Poll: Most beautiful irons ever.....

Recommended Posts

All three are 7i's, the Top the Staff Tour 100's, the middle is my Staff 59 Tour Blade, the last iron in my bag and the bottom iron, an Ode to BIG STU, a Mac Custom Tourney(Oakmont Country Club Logo) from back in the day. Madison hit it and really liked it, though she'd get another shaft, lolol

The difference in size between my Tour Blade 7i and the 100 is amazing, lolol.

The 100 is like a GI blade compared to it, and that 100 is thinner than the Mizzy 4, 5 or 18, lol

Cheers

Hey Richard! Nice to see those OCC diamond backs back in circulation. Those came from me, BIG STU is an original SS2 man IIRC. Or is he an SS1 guy? Or did he go back to Precisions? lol, too many nice blades to keep track of.

If anyone out there wants to get a sense of how strong young Jack was, take one of those old MacGregor diamond back designs with the mile long hosels...grab the two or three iron....then head to the range and try to hit a high towering fade with it. You really can't understand it until you've tried it.

Anyhow, here's some more pics of those OCC diamond back from back when I had them.

It's a little hard to see because of the lighting, but the ferrules are black-white-green-gold-green up top, with one white ring at the bottom. MacGregor always had the classiest ferrules. Like these guys:

I had an offer for em but I’m putting them in a glass coffee table as a gift for Bob Ford from a bunch of us. The ferrules are the best!!

Maddie hit em and the long irons are brutal, lolol. She loved the mid irons though they could use another shaft, lol

Thanks again?

Yeah, the mid and short irons are sweet. Those long irons though.....oh boy, look out, lol. I thought about putting Dynalite Golds or Flighted Rifles in em, but it's almost impossible to save the ferrules and move them to a new shaft once the plastic gets to be that old, so all original they stayed. Glad to hear they're going to end up in Bob's living room. That's a great resting place for a very cool (and impossibly rare!) set of irons.

Cheers!

Yea, that’s why Madison didn’t mess with the shafts because the ferrules wouldn’t take the transfer. According to an old timer who happens to have a set in his library, there were less than 10 sets of those made. He thought 7-8 sets and all sold. They also made about a dozen of the Mac Tourney blonde persimmon drivers with the Oakmont logo medallion in the sole and there were less of these made.

Funny story about how I came to acquire it, lolol. So this member, and he was a Player, a 2-3 time Club Champ and he had one of the drivers, and I’m rearranging stuff in my trunk and I pulled out two Staff brown persimmon drivers, both with “Sam Snead” engraved in the sole. He asks about em and I said yea, Sam had given me a few and I was gonna use em as prizes at our upcoming one day Stag.

He asked if I had the liberty of Playing for one of em in our game that afternoon and I said sure, depending on what my club would be when I won, lol. I kid you not, that’s exactly what I said, lol. He sorta laughed, set his bag down and pulled the blonde Mac Tourney Custom driver out and said “is this good enough,” lol?

Long story short, I won the driver, lo.

Better part is that though those Staff drivers were indeed made for Sam, he never ever hit or Played em cuz as great as their irons were, their woods sucked, lolol.

So he Played Mac drivers, and after Toney Penna split from em he Played his stuff and he would just have a Staff sole plate put on the Mac or Penna and off he’d go.

So Staff would give him a bunch of drivers, and as he drove up and down the east coast when he could versus flying, he’d open the trunk and pull a driver out when he had to give something away and all these peeps with Staff drivers with “Sam Snead” engraved on the sole plate thought that they were gettin a club that Sam Played, and when he’d come to town, he’d bring 10-15 down to Pete’s shop and say, “go hit these please,” so that it would look like he had actually hit em and Pete would in turn hand em to me and me and a Bud would take em down to the line and bang some balls and put some marks on em, lol. We were Plusses so while they weren’t as perfect as Sam’s obviously were, we left the “perfect” ones and wiped off any that Sam wouldn’t have hit, lmao. We’d give him his clubs back, he’d thank us and offer us each a fiver though we never accepted, lol.

So even if I’d have lost that day, I wouldn’t have lost anything of value, at least not close to the Big Mac that I won, lolol??

I’ll never forget when I first told this story and a member from VA had indeed been given a Snead Staff driver at an outing that Sam had Played in and he was bummed out and I felt badly, lol. While I can’t guarantee that I put the ball marks on it, I can pretty much guarantee that Sam didn’t, as he hated those drivers??

Apologies for the irrelevant novella however these memories crack me up and make a long day a lil shorter, lolol

Oh, and another thing that I never have nor never will do is to sell something that I was gifted.

That my Friends, is tacky as hell, lol?

Thanks again JM ?

Stay well Gents?

Thought this might be interesting and fun. Please post pics of your all-time most beautiful irons.

here are two of mine....

Quite a few of my past 40 sets have been beauties including my very first set in 1975 MacGregor CF4000 black faced blades. Still have them and they look so thin next to about anything not that I am as goofy about that as many in the “thin topline and sole,no offset, non glare, etc, etc crowd. Some Hogan’s in early 90s,Mizunos,Titleist irons, I have a current set of Wilson/Staff C-300 Forged that can stand up to most any but has new technology.

I heard that shops were afraid of toxic fumes if they heated the shafts/hosels. I have no firsthand technical knowledge like you though, and I don't know how you pull the shafts. I also heard they couldn't be bent more than 1 degree, so that info I got was clearly wrong. Too bad you're not in my neighbourhood, I'd get you to do it. Too much of a hassle for me to send them to Ping

Whoever is telling you these stories, stop listening to them. You are getting some really bad information.

Yes, the dust is not good. Wear a mask. And yes, they can break during bending, as all cast clubs can. But I've personally bent them up to 4 degrees strong to turn a SW into a GW.

Realistically, you can get better performance out of many more modern clubs. But BeCu is always something special to play.

Those are no doubt nice, but I like the more angular 45 series a little better. For the last few years I've been going back and forth between a chrome set with KBS Tours and a raw set with Steelfibers, depending on how the old joints are feeling. Haven't found a modern set I like better.

Those rust ones are very cool, I really like the wave in the z Forged better than the sharp of the 785 and the thinner profile is awesome but the ease of them is what sold me, the 965 are nice as well but not quite as forgiving imho

A funny thing about the new Z Forged is they look better in person than they photograph, at least IMHO.
