I don't agree with the reason provided above but from a bookmakers point of view these odds are totally understandable. For starters Rory's 2019 form is very good despite a lot negativity because of the lack of a W.

This is the strongest field this tournament has had since a SoF of 885 in 2005.

No. It's not about ranking the Tour, it's about ranking the events. I'm a big fan of the ET and generally think it's a better run tour, but compare the strength of fields of the events and you will see why people might feel that generally the PGA Tour events rank more.

 

The "strongest" non-major, non-WGC field on the ET for 2018 in would have ranked 16th on the PGA Tour, just below the Valspar.

More stats. Just what we need. There's more to enjoying a tournament or whether it's even a good event than the strength of the field. It's not that simple. The US PGA claims the strongest field in golf, every year and the players always makes a similar argument. Does that make them the best tournaments? Hardly. I'd say most people on here including you would laugh at that suggestion.

 

Good grief. Nobody (except for you just now) said anything about enjoyment, quality of entertainment, or "best". those are subjective to the viewer. The conversation was regarding relative strength of the events, and where they could be ranked, yes, using statistical measures. Because how else would you quantify them?

 

 

And by the way, The PGA Championship IS the strongest field in golf. Year in and year out. The PGA Tour's claim is directly attributed to its ongoing war to make it "the fifth Major". Sure it's the strongest non Major field (usually) but often times The Open Championship is stronger, field wise. And the Masters? The tradition unlike any other? The one that everyone wants to win? Weakest field of the Majors and even weaker than some WGC, but it's regarded as the "best". There's nothing wrong with that, because it's subjective.
