Isn't Freddy groomed to be captain? He's been assistant enough. My guess is the nod went to Stricker this time around due to the location. Always revenue first... appeal to the local Wisco fans who may drive to the venue and pay ticket prices.

Richard, will you please look at my thread about Sam calling a cut a "chandelle"? Tour Talk I think.

Sure thing Bro?

Here’s Couples’ take on it~

https://www.golf.com/tour-news/2017/03/15/fred-couples-acknowledges-he-will-probably-never-be-picked-ryder-cup-captain

Anyone that has read any of my posts on him knows that I don’t care for him personally however Professionally, he’s faaaaar and away the most qualified of anyone that they have in the current mix.

Like I said, you can’t scrape much harder or lower than Corey Pavin, lolol

It wouldn’t surprise me if they had to convince him to accept the Captancy and he seemed more upset with their waterlogged uniforms than their performance on the course.

Stay well my Friend?

RP

In the end, only three things matter~

How much that you loved...

How mightily that you lived...

How gracefully that you accepted both victory & defeat...

GHIN: Beefeater 24

I agree on Fredddy . Maybe you need to call and put in a good word for him Richard? Entirely possible they’ve black balled him on your behalf. ? lol.

I get that I’m only a Canadian...

Just don’t get Any of it to be honest. The Ryder cup is simply an exhibition. Completely irrelevant in my eyes to a players overall career.

The idea that 12 of the top 20 players in the world don’t know what they’re doing or somehow need to be led or coached in order to hit a golf ball seems ridiculous. The US has made a giant mountain out of a mole hill. The guys go in feeling so much pressure as if they’re going to war and they’re going to die if they don’t win. It’s just a fun event. That’s all it is!

My solution would simply be to have everyone take a minimum of three shots of Jack Daniels on the first tee and one more Every 45 minutes. Guys need to lighten up !

My pick?

How about Pat Perez! He could get everyone coked up in the locker room and hand out custom Nike hi-tops. That’ll loosen up the gang!

Seriously though, this thing needs to be taken way less seriously!

Tiger with the injury and stepping up to be an Assistant and now a Prez Cup captain, seems to be the next in line for a Ryder Cup Captaincy. I wonder what the likelihood of him deferring to Freddie first? Something similar could be the way it happens. It's largely an honorary title. Hard to blame the captains for the players' play.

hahaha, Blade, the PGA board member can’t stand Richard and the feeling is mutual. He was openly cheering for Richard’s opponent, who was from Oakmont CC, when he played him in the semis of the inter-club MP Championship and Richard pointed straight at him in the crowd when he closed the guy out on 16 green. They are both a tad immature, haha. Richard has actually been saying for some time that Fred should get the captain’s nod and I don’t think that there is anyone in Pittsburgh who could hurt Fred’s chances more than Richard with this guy having a vote??take care Blade :) Madison

this could be the future

2020 in the US: Steve Stricker (age 52)

2022 in Italy: Zach Johnson (age 45)

2024 in NYC: Phil Mickelson (age 54)

2026 in whatever spot in Europe shows the money: Phil again (if he lost or tied in 2024, he's trying again, if he won he's trying to be the first to win on the road since Tom Watson)

2028 at Hazeltine: Tiger (age 52)

2030 in Europe: Tiger again if Phil went 1-0-1 or better

2032 at Olympic: Dustin Johnson (age 48)

Presumably you would have the said the same thing about the major-less McGinley getting to be captain of Europe in 2014...that worked out pretty good.

Winning a major has jack s... to do with being a good captain.

Winning a major has no predictive value when it comes to being a successful Ryder Cup captain. It's just a tradition that's likely been used to thin the field of candidates. Politics plays a huge part and I've heard and read that Fred's association with the Presidents Cup has factored into his not being a captain yet.

I hope Stricker and future captains will engage a Mark Broadie type who can incorporate objective data and analysis to complement automatic qualifier preferences when it comes to picks and pairings, because I'm sick of losing to the Euros.

