Sub 70 Clubs

Demo clubs arrived and took some pics to share. My current gamers are Wishon 560 MC and they are great feeling clubs. They have old school lofts (7 iron 35*).

I have not swung the 699 Pro. My initial impression is they look better in person and they are smaller than expected. The top line is not a thick as I had feared and you can see in the pics it is just a bit thicker than my 560 MCs but nothing that would bother me.

Well pulled the trigger on a used set of the 699 pros with modus 120 stiffs.   My ctaper lites are just too harsh of feel and looking for something different.  I demo'd the 699 and enjoyed them although slightly too big for my taste and think the 699 pro should be just about right.   Added a 4 hybrid in the 939x version as well as my cobra f7 hybrid just spins too much.  Excited to hit them and will report back once they come in and try to make a comparison.

Gentleman I got unlucky today,  I stepped out of office for 20 mins and of course UPS man showed up with my irons and required a signature so hopefully he will be back tomorrow!  Argh...

UPS came early and clubs are in.  699 Pro Modus 120 stiff, and the 939x hybrid 85 proforce shaft stiff.    These were used on line in Very Good Condition on their website and I would agree.  Grips look brand new (MCC 4) and a little face and sole wear on some of the clubs.  Clubs were packaged very well and even got a hat, much appreciated.  Only potential negative is I emailed them to be 2* upright and I do not see that on my packing slip form so I have no way of confirming if this was completed or not...  I will test these out as is and can make adjustment later.

The 939x 4 hybrid  at 21*, or really a 3?, has a nice headcover and I would say the size is right between a large and small head size range.  At first glance seems bigger then my F7 hybrid.

Waggling the 699 Pros in the office compared to my 2016 Cobra Forged tec:  They modus 120 S feel slightly heavier but just seems more solid on the waggle.  I think this 114g Modus vs 110g Ctaper lite might be the sweet spot for weight that I like.  Here are some pics (I did earlier comparison of the 699 irons with my current set and overall the 699 were a little bit bigger/chunkier then the Cobras)  These 699 pros are very close in size to my current gamers maybe slightly, ever so, longer blade length on the long irons which is OK by me.  Rainy here yesterday and today so I will take them out and report back soon.

I reached out to Sub 70 a few weeks ago asking when their hybrids were going to be back in stock.  Received a response almost immediately and the date they gave me was spot on.  I was ready to place my order today, but wanted to ask a few questions regarding swing weight, shafts, etc.  Sent an email.  Boom - answered within just a few minutes.  IMPRESSIVE.  Placed my order for a 939X 3H just a few minutes ago.....with that kind of Customer Service (and all the great things I've read about the company and the hybrid in particular) how could I not....

Well, to update my earlier short review - these clubs are amazing. I really hit them well today, and yes, better than my Srixons. I was surprised by that, but they felt less harsh on mishits and the distance and height were perfect. Last time I tried them I didn't have my best ballstriking day, glad I took them out again today. They felt fantastic when flushed, and when I mishit them, I could tell but it didn't feel awful and I got plenty of forgiveness in my opinion.

The black finish is going to wear pretty quickly I think, I could see nicks and some wear on the edges just from being in my bag on a cart (will share some pics tomorrow when I clean them). That being said, the reason I bought these in the first place is because I LOVE black irons but hate the idea of dropping $1k+ only to see them look like arse super quickly.

At this price point, I'm super happy to beat them up and eventually replace them. These clubs are legit.

edit: Below is a photo that shows the finish wearing - I've had these in the bag for 2 rounds. The faces actually still look pristine.

Great looking clubs but that’s pretty bad for just two rounds.

guess the important thing is you can’t see at address 🤷‍♂️

Hard to argue about it for $600, but we'll see. I am playing tomorrow and will keep an eye on the wear. Love them though! Now that I know they work well for me, I ordered a GW to match.

i’ve got the 4H with the Riptide 70s and it’s excellent. Very easy to hit it straight.

