Cleveland CG1 Black Pearls

Had mine since 2005ish.
Taking them down for rehab, have some Mizuno MP-20s coming in used.
I'll be sanding, re-bluing the heads.  The original S300 shafts are pitting and seem a little bent at the tip over time.
So I'm putting in KBS Tour black nickel shafts...that will be great afterwards.

Love the topic!

I’ve owned more gear than I should admit, and I move in from even the clubs I love!  Here are the ones I most regret:

Driver:  Titleist TS3 with HZRDUS Smoke 6.5 is currently in my bag, and it is my favorite driver by far. Never had more confidence than I have now. Honorable mention goes to the old Titleist 983e. Bought it for $17 in the used bin in 2011, and it beat everything I put it up against!

Fairway: 15* Nike T60 with Diamana Redboard 73x. This thing was absolutely magical deep-faced forgiveness wrapped in a perfect, long-hoseled, pear shaped package!  I could do anything with it. I remember playing a tournament where one of the holes was a short, pine tree lined golfer right. No one could cut the corner because of the trees, and there was not enough room at the dogleg to hit driver. I played a sawed off, stinger knockdown fade (actually more of slice) that was the most perfect shot I’ve ever played. Like a dummy, I decided to try a different shaft and ruined the redboard when i pulled it. The club was never the same, but I will never get rid of it. Honorable mention:  nothing comes close!

Hybrid:  Titleist 910h with MFT Diamana Ahina. To this day, I do not believe a better hybrid has been made. The adjustable hosel was a game changer for me. When I put this in the bag, I started reaching par 5s I’d never previously reached and the long par 3s became a lot easier. Honorable Mention: Adams Idea Pro with Matrix Altus regular.

Irons:  Srixon z785 with Modus 120s. This is the hardest because I’ve owned SO many great sets of irons. I mean TONS!  I love blades, and could rattle of 10 sets of MBs that was a pure joy to play, including the MP14s, MP4s, 714MBs, Blueprints, Scratch SB1s, etc. I also absolutely loved the Ping s56sand my current 620CBs rank very highly. That said, the Srixons were simply the best performing, best feeling irons I’ve ever owned. The v-sole, IMO, is the single most impactful feature on any club I’ve ever tried. Not only did it make turf interaction a dream, it seemed to guide the club through the swing, down the target line and towards the hole. I never hit more shots directly at the flag than I did with these irons. Oh, and they felt absolutely incredible. Honorable Mention: Mizuno MP14. Iron royalty, IMO.

Wedges:  Nike SV Tour with DGS400. These were the surprise winners for me. I have played Vokeys, MDs, Cleveland’s, Scratch, etc. and even some hand ground custom beauties, but the SV Tours - especially the satin 60/10 - helped me play my best golf. They were perfectly suited to my green side techniques. When I switched to them, my short game improved immediately. Honorable Mention: Cleveland RTX4

Putter:  I’ve never had one I like - even a little. All putters suck and putting should be banned from the game. Since I have to choose, I’ll go with my 30 year old bronze Ping Anser that I bought for $2.99. I can’t make anything with it, but at least I look like a killer on the greens whose weapon of choice is a gnarled handled six shooter from the Wild West with dozens of notches scratched into its worn leather holster. I mean, who else would use a 30 year old putter but a real roller that makes everything he looks at with it, right?  Honorable Mention: 60* Scratch 1018 wedge. I suck at putting so badly that I once went 10 rounds or so putting exclusively with the leading edge of my lob wedge. The 1018 was particularly effective for this purpose because it had a very straight leading edge that made lining up putts a breeze!

A used set of Lynx Predators convinced me not to give up golf when I was a kid trying to learn the game in the late 70s and early 80s with a cheap starter set of Wilson clubs.  I think the woods weren’t even wood. Some kind of hard plastic is what it seemed to be.

Taylormade Tour Cleek II. My first ever club when I was a kid, I had it reshafted multiple times and I played it through high school until it was stolen along with the rest of my bag. Not long for its loft (19*) given that it was ~20 years old at that time, but so, so predictable and easy to hit from gnarly lies.

Here is another vote for the Orilmar Tri-metal.  I had the 14+ with the EI-70 shaft.  Was a game changer, kicked out the old TM 13 degree tour spoon with a titanium shaft I had in the bag for over 10 years.   I also played the 5 wood, which was good, but spun more than I liked, the 14+ 3 wood was special, very long yet still easy to hit off the fairway.  I thought at the time I would also like the driver, but it wasn't even close, I couldn't hit it, but man that three wood.  Why I ever got rid of it, I don't know (well yeah I do, the internet and golf forums).  Not until my current G410 LST have I been able to hit a 3 wood similar to the Orlimar....

My favorite memory with that club is this, I semi topped a driver off our first hole, a 400ish par four.  It didn't even quite make it to the fairway.  I had about 285-290 probably to the flag, but had a good lie in the rough.  The guys I was playing with were laughing at me.  I hit the Orilmar like a rocket about 275 (bit of a flier), somehow got it on the front of the green and made about a 40-50 footer for birdie...... they weren't laughing anymore....
