The yardstick putting challenge

The whole test takes 10-15 minutes. Get an aluminum yardstick (36"), ideally not much wider than a golf ball, and set it on a flat surface (I use a hardwood floor). Place the ball in the hole on one end of the ruler, and putt to a coin on the ground just beyond the opposite end. Roll 100 putts; how many hit the coin?

 

I've done it every night this week and have "made" between 74 and 82 each attempt, which I think is pretty damn bad for a straight 3-footer with every possible aiming advantage. I'm interested in how well others do, though.

Any drawbacks to using a standard wooden yard stick?

Would it not be important to make sure the floor and the stick are perfectly level?

On a ruler 99-100% depending on the day.  The putting rail is much harder and I’m probably 70/100

Haven’t seen that one in person. Yes putting rail is the one I was talking about.  Starts getting narrower gradually.  Much harder than a yard stick

Iteach....do you happen to know where to find one of the putting rails? I looked online but can't really find one anymore now that YES is out of business.

 

After this weekend shooting 76 with 35 putts literally missing every putt from 3.5' to 15' and 12 greens I am rededicating myself to working on my putting before I quit golf.

Got a 48" aluminum yardstick [at Home Depot for $11. ](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Empire-48-in-Aluminum-Straight-Edge-Ruler-4004/100118266 "at Home Depot for $11. ") They have 60" and 72" models online.

 

I put a wooden yardstick at a right angle: 1) so my putter would be the right height when setting up, and 2) to check that my alignment is square.

 

The yardstick is 2" wide, or slightly less than 1/2 a cup. To make it all the way, the face angle would have to be less than 1.2% off.

 

To make it all 4 feet, you have to make a good stroke. Most of my putts that fall off the rails do so in the last 2 to 6 inches, so I don't know if a 36" yardstick at this width would be as informative unless it's only 1" wide.

 

36"x1" means your face angle is less than 0.8% off if you make the putt.
