no doubt that the LPGA players are more athletic, playing great golf, etc but this also gives some idea of what the equipment and optimizing launch conditions has added over the years.

It's an interesting question. For the record books, Hannah has the second best season so far (major + another win). There are others that may have a better collective campaign (multiple wins, consistency). But it is probably true that the vast majority of the others would trade their season for Hannah's.

Will be interesting to see how Minjee does going forward. She's obviously playing at a very high level (judging the whole season) but it does seem like she's kind of flatlined a bit; both her absolute game and relative to some others (for a while, she had been getting a bit better every year). Since all of my other favorites tend to be fading away, I'm hoping she can find a next gear in 2020 but I'm not sure.

Like Minjee, Nelly has also cooled off since her hot start to the season. There are players that seem to get out of the gate quickly, e.g. Minjee, and other that peak near the end of the season, e.g. Shanshan. Of course the key is season long consistency, e.g. Brooke.

I notice that many of the Solheim Cup players have "cooled off" so to speak, in the last few events. Of course, Nelly enjoyed success in Paris immediately afterwards, but otherwise, many of them seem to have come down from the high that was the Solheim Cup.

Danielle and Georgia are having a good week so far and look set to finish well. Brontë has WD this week, but looked steady prior.

I suspect that the emotional intensity that comes with an event like the Solheim is very difficult to sustain for longer periods of time. Even more so for an entire season. As is often said "golf is hard" ... it continually tests you, and not just physically, but mentally too. Being an individual sport makes it very difficult to depend on teammates--after all, no one else can pull the club back for you.

Now having waxed on in the best traditions of a coffee shop philosopher, I don't agree that Hannah Green has had the second best season per se. I like her as a player, but I think her season pales compared to that of Brooke's. If anything, I see Hannah's season as similar to Pernilla's season last year ... a major win, but with an additional victory thrown in.

It's like Hannah caught "lightning in a bottle" twice this season. She has only finished in the top 10 three times (16% of the time). Her scoring average is 71.25 (55th), she's 11th on the 2019 Money List and she's 15th in the CME standings.

Please don't misunderstand me -- I think Hannah is a good player and will continue to grow and develop. Depending on her off season, she should come back in 2020 a better player.

Minjee (2019 - to date)

1 - win

7 - top 10s (33%)

5th -- CME

6th -- Money list

69.75 -- scoring average (7th)

Brooke (2019 - to date)

2 -- wins

10 -- top 10s (43%)

2nd -- CME

5th -- Money list

69.57 -- scoring average (4th)

Regardless, Hannah's season has been good, her best yet as a professional, but I wouldn't classify it as the second best season.

Wait a minute. Time out. What have I missed this year in ladies golf?

Hannah Green has been the second best player this year after Jin Young Ko? Did I miss something?

Hannah is 11th on the money list, 15th in CME points, and T35 in Top 10's (w/ 3). So, no, she hasn't had the 2nd best season. I'd say Brooke, 6ix, and a handful of other players have had better seasons.

I agree, but she won a Major. Take the Major away and replace it with a regular event victory and she doesn't get that second spot. It's all about that Major.

Ouch! That's a painful comparison. Let's hope Hannah can at least come away with 1 top 10 in 2020, if she can't, well then she's in Pernilla's World. I have faith in her.

Oh I think Hannah is a more "developed" player than Pernilla ... and I think she will reach greater heights than Pernilla as well. My only "push back" is on the notion that Hannah is the second best player this season/second best season this year. ?

That award is an Australian award - something some posters seem not aware of. I think Hannah was a worthy winner, but you could argue that Minjee outperformed her over the season. Still, you can't go past two victories, with one a major - so I think I'd pick Hannah. BUT...in Australia, our women's cricket team has just a world record number of consecutive victories, and a number of individuals in that team are rewriting the record books. I'd bet Hanna's win wasn't popular in cricket circles!

At the VOA in Texas Brittany A had a T2, Georgia T4

This week theres 12 cuppers in the top 26

Those are good points. But, that was then and this is now. It's been a month now since the Solheim Cup and a good many of the players do not appear to be playing as well as they did during the event. That spoke to my point about sustaining that high level of performance and the challenges of achieving that.

It's a relative measurement...relative as to how well they played at the event. However, using this particular event (and all of the others on the Asian swing) is not necessarily the best barometer per se as they are limited fields with no cuts. I believe that they are all of that format ... but, I could be wrong as I've not consulted the LPGA website to confirm that.

Now, further to my point about the "fall off" per se, there are players that have hit "rock bottom" in terms of their current performance. I'm referring to players like Lizette, Celine Boutier, Charley Hull and Anna Nordqvist.

You are right to point out that there are some playing very well and steady ... and I concur with your observation. It is a bit challenging and perhaps unfair to make a general statement such as I did as it cannot be applicable to everyone in that group. But, to be fair, I did not state that *all* had cooled off, but rather *many* seem to have cooled off. In Anna's case, she has been out of sorts all season long and not competing at a level to which she had become accustomed. Anne Van Dam did not even qualify for the Asian swing.

