Wisconsin in October - still golf season?

Planning a golf trip 2020 to Wisconsin to play Sand Valley etc - just wondering how late into October can we go before its too risky weatherwise? I would go in September but the Ryder Cup will be soaking up tee times and accommodations.

Plenty of great golf in October. It will vary a little by county, but 3rd week is usually peak season for fall colors, which are beautiful. You will be dealing with leaves, but it's my favorite time for golf. Best weather will be afternoon usually. If you play early, may get into the 40's, but 60's are common during the day. Temps can be a little unpredictable, but are normally pleasant.

I think Chinaski nailed it. I'm a couple hours north of your destination, and we are generally open until the first week of November.

October is usually sunny and low humidity. It tends to get cool and rainy in the second half of October.

 

If you are playing courses like Sand Valley and Whistling Straits, leaves aren't as much of a factor.

The other thing to consider is the amount of daylight you have.

If you're going to play 36 in a day, you may run into cool weather, and possible frost delays.

 

The major courses around Wisconsin (Erin Hills, Kohler, Sand Valley) all have really good courses nearby.

Erin Hills has Washington County;

The Bull is near Kohler;

Lake Arrowhead (36 holes) is a couple miles from Sand Valley, with SentryWorld and Lawsonia (also 36 holes) an easy drive.

 

Leaves would not as much of a factor at Erin Hills / Washington County and Sand Valley / SentryWorld / Lawsonia-Links.

October golf in Wisconsin can be some of the best golf. I played both sand valley and mammoth dunes in late october this last season, and I played there at the same time of year in the previous season. Last season the weather was cold and windy. There were huge frost delays, but once we got out the course was in great shape and we had a blast. Walking certainly makes playing in 30-40F degree weather possible. However, the year before the temperature was in the 70s and it was sunny as can be.

 

Long story short, October weather can be a gamble. You could get warm and sunny, or cold and windy. I would say you have a good chance of avoiding rain that time of year. The courses are in the best shape in the fall. The grass has had time to mature after coming out of winter, and generally is in fantastic shape.

Mosquitos are gone for the most part by mid-September. While it would most likely be out of your way, the avatar above-Turtleback- is a real Hidden Gem.

Look for deals the later weeks of October as well. I know Sand Valley is like 105 in October and The Straits is less than 200(at least it was in 2016)
