Course on the way to Bandon

Our first trip to Bandon later this year. Some are flying into Portand and driving. We are looking for a course on the way ideally half way maybe close to Eugene. SandPines is definitely on the list but I wouldn't mind a mountain course since we have links rounds in Bandon. Bend is a bit out of the way for just one round. That may be a trip in it self.

Langdon Farms should do what you are looking for and right off I-5.

Sandpines, Langdon Farms are right on the way. Tokatee is nice but it is a bit off the path east of Eugene, more mountain like.

I've heard it is a good course but isn't Eugene CC private? Is it possible to get on with a phone call to the course?

My favorite public course around Eugene is Springfield CC, I think its called Pine Ridge Golf Club now

Langdon is 20 min south of Portland, so may not be as far as you want to get. Next would be the OGA course at Woodburn. After that, a few courses in the Salem area.

 

Shadow Hills is the "other" private course in the Eugene area. Very nice course, and a lot easier to get onto than Eugene CC.

 

For public courses, there's a real dearth in the Eugene area. Emerald Valley is south of Eugene and not a bad course, arguably the best public course in the area.

Langdon Farms is on your route and is a "fine" nice course, although I find the constant highway noise off-putting.

 

It's a muni, but I really like the Great Blue course at Heron Lakes in Portland. It's a RTJ Jr design with a lot of water and some really fun holes.

 

More "on the way" to Bandon would be Salishan and Sandpines - now known as Florence Golf Links - as you said. Tokatee is a mountain course but it's going to be even farther out of the way as Elk Ridge.

Im in Salem and you arent going to find a mountain course directly on the way to Bandon.

 

Id hit Langdon in Wilsonville, OGA in Woodburn, Creekside in Salem, or Salishan in Lincoln City.

 

You might he best to take hwy 18 to Lincoln City to play Salishan then head down 101 to Florence then Bandon.

at the risk of being a contrarian, if this is your first trip to Bandon, perhaps go directly to the resort & try the range + putting green, Shorty's, & the Punchbowl.

 

(I haven't played any of the courses mentioned but doubt that any measure up to the resort's four main courses.)

Another option is Pumpkin Ridge. Close to Portland.

 

I have played a bunch of the courses mentioned and have enjoyed them all. I haven't played the private ones.

 

Of the non Bandon courses mentioned I like Pumpkin Ridge, Langdon Farms and Tokatee followed by Sandpines (now Florence Golf Links), Salishan, Emerald Valley

Going to Bandon late March and will likely play Florence on my way from PDX. For $25 at 2p on a Monday is the way to go and will prep me for my rounds st Bandon

Florence is an ok course, but it's not a real prep for the courses at Bandon. It is well back from the ocean and much of the course (almost all the front 9) meanders through woodlands.

 

I'm curious to hear about the conditioning of the course, as the last time I was there it was in not great shape.

Looks like we are adding a day so after a pub night in Portland we will play a round near Portland. Pumpkin or Langdon Farms then staying in Eugene. I'd like to try Tokatee but logistically Florence or Emerald Valley might be better. I was looking for a mountain course since I don't get an opportunity to play these types of courses. We don't go til fall but this was a helpful post.

If you are adding a day, make the drive to Tokatee. From there is 30-45 minutes to Eugene.

If you're adding a whole day, only playing one course, really want to play a mountain course and you're staying in Eugene, then I agree with mallrat - make the drive to Tokatee. It's the only real mountain course between Portland and Bandon that isn't on the east side of the Cascades. If you're looking for a decent course on the way to Bandon but not in Portland, then play Emerald Valley.

 

If you want to get 36 in, play Langdon and OGA, but depending on time of year, you'll need an early start at Langdon.

We played Tokatee Day 1. Fun track in a nice setting surrounded by foothills and mountains in the distance. Breweries in Eugene at night then Emerald Valley the next day. Emerald Valley is a course you could find anywhere but it is a nice course and logistically South of Eugene and right off the expressway. Thumbs up for both courses from my fellow players.
