Sub 70 Clubs

Every interaction I’ve had with the people at Sub 70 has been absolutely fantastic, and really like their products and what they’re trying to accomplish.

I’ll say though that the last couple of times that I’ve been on their website, it looks like the prices have increased?

For me just today I went on the TM site to check out the cost to custom order a set of ‘23 P770’s, and the cost for a set Sub 70 659 CB’s cost around the same?

With the track record of companies like TM, Cally, Srixon etc, it’s going to tough for Sub 70 to beat them out in a similar price range for me, despite really wanting to support them since they’re such awesome people.

It does seem by the time you pick a shaft, maybe the custom ferrules and boom, $1000.

It was $1,152 + tax for me (Canadian Dollars) for a set of 5-PW with PX 6.0 shafts.

Not much cheaper than a set of ‘23 P770’s custom made with the same shaft.

I get $1500 for a set of 8 p790 with PX 6.0......set of 8 659 CB with PX is $1000......tapers are more but they don't offer the standard PX in taper in 5.5, 6.0, or 6.5 only 7.0, which for comparison was $1032 as were the other PX tapers (less the blackout).  This is US prices.....I'd.consider $500 significant!

I’m not trying to start any arguments, like I said I really like the people at Sub 70 and they’ve treated me well.

Just went through both the Sub 70 site and the TM site though and built a custom set of 5-PW 659-CB and ‘23 P770 5-PW with the exact same shafts (PX 6.0), grips (Lamkin Crossline Mid), and specs (1 Up and +1”) and came out with a difference of exactly $302.16 (Canadian Dollars).

$300 to me is not a big enough difference when comparing the products of an up and coming company (which again I really like) vs the pedigree and track record of TaylorMade (or another major OEM).

What either of us determine is “significant” is totally subjective. For me there’s not a huge difference between around $1,100 + tax vs $1,400 + tax.

No worries on my part.  I'm not in either market as it relates to irons, IMO both are overpriced!

Well that we can agree on.

Although I’ll say that I’ve been looking at used Irons over the last month with all the sales going on, and when you look at the cost of used Iron sets (at least in Canada), the price tags on brand new custom Irons starts to look a lot more reasonable.

For example, the cheapest set of ‘20 P770’s I could find was in the $950-$1K range. So for me needing irons to be 1 Up and +1”, once I add the cost of extensions, adjustments, and new grips, it ends up being pretty much the exact same price as one of these new 2022-23 irons fully customized.

At the end of the day everyone has to make decisions that best fit their own budgets and their own games though.

These on the other hand…🤤

Yeah the new wedge line looks awesome, the 659 look awesome but what on earth happened with the 699? A step backward in looks that's for sure.

I will say pricing the new 699 the same as their forged offerings is going to lead to that line selling less!

I think that garish badge on the back will do that more so than the price point.

The originals look better upside down, no doubt....but I'd not hesitate to try them if they were in my price point, and they looked good at address.  It's possible the v2 are an improvement in every other area!

They must've changed the pricing --When i bought the 659CB's i got 3-AW (9 clubs) plus the 2 JB wedges for 2 G-notes. I thought that was a really good deal.

Of course i could've spent it on hookers and drugs since i just got PXG's a month later

I'm sure they will perform excellently, but these days everything performs well it seems so why play something you don't like looking at? That said, I love the looks of their forged irons.

I'm 99% sure the 659 line were $109 a club just a few days ago, now they are $125. Add in a Modus shaft and now you're spending $150 per...I love Sub70 but they are creeping too close to the big OEM's in pricing to be considered the great deal they once were.

If it hasn't happened already, equivalent increases from the big OEMs will be coming.

FWIW i just checked sub70 Canada and an 8-piece set of 659s is still 1155$ CAD. That is still a very very good deal IMO

Now with any DTC company if you want to go custom shafts and stuff sometimes that will get the price up a bit. For example a big OEM guy like Cobra is pretty inexpensive and has any shaft options (Even Modus 130) at no-upcharge.

But if you can use the shafts DTC guys offer thats still a damn good deal. I have KBS tour in my 659CB for example which were stock.

Just got my set of 659CB's and couldn't be happier with them. With the upcharge shaft as well as custom ferrule and upcharge grips was still able to get them under $1000 which for a 4-PW set I think is very good. Not to mention got them within a week of ordering. Have bounced around between Zx7's, MP20, Apex Pro, Cobra CB/MB and would put the 659's up there with all of them. First time on the course felt great and love the new sole design. Top line on the CB's are a little thick in the shorter irons so think I am going to go to the TC's 8-PW here soon.

From what I’ve read, the CB has a thinner top line than the TC.

I really like the Sub 70 products.  My only rub is that their business model doesn’t allow guys that like to tinker or have the skills, to build the way they want.  I’d be much more interested if I could buy just heads.  Sure, they can get me a shaft I want.  But, then I’m paying more than if I bought the shafts myself.

How many here really want to add grips and ferrules that make the clubs your own?  I sure do and I want them to be MY choice.  How many here have shafts that were pulls from another set and just want to try them in a new head?  This should be a standard operating procedure for DTC.

I have a set of Takomo 201 heads that I bought during the holiday just waiting for the BB&F ferrules to arrive.  I have a set of TT Elevate shafts that were pulls just waiting to be installed.  THAT’s the way I want to do business as the customer.