Well I don't really know how to say this without sounding off, but, literally the best irons I have ever hit.  There I said it. LOL.  I hate when people say this when reviewing equipment but everything just clicked immediately at the range today with the 699 pros and the hybrid.  I was swinging well today I suppose but the feel of these irons compared to my previous is night and day.  I know the shaft has something to do with it (or a ton) but the Modus 120 seems to be a perfect 'mid' weight.  Very soft feel and now I know what people mean you can feel the shaft load and unload even on 3/4 shots. (the c-taper lites on my gamers only load and feel good on aggresive well struck balls)  I have never honeymooned so much on clubs, I was literally laughing like a kid after hitting some great shots today with my usual playing partner.

Clubs just want to go straight with a mid launch and I was hitting distances that I used to hit as these have good ball speeds off the face I can tell.  I hit the A wedge 3/4 to 5 feet, I hit a P wedge to 3 feet, launched a few 5 and 6 irons nicely on the green.

Another notable was the hybrid.  A par 3 195 yard into the wind that I normally would hit 3 hybrid short or try 5 wood I took the 4 hybrid (21 degree) and put it right straight one the pin and flew the green....into the wind... perfect trajectory. I put another ball down with 5 iron and put a terrible swing on it on the heel and hit a lower shot to right side of greenthat was pin high! I was shaking my head

I'm a typical golfwrx club ho (maybe a 5 on a scale of 10) and this is most excited I have been in a while.  So far so good I will report back after some more rounds.  Edit, also wanted to add the MCC4+ grips feel great too never played them before.  A little squishy but I like the extra beef under right hand.

Thought I would add some comments after 3 full rounds with these.

First, the 2i is amazing. Play it middle of my stance, 3/4 swing, and this thing just hits laser beams that never go above the tree line. This is exactly what I was hoping for and couldn't be happier - a true weapon in the wind.

As for the 9i, I'm loving the feel. By eye, it launches lower, carries longer, and bites harder than my M2 Tour 9i. The M2 Tour would land softer, but not grab and spin back to the same degree as the 639mb. Strongly considering adding a sub70 7-8....must resist....

Nice update.  I have similar one.  The 699 pros flat out perform for me with the modus 120 stiffs.  Hitting the center of the club face often and even on some misshits I'm still getting good results.  Ball flight is just straight with very little movement.  Feel has been good.  Hit 11 GIRs in a 1-2 club windy kinda day last round I played so I was happy.  I have the A wedge (50*) in the 699 pros and first time I have used a 'set' wedge, but it has been a good eleven wedge like others describe and blends into my PW distances nicely and is good for both full shots and 3/4.   Now I'm in the mood to re-work my wedges and might wait for the new Sub70 wedges to come out and match the modus 120 in those clubs.

just as an fyi, I was speaking with Jason a couple weeks ago and he said they will be having some updated wedges coming out later this year.  So may be worth waiting a bit or giving them a call to get details and expected timing.

Any Sub 70 5 wood reviews on here?  Thinking about challenging my trusty V-steel 5 wood.  I like a lower profile 5 wood like the v steel or the cobra offerings.   How does this one compare?

Can't believe we don't have any fairway wood users on here.  If you like the hybrid (I see you have the 21* in your signature), another option would be to go with the 18* hybrid in a bit of a longer shaft.  That's what I ended up doing.

I am a bit late on my review of the clubs.  I've been pretty busy.  The birth of my newborn son took precedence over writing a review.  Truthfully I have only been out couple of times with the new clubs, so its not fair to write up a strong review with only a couple rounds of golf.  I will try my best to get a more complete review of my clubs when I get time over next couple of weeks.

I will say this, having played them a few times few thing stood out.

1) MBs are extremely soft.  I had them adjusted at the PGA superstore and the club fitter told me they were one of the softest clubs he's ever bent.

2) Everyone whos seen them, ALWAYS comments on the look -- the MB blades especially -- they get rave reviews in the looks department.

In my full review I'll comment on strike, feel, playability, and overall course play.
