Palm Springs area trip

Recommended Posts

In a couple weeks I am going as a single for 3 days. I am staying in the La Quinta area, flying into Palm Springs. I am playing PGA West Stadium and SilverRock the 2nd day. I am looking for 2 more rounds. The first round will have to be a twilight round as I get into PS around 2:30. So I was looking for something close to the airport. 3rd round will be an early morning round on my way to the airport (but not super strapped for time, later flight).

I am looking for courses that are in great shape, and aren't in housing developments. Price isn't really a problem. I am leaning towards firecliff as one of those 2 rounds right now. I know silverrock has gotten some hate since the reno, but it is right by PGA west and looks like a super cool natural area/course surrounding.

Thanks for your help.

close to the airport and worth playing, Encena.

Troon facility and almost always in very good condition.

Landing at 2:30, you'll be lucky to get in 9.

Taquitz does have driving range and close to airport.

I did read that there was some impact fro the rains, but shouldn't be an issue in a few weeks.

And for additional round, without housing, I would recommend Eagle Falls in Indio. Clubhouse is in a trailer and A weird location behind the Fantasy Springs casino. But the course is one of my favorites that is not private.

Are rounds in the area usually really slow? I figure if I land at 230 and tee off by 330 that gives me just under 4 hours. I am going the week after daylight savings so sunset is around 7pm, so will have light until at least 7:15. Not really expecting to get a full 18 in, but would assume I could push 15 or so. I usually play a full 18 at my course in an 1:45 but that is first one out which won't be the case obviously.

Thanks for the info

I second the suggestion for Eagle Falls. Both courses at Desert Willow are really good. I'm one person who didn't hate the renovation at Silverrock, I think a couple of holes were improved, although the new par-3 isn't one of my favorites, and a drivable 18th can be a bit of a problem. On the other hand, its right at the base of the mountains, so its really dramatic. If you can get out on Classic Club for your early morning round, you'll have a great time, and not be too far from the airport for your departure.

Would you prefer classic club over Firecliff at Desert Willow?

I've only played Firecliff once, probably 3 years ago, played Mountain View more recently. The Desert Willow courses have always been in really good shape, and run really well. Same at Classic Club. I think I'd give Classic Club the nod by a very small margin, but its going to be good golf at either one.

Dark at 7:15? You ever been here? It is primetime season and slow rounds everywhere. Good luck finishing 9 holes your first day.

Nope never been there, that is why I am asking advice. What is your question about 7:15? I am confused by your question mark about that. Literally data that you can find online. Doesn't matter where you are, if you have 3 hours to play you should be able to get in more than 9 holes even if it is peak season.

Heading to PS tomorrow for golf trip. Ive called around and seems like everywhere pretty much is back to normal... Is that the case? Booked:

Desert Willow Firecliff in the AM (maybe something else in the afternoon)

PGA West Stadium in AM (Mountain, Nicklaus or Norman in PM)

Indian Wells (Player and Celebrity)

Classic Club (before flight home)

That's a nice lineup of courses! Try to sneak down to Eagle Falls after Firecliff if you are looking to play again. Awesome course, and one of the cheaper options. We were there last month and I miss it already. I am jealous, play well!

We were there the week of the flood (14 February) and the next day we visited Nicklaus Tournament, Greg Norman, Desert Willow, Shadow Ridge and Classic Club and you couldn't even tell that it had rained the day before!

We were blown away at the condition of the courses - mowed and striped to perfection and the bunkers were superb as well.

Heck, Desert Willow and Shadow Ridge weren't even on the cart paths.

From what I've heard Cimarron and Taquitz Creek are still closed or only partially open and Indian Canyons got hit pretty hard as well.

I would second the recommendation of Eagle Falls as it's one of our favorites and the least expensive course that we play when we're out there.

Wish I was still there!

Shadow Ridge and Firecliff are indeed right across the street from one another so logistically perfect.

Was thinking either Desert Willow Mountain or ShadowRidge (looks like its across the street) after Firecliff if Im up for another round... Really looking forward to this trip. I go to Scottsdale often so excited to compare the two areas.

I played Shadow Ridge in January, its a good choice. Its been a year since I played Mountain View, so I won't say its better or worse than Shadow Ridge, both are really solid courses. Since you're playing in the morning at Desert Willow, you won't go wrong by staying right there and playing the other course in the afternoon. As I remember, the food and service is good at Desert Willow. If you can save a bit of time by NOT getting in your car, enjoy a leisurely lunch and then play the second round, that's the way I'd go.

Just my opinion, but Mountainview is quite a bit below Firecliff at Desert Willow. I have never played Shadow Ridge so can't comment on that one. Again, just my opinion, but we didn't really care for Mountainview.

I am also going to Palm Springs next week, first timer. How busy are the courses in the early evening (4pm or so)? Trying to decide if I want to play 9 or just hit the range my first evening. Depending on busy the courses stay (probably Classic Club) potentially more than 9.

I would bet that by 4pm there won't be a soul there. We were there this time last month, and we had a couple of later tee times (1ish in the afternoon) and I think we were the very last tee time of the day. I think most play in the morning, I would guess it will be very quiet at that time.

Another option is the "Walk The Wells" special at Indian Wells , $35 at 4pm and you should be able to do 9 holes no problem. Beats going to the driving range.

Thanks for the info. That is my hope. If I can get a pretty empty course I can fly through or take my time hitting multiple shots etc.

I doubt it, you can check the available tee times on Teeoff.com or on their site directly and it seems to be always wide open at 4pm.

Just got back from Palm Springs. Place was awesome. May replace Scottsdale for favorite winter destination. Played Classic, PGA West Stadium, Firecliff and SilverRock. I'd say Classic and Stadium were 1A and B, Firecliff was 2, beautiful course fun layout, but pretty "easy" resort course. SilverRock sucked. Pretty, but I wouldn't play there again. It felt way too cramped and reminded me of a Chicago Muni with mountains.

The other 3 courses were great though. I will definitely be going back. Also, I tee'd off at Classic at 4:40 and was able to get 18 in after I passed a 4 some of a practicing high school golf team. Never saw another golfer.

Going to be in Palm Springs in a couple weeks for a golf trip. Anybody got any current must plays and avoids?

So far it looks like we’ll be booking times at Classic Club and one of the Laquinta course. My wife is game to play either of the courses the PGA Tour use for The Desert Classic. I know the Stadium and Nicklaus courses are going to be challenging tracks but which one will less diabolical?

The obvious answer is the one not designed by Pet Dye, which would be the Nicklaus Course.