Yeah, putting aside whether he makes or doesn't make a good captain candidate, the winning major qualification was something completely arbitrary. If anything, hopefully this will open the door to new ideas in general.

Man. Would I love to be a fly on the wall. The stories that grab me are never ending !

I had to give the neede there a little bit knowing Richards story on Fred.

Hope you and Richard both are doing well , and to the tad immature part. Yes. Aren’t we all.. lol.

Reminds me of a time when my wife and I were first married. She called some guy a “ dirty old man “. Because of an off color comment he’d made that was pretty tame really. I said “ nope. No such thing. We men are all frozen around 16-18 years old and just get uglier. Best we can do is try to manage our dumb moments.” Lol.

A year or so ago ( 17 years later ) she recalled that comment and agreed with me. Lol.

Anyway. Useless knowledge. I’m full of it ! Lol.

So, I guess we’re now fully committed to the idea of milquetoast guys with slightly above average careers and poor Ryder Cup records leading the squad?

Calling it right now, Stewart Cink in 2024.

Stricker a milquetoast? I don’t think so. He’s a savage.

14th in career earnings...yep, slightly above average is dead on :swoon:

A number which means that you’ve been consistent for a long time in the Tiger era of big purses. Very commendable, and lucrative, but 12 tour wins in 25 years is hardly earth shattering.

Agreed. As I said in another thread I started about this (before seeing this one was already started) Stricker is the American version of Luke Donald Disease. And I don’t see how he gets anyone to play hard. If I was someone at that level, I certainly wouldn’t be inspired by a guy who would rather play the John Deere than the British Open.

who cares who the captain is? Stricker will be as good as any

True. The Americans can stink it up with anyone. I wish they would let Watson the computer be captain.

I like Stricker, but when the captain is already blubbering like a baby...

I say bring back Tom Watson.

haha, is he crying already? The matches don't ever start for a year and a half.

During the press conference.

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

I guess if you ruled out players with losing records the US would have nobody under 80 eligible to be captain, but I don't get this one. Steve hasn't exactly shown that he knows how to thrive in Ryder Cup pressure. He's probably a nice guy and a good friend, but I don't know if he can provide alpha male team leadership.

Who would you have chosen?

Thanks for responding?

Cheers?

Ha, this is too funny. At their pace of play, they might be passed out before the back 9.

Personally, I found hard to get worked up about RC until the event actually starts.

I thought the PGA of America had a rule that you had to have won a major to be considered for captaincy.....

Anyhow, good choice.

It was never in stone, though it was an excepted “rule” and was just adhered to through the years however following the debacle in 2014, after the “super group” get together, it was decided that that prerequisite would be dropped, which I always thought was a poor requirement any ways, as though winning a Major had anything to do with being a Leader, cuz as the proof shows, winning Majors has little if any correlation to Leading a group of Men to Victory, at least from the US side, lol

He’s a Class Act and as August mentioned, it would be great if he asked Larry Nelson to join him because along with his prowess as a Player, with 10 Tour Victories, with 3 being Majors, and 19 more on the Champions Tour, he Played on 3 RC teams, amassing a 9-3-1 record, one of the winningest Players ever to represent the US.

Think Larry Nelson could help ya out before a critical match, lol???

Oh yea, Mr. Nelson also actually Led men in combat in Vietnam.

As far as him being to old to relate to today’s Players and team, I hate to tell anyone though true Leadership is much like Class, in that it is timeless and I can tell you that there is no one that I’d rather have sitting across from me and talking to me prior to a critical Ryder Cup Match than Larry Nelson.

But that’s just me~

And I ain’t gonna be on this team?

Anyhoo, thanks for responding RB?

Stay Well?

RP

They focus on Ryder Cup playing record now. Wait, that’s not going to work either since the US has been crushed lately and all the prospective captains stink.

Just have DL3 captain for the next 20 years.

can't wait for the reed drama

Don’t worry he texted everyone that he’s sorry.

They all still hate him.