Meghan, Brittany A., Annie and Marina are playing at the upper mid tier...I suppose one could persuasively argue that this is where they should be in relative terms ... it just seemed to me that they could reach newer levels of performance, building on the Solheim Cup experience...performance improvements do come more gradually.

The top "cuppers" that you referred to (the Kordas, Kang, Thompson) should be playing at higher levels on a more consistent basis. Georgia and Brontë are knocking on the door of greater consistency and performance...but they are where one could reasonably expect. @ChronicSlicer ... I hope I've explained my thoughts a bit better.

Yes, the remaining events are all limited field, non-cut tournaments. Given that having higher CME points no longer gives a player any advantage in the tour championship, perhaps the players are simply "slacking off", as they've already qualified for the final event.

I suppose we should also figure in the fact it's been a long season, I can assume regardless of playing in the Solheim or not, players are getting beat down and tired. Maybe Jin Young is an exception lol.

In regards to Anne Van Damm, she has had a rather poor year (1 top ten) missed 2/5 cuts in Majors with a T44 being her best finish at a major. I guess the SC brought out the best in her. Hopefully she can settle into things a bit more next year.

Jessica Korda has basically been playing typical Jessica Korda golf, 4-5 top 10's a year, a win here and there.Other than her 2014 season she seems right on par with her previous seasons. Jess at the SC was like a totally different person, hopefully that person comes back and hangs around for awhile lol.

Lexi got hot from April til mid July then vanished as well.

In the end of things maybe we expect to much of these folks, they are human after all.

@ChronicSlicer ... "In the end of things maybe we expect to much of these folks, they are human after all."

And that would be consistent with my point about trying to sustain the higher levels of performance on display at the Solheim Cup. It is always a challenge to stay focused on one's performance and the "variables" that contribute to the higher level of performance.

I think it's reasonable to conclude that the ability to stay focused and to sustain that higher level of performance throughout an entire season is what separates top players and all time "greats" from the good players.

@agolf1

In Gee Chun officially accepted a sponsor invite to play BMW Ladies Championship next week.

Her earning won't count as official money and she won't earn any new Race to CME Globe points.

She'll end the year with $254,494, safely inside Top-80 for 2020 priority. But she'll not only miss CME Group Tour Championship but also 2020 Winter Asian Swings to Thailand and Singapore.

From a world conqueror in 2015 to not even a single LPGA Top-10 all year (not counting the pair event); this script defies logic.

I have not followed In Gee's rise (and stall) with much scrutiny -- I thought her winning the Korean event for her #13 title was her getting over the hump again but it doesn't seem to be the case. What happened? (I've read about focusing too much on sponsorships, etc etc). Did the Singapore Changi airport event that caused her injury (and layoff) really cause her game to dip that bad as well? So much promise then but seemed to have fizzled out... Quite surprised myself upon reading these stats... She looked as fundamentally sound as JYK in her game... As you said it defies logic, just a bit confused with her game these days - there's too many players to follow for me to be able to scrutinize each and every one of them LOL...

I am really surprised with her season. I thought she would have a strong year coming off the success in late-2018. Also, she didn't win in 2017 but arguably her game was at it's best then (only two seasons ago). Will see if she can re-tool for 2020 - too bad she will miss the Thai and SG tournaments. Probably the best swing (and smile) in recent times on the tour.

Next week's field is very strong (as expected). SHP, Nasa, and Lexi (I guess is only playing Japan) are absent but most of the top players along with most of the Koreans are present. Tournament will probably be packed though - almost as much of a pain to attend.

My understanding is that the pressure to succeed weighed heavily on In Gee, especially after the IC and her win last year. She's not the first player to doubt herself out on tour. She went through a rough period early in the season, and her game slipped due to a limited practice schedule. Things seemed to pick up mid-season, and I believe we'll see her bounce back next year.

In Gee was never the same player after that Chang Yi accident because of a permanent damage to her lower back; but she’s still a Top-10 player after that.

Her recent decline started after her win in Korea last year, she hasn’t had a top-10 or shot any scores lower than -5 since.

@agolf1

Good news, In Gee signed up to play Taiwan; your big chance to follow her smiles for hours.

This is an official event; she can change her Race to CME Global and official money standings with a good finish.

Now I'm excited about the Korean event; hope she plays well and carries it to Taiwan.

Years later, and this still hurts. In Gee may be angelic enough to forgive, but not me. I still think in the pressure of the Olympics competition, he saw a weird chance opportunity and took it.

I'm always hoping for In Gee. That is great to hear about her upcoming playing.

It's a pretty good field - hope there are a few good pairings on the weekend. In Gee, Lydia, Minjee (repeat of last year's KEB Hana event in Incheon) or Shibuno-Lee6 would be nice...
