How do you release the club?

Years ago I would watch a video on the release by Mike Malaska and couldn't for the life of me understand what he was getting at. Here's the video:

After many, many years of casting the club and not understanding why, I then came across this video by Monte Scheinblum blew me away:

I realised that what monte was describing (in a much more simple way that my simple brain could process) was the same release that Mike Malaska tries to demonstrate with a steering wheel or tennis racket (why he never picked a club up and showed it the same way as Monte I'll never know.

So up to now I have either pulled down on the handle and flipped my hands around impact or tried to hold the angle in my right wrist, both of which inevitably led to my casting of the wrists really early in the downswing.

My question to you all, how do you release the club? What are your feels?

I ask as this weekend I'll be getting down the range, and my feel, given what Jack Nicklaus used to say, will be to start my forearm rotation as hard as I can as soon as my arms start down. Does this sound like the correct release?

From delivery position, I extend my arms away from my body.

With rotation it appears like this

without rotation it would look like this

I learned doing this drill:

https://www.instagra.../p/BtPaDycgQ__/

This looks good but isn't that encouraging a 'rolling' of the wrists?

Modern teaching seems to be about holding off the release, and this seems to be more about rolling the right hand over.

I have a bit of flip in my swing so this thread is very relevant to my interests.

I do this drill a lot and also with my lead arm. Great drills for training the arms in a good release. Though I prefer to swing it and extend the arm and not just stick it into the ground.

I'd run away from anyone trying to teach me to hold off the release.

Your body rotation has to be correct. If your sternum gets farther away from the ball in transition you have no choice but to flip because you couldn’t reach the ball otherwise.

Your wrists will roll at some point, the key is when: not before contact.

I don't recommend flying wedges as you will lose power and technically it's avoiding a release.

The release really goes more in hand with using the body's rotation.

In my mind it's "touch the ball first with your body's rotation and then let go with the arms".

If your body isn't really in the correct impact position, it's rather pointless to focus on the release because you will never get it right without it.

I find it fascinating that there are so many different opinions on how to release. I do think that there can only be one optimal way that the majority of tour players do, would be very interested to know what their feel is as a consensus and when they feel it.

I did try the flying wedge thing for a while, have no idea how anyone manages to generate speed that way as I lost all 'whip' from my feel.

IMO it's best to learn the release by hitting 3/4 punch shots. Similar to how Tommy Fleetwood swings.

I had a friend practice this drill on the range and he was taking divots and compressing pretty quickly.

You will hear a low pitch thump and really hit the ground pretty hard if you're doing it right. It will feel like the ball is trapped between the ground and club, even though that's not really what's happening.

But everyone has their own release feels that differ. I believe Tiger for a while would pick the ball clean.

Put simply, I like to say that a cast is simply a proper release done too early. That same hand motion is correct but should be done at the ball, rather than before the ball. The end of the release is what hits the ball

I tend to link this image.

It's a bit of an over-simplification, but the release is the movement from radial deviation to ulnar deviation.

Again that is interesting.

So far in my golfing life, I have released via image 1 & and also tried image 2. The video I linked at the start of this thread has Monte and Mike explaining it's more like image 3.

What a confusing game this is.

How do you throw a baseball? How do you swing a bat? You just let it go...

I do neither haha.

Don't play much bat and ball in the U of the K.

Ever throw a rock? Swing an axe into a tree? Play cricket?

Genuinely have never swung an axe or played cricket.

Thrown some rocks though. Long time ago mind.

Don't worry, I still understood the reference.

They're certainly elements. And certainly important elements. I wouldn't be able to quantify a ratio of the 3, but they most certainly do not all contribute equally (at least leading to impact).. Give it a try though! Mess around. Hold the club a couple feet before impact/release, still fully cocked, and try all of them, and combinations of them, and see what feels like what. See what it takes to get the face to the ball correctly.

Have you ever watched cricket?? It's enough to make me want to swing an axe for the first time straight into my flatscreen.

Lol. I have stumbled upon it a few times. No idea how scoring works so I never give it much attention. Not on tv here in the US much either.

Thinking about releasing the golf club makes me think of trying to throw an oversized ball during dodgeball...

So that would be more like a bowling type of movement with the trail hand, extension to flexion right?

Man, I don't even know. The only time flexing and extending are used in the same thought from.me, it has to do with playing around in my bedroom with my wife...

I release the club passively. Swing the club toward the target and just let it release.

Steve

That's interesting Steve. Do you think you just don't give it any thought which leads to a passive feel as you ingrained the release a while back or do you actively try and keep it passive?

What I think is that if I swing the whole club in the direction of the target the wrists will uncock and square the face to the target automatically, so long as I do nothing to inhibit the natural release. I was once conscious of swinging the club from toe up when it's parallel to the ground before impact to toe up when it's again parallel post impact, but its been a lot of years since I gave that any thought.

Steve .
