Thoughts on organization of Rules of Golf/Etiquette thread

Recommended Posts

Why would we not organize the Rules of Golf thread around the actual rules of golf?

So basically, a separate thread for each rule and organized as follows:

Rule 1.1 The Game of Golf

Rule 1.2 Standards of Player Conduct

Rule 1.3 Playing by the Rules, etc.

This would avoid the same basic questions getting asked 100 times over and over again and I believe would be a more succinct way of explaining things and providing more clarity overall.

Each thread would have a sticky of what’s stated in the actual rule, a couple USGA approved videos on that specific rule, FAQ’s and so on, such that people asking questions would have a better understanding of the rules and people here who are rules officials or more knowledgeable about the rules can simply reference the rule vs the constant cut and paste that we constantly see.

Thoughts?

i wouldn't mind a sub, that's only stickied posts, one for each rule, that's heavily monitored? So if I want more info about the new OB rule I can go there, including the clarification from last month (?) about how to handle dog legs. Then this can just be the free-flowing argument about pace of play, music, smoking, and flag in/out :)

I think what you are looking for is an archived threads forum. One of the many forums that I frequent, not hard to find as I use the same name there, has an archived section where moderators move insightful and extremely informative posts that are finished and locked to. Thread titles are modified to reflect the subject matter. On this forum with the tag function will make this simpler.

SIM 2 Max 9.0 turned 7.0
TM Sim2 Titaniu, 13.5
TM RBZ 19* hybrid

TM RBZ 22* hybrid
Mizuno JPX 900 HM 5-PW

So there would be several sticky threads? 30, 40, or more, I suppose.

When folks have question, first they have to figure out the correct rule for their situation, so the question can go in the correct thread. Or, start a new thread that lands on page two (or lower) in the forum. Followed by answers pointing to the correct thread, and asking moderators to move the posts. And then there are discussions which span multiple rules, or no specific rule at all, which will either have no home, or live WAY below all the stickies.

I’m all for organized, but this doesn’t sound fun to me.

Seems okay, but The rules are easy enough to find online if they are linked. The problem we would have, and it's a persistent problem, is that people rarely read anything ahead of time. Even posts in the specific thread that answers that thread's question. It would be assuming a lot.

run of the mill driver with stock shaft
a couple of outdated hybrids
shovel-ier shovels
wedges from same shovel company
some putter with a dead insert and
a hideous grip

Many times the questions involve more than one rule or the person posting the question doesn't know what rule applies.

That is fundamental part of a Rules (only) forum.

Present the problem, then others will say what rule(s) apply and why. If one is not immediately obvious, there will be a debate of the whys and wherefores.

But at least the rules will be separated from the dross about wearing caps in the dining room or what to tip the shoe cleaner.

And what has smoking in public got to do with playing golf as opposed to sitting on a park bench?

If people knew the specific rule a particular question was associated with and therefor where to post it - it means they actually read the rule ... if they did that, there wouldn't be enough rules questions to warrant one sub-forum, much less one for each rule.

And we would have nothing to post about except the name on the cover of the rulebook.......

I just looked at the top 3 thread subject lines and they all fit pretty neatly into specific rules:

o Pin is in

o Alignment Aid

o Playing from wrong place

I believe organizing this thread the same way the rules are organized would prevent people asking the same or similar questions 100 times over and allow those who are more familiar with the rules to simply point to the sticky vs having to search and then cut and paste the rule.

I get it, some topics may not fit so neatly into that structure but a good percentage would.

The 3rd one is a great example. Forcing that into a thread on the playing-from-the-wrong-place rule (whatever rule number that is these days) would be a disservice to Augster’s question.

Under which rule would this very thread appear?

Would not be an “all or nothing” deal.

There will always be threads that don’t fit perfectly and that’s fine and we could simply have a separate section for those “one offs”.

For me the rules section of WRX could or should be better organized and we already have the rules in place that would serve as a guide.

More precision, more focused and less of a shotgun approach to the section overall.

there is a bit of an educational aspect to the shotgun approach though - sometimes something will be posted and its not something that I'm thinking of currently but can be useful to gain that knowledge. I'm probably not going to go through each specific rule thread individually. Heavy moderation would be required to keep things tidy.
