Sub 70 Clubs

Recommended Posts

I've been upset with my gapping at the top of the bag ever since switching to single-length irons. My previous set my 3i (40.5", loft unknown) was my ~225y club when I hit the sweet spot. Now my 4h at 20* is pretty much my 200y club because, unsurprisingly, taking 3" off the length of a club makes it go shorter 😉

Above that I have a 20 year old 4w that I can't hit and needs to be replaced, which is a ~235y club, and driver, at about 270y.

So I just looked at the Sub70 site and saw a 699U Pro Utility in the pre-owned section at 19.5*, 39.5", with a shaft that hopefully works for me and a midsize grip. Pre-owned but listed as new condition, which I assume means it was built for an order and perhaps the order was canceled...

So that's coming my way 🙂

Does anybody have any pics of their clubs 1-2 years later? I guess the only thing I am concerned about not buying from a major manufacturer is the durability long term and I dont want my clubs to look like they were used in WW2 after a season or two.

No pics at the moment. They hold up as well as any other iron I’ve owned. I’ve basically got 2 full seasons on my irons and I should get a few more seasons out of them.

the sole on my 699 pro 9i. This happened in my first full round. I didn’t notice the pebbles under the crabgrass at the time.

I don’t mind my clubs getting banged up like this, but after just 9 holes it’s annoying, but I’m over it. I just need to avoid missing fairways on a sharp left dog leg next time 😝

Purchasing “black” iron heads, you have to realize these things will happen. Hopefully not after 9 holes 😂 . But if you fancy cosmetics, then black irons heads are not for you. But seeing the “badge” on the center of club face is pleasing to my eye.

Anyway, Great clubs. Longer than my PXG’s with a nice ball flight and stoppage on the greens. Most importantly, they feel really nice. I’m actually really impressed with the performance and feel. I just need more rounds to get used to the softer flex and increased distances I’m getting. Blowing greens are worse than the picture Shown.

My wedges. Bought last summer.

56 gets the most usage AND is my sand club. 60 is chewed up from hitting off a rocky lie.

On the bottom pic the 60 is front (closest), then 56, then 52. You can see the 56 clearly has more face and leading edge wear from more use.

Those are deep gashes into the club. You have metal missing. No finish (black, satin, chrome, raw) will prevent that kind of damage.

Well I thought I was going to have to wait until tomorrow to pick these up but squeezed in time today to run out to Sub 70. The advantage of living a half hour away is the waiting is so much shorter. The disadvantage of course is it’s 15 degrees today and snow on the ground. At least I can get some sim time in with these until spring.10D6A701-1579-4EF6-AC3A-650322926ADF.jpeg.b0681f0eddb315bab9468fac8073f80f.jpeg052F76D1-F73B-4641-8C44-17B518997A33.jpeg.6f7ce7742ee63929e5b217314abb004d.jpeg

Nice!

I grew up in Wheaton and we had moved out to West Chicago by the time I finished HS. I stayed in the midwest for college (actually had a buddy who raced Spectator class at Sycamore Speedway--which isn't actually in Sycamore)...

But I'm happy where I am now. Happy enough that I'll wait for [free] shipping by ground rather than subject myself to that weather.

Sure, it means my new 699 Pro Utility which shipped today won't be here in time for my round on Saturday [forecast 74 and sunny], but I think I'll live without the club for one round... 😉

I'm sure I wont. Especially since the listed condition was "New". As I said, it was probably(?) built for an order that maybe got canceled, or maybe it was received by a customer and sent back, so my guess is that it has never even hit a golf ball.

the only difference.. black is harder to blend/remove those blemishes. I did a similar thing to my SM8 (6 rounds in), that was even worse. But I did some metal work to smooth it out, left no "scars" except normal WaT.  With the 699, that's a before picture. I worked on the sole but I'm not gonna do all that work just to "blue" the metal that will eventually come off..

As much as I use my hitting bay and how much I play (50-60 rounds), I'm sure these Sub70's will hold up well.

I wish I could golf 50-60x per year. If I make it out 3x per month for 7-8 months thats considered a win.

General question, how do you golf that often? Ive always wondered how people have the available time/money to play 3 rounds of golf every week?

I guess if you live in the South where you can golf all year and are retired its possible, but if Im able to get out once per weekend or even every other SAT for the 7ish months you can golf in the Midwest I consider that a win.

I used to golf 3 to 4 times a week when  I lived on and near a GC. Likewise, I also worked at GC and CC in the early 2000's. When I returned to golf 5 years ago, my work schedule allowed me to play 1 to 3 times a week all year round. Only the cold, rain, and windy conditions would prevent me from playing... ah.. NOT lol we still played.

Also, the club I used to belong to, they play 8 to 9 rounds a month before the pandemic and during the pandemic all year round. I quit cause I couldn't play due to my work schedule. But If I had my old schedule 3 days on and 4 days off at the Emergency/Trauma center, I'd be playing and be broke at the same time.

But with the way prices are nowadays, I'd reduce that to 30-40 rounds per yr. The walking rate now is similar to riding rate two years ago. And some riding rates/prices today is good for two rounds two years ago.

haha thats what Im saying! Green Fees are typically $55-80 per round--riding b/c Im lazy. Then you get a couple hotdogs at the turn, a new glove in the pro shop and a cooler full of drinks and it winds up be a $100+ round of golf before you leave.

I can only afford to do that like once every other Saturday/Sunday from APR-OCT

There are ways to golf cheaper if you only do 'Hot Deals' tee times on GolfNow, cut out the food and drinks, ect. But I golf to have fun--if Im going to do it then Im going to do it right.

I have some sim time booked for next week and I volunteered to feed our friends cats a couple times next week. The fact they live 5 minutes from a golf dome has nothing to do with my volunteering. I’m really a good friend. I really liked the wedges when I went to there facility for the fitting.

I'm trying to wait until it's a little warmer to demo a driver. You get 10 days to demo so I plan to play at least 6 rounds. I typically play 9 due to time, but I can squeeze 6 rounds in 10 days plus 2 range days. Gotta get my $20 worth. 🤣

Got my Sycamore putter from pre-owned list, was new in plastic.

I took the mid-mallet, looks and feel very high quality, I'm also amazed on the roll of the ball.

Hard fight with my Scotty gamer...

The pre-owned clubs I've gotten from them have been really really good.  Though I wish I had seen that Sycamore before you snatched it because that's one I have my eye on as well

BTW the "10 days" isn't exactly ironclad. If you tell them you need an extra week or so, they're pretty lenient. They want to make sure you get a reasonable trial.

That said, it sounds like you'll have no trouble getting it done in 10 days.

If I get one I plan to hit every course within distance. But it's good to know since Portland can rain any minute and could stay a week or longer.

Technically "pre-owned" but listed in new condition. Came with the shrink wrap still on the head and it looks like it has never hit a ball, so definitely lives up to "new"...

Played with a guy last week who had almost all Sub 70 clubs in his bag. Couldn’t say enough good things about the clubs and the company. I have 2 hybrids at the top of my bag that don’t always behave (I don’t carry fairway woods). I ordered a 3 hybrid from the pre-owned EBay site to give it a try. Hope it works so I can add the pro 2 hybrid and kick them out of the bag!

Well, thanks to an influx of pre-owned clubs being listed and the 10% off sale, I was able to snag a set of 699 Pros. Not exactly the shafts I wanted but at the price I got them for, easy enough to replace those. Excited to give these a try against my Cobra Forged Tec's to see the difference

10% off sale? I’m looking at buying some irons. What’s this sale you speak of? I don’t see anything on their website. Thanks
