Playing golf in France?

parpar41

Recommended Posts

Looking for feedback from GolfWrx members who have played golf in France, please.

What course(s) in France did you play? What was the pace of play? Would you go back again? How much was the green fee?

I have intentionally kept the questions very broad and general in the hope of encouraging a greater number of responses.

While we have a number of well-travelled GolfWrx members from many different countries all over the world, it seems that not many people post in the Europe/EU travel forums ( except, of course, in the thread about their golf trips to the United Kingdom and Ireland).

If you have played golf in France, then please share your experience.

Thank you to Chanceman and to Jedaigeki for their responses. Much appreciated.

Shows how cool GolfWrx is: A guy from Canada (that's me) starts a thread on a discussion board based in the US (that's GolfWrx) , asking about playing golf in France and he gets an answer from a member in Australia and another from a member in the UK.

What did we do before the web came along?

That said, seems there is not really a whole lot of interest here about golf in France.

Been a few weekend breaks, always pretty slow on a Sunday even though the courses are pretty clear. I think the members take a baguette, some brie and a bottle of vin rouge out with them and have a le picnic whist going round. From my experience you need to be walking up behind the members before they let you through.. We played Arras and a couple of the Le Touquet courses the last time we went.

Courses played were in good condition, and as i say, pretty clear. Green fees were about the same as UK prices (in the region of $60), but the last time we went there weren't the golf tee time apps that am sure some have signed up for so midweek should be pretty good prices.

Hope that helps a little

I live next to the border and my home club is actually located in France. There are plenty of good or great courses scattered across the country, it really depends on which area you're targeting.

Wherever you may go, pace of play might be pretty slow on Saturday and Sunday. Handicap system in France starts at 54, it means that you may wait behind pretty beginner (or just bad) players.

Most clubs will charge about €50 to €80, but it can be way more expensive at some more exclusive places.

Dont' hesitate if you have more precise questions

I'm currently in Lyon (live in Norway), so making the most of this opportunity to get an early start to the season. Played my first round two weeks ago, and have tried two different courses - Golf Club de Lyon, and Golf de La Sorrelle, and both were excellent courses. Still had winter greens and maintenance, which was reflected in a discount at La Sorrelle. I have located 5 courses within an hour drive from me, and there are more, but these 5 seem to be the longest ones. Green fees are around 50-60 euros mid week, and higher on the weekend. I think their high season starts 1st of April i.e. no more discounts. Pace of play was rather quick - took about just under 4 hours, and this was following a foursome (we were 3 of us). Then again, my playing buddy and I have the luxury of playing mid week so there are less people on the course - can't comment on weekend play. Am going to try Golf BlueGreen Chassieu tomorrow.

I'm also open for any more suggestions in the Rhone Alps region - my one wish is to go to Evian and play the course there before I head back to Norway in June so we'll see :-)

@vtpachyderm

Which courses did you select on your short list ?

There are some good courses in Rhône Alpes region. Near Lyon, Sangliers Course at Golf de Lyon is probably the best, while Brocards, the second layout is good too. Salvagny, Gouverneur (Breuil Course) and Bresse (my favorite in the area, but maintenance has been hit and miss during last two years, a pity...) are all good tracks within about 30 minutes from Lyon. Evian is a great course, while not close to Lyon. Half way to Evian is my home club Bossey, a challenging course designed by Trent Jones Jr (check link on my gallery). A bit further in the Alps, Chamonix (Trent Jones Sr design) is a really great layout, fairly flat and offering stunning views on Mont Blanc and others peaks ! Don't hesitate if you need further details.

Oh wow! Thanks for the tips. I've played Sangliers, La Sorrelle, and Blue Green Chassieu to date. Gouverneur, and Golf du Clou are the other two that I was thinking of. I had heard about Chamonix and will give it a go later on in May or whenever you think is a good idea as I guess they've still got a wee bit of snow.

I guess I'll have to give Salvagny and Bresse a play. Bossey sounds a bit more doable as a day trip from Lyon than Evian so that'll be on the list definitely. Thanks again!

Just browsed through your pics - amazing!

Near Biarritz, I would pick Chiberta, Moliets (both played) + Hossegor and Seignosse (not played).

Near Bordeaux, Médoc (played) and Grand Saint-Emilionnais (not played) are first choices.

Bon Jour!

Funny, I was reminiscing this morning about our trip to France this past May, including my round of golf at Disneyland Paris. My wife and I took a cruise up the Rhone River, from Nice to Lyon, and then spent a few days in Paris. The final leg of the journey was a couple of days at Disneyland Paris, before heading home. I enjoy playing golf at the Disney courses in Florida when we're there, and she suggested I might want to play this one, so I jumped at the chance.

The course is a few kilometers away from the park/hotels, and there is no Disney transportation provided, so I needed to arrange for a taxi. I wanted to play as early as possible, but the course didn't open until 08:15 which I found a bit unusual. Once at the course, the staff was helpful in getting me set up with a rental set of clubs, shoes and some golf balls (didn't bring my gear, as this wasn't planned) and a complimentary locker. They explained the course routing (3 nines, so you play a combination of 2) and sent me off as a single. I played on a Friday morning and the course wasn't very busy at all. I think I paid 65 euros for the round, plus the rental gear. There were other golfers there (all locals, it seemed), but with the 3 different routings the course spread us all out, and I rarely saw another golfer during my round.

The course itself was very nice, with some impressive and beautiful holes, and some that were more standard fare, but overall very well maintained. The fairways were generous and the greens rolled true. A few of the holes had some adjacent houses, but for the most part the course ran through scenic countryside. Playing alone, on a nearly empty golf course in a beautiful part of the world, was both surreal and wonderful. My only gripe might have been with the old, mismatched clubs they set me up with, but I actually played pretty well with them. I was in France, playing golf on a beautiful day on a lovely golf course. Nothing to gripe about!

So, yes, I'd say my (limited) experience with golf in France was fantastic, and will definitely play there again if I have the opportunity.
