If I'm playing with a new group, no trash talk. With our regulars, the talk starts before the first peg is put in the ground. Friendly ribbing makes it all the more fun.

It's all in fun. A buddy of mine and myself brag about how we outdrove each other, when we both bunt it out there 2 and a quarter.

I played a fair bit with a guy who would come up with the early gloat. We were playing one day with automatic presses for half the original bet. After 12 holes he and his partner were 3up, 1up, 3up, 1up. He started getting cocky and talking about what he was going to spend his winnings on. His partner was standing off to the side with his head in his hands listening to this. The early gloat. Big mistake and we called him on it. We wound up winning 5 of the last 6 holes to win quite a bit. There was a LOT of gloating done after that. But it was all in good spirits throughout.

 

I would say how I reacted to the OP's opponent would depend on the spirits the game had been played in and if he was in your face about it or just happy to have won. If he was just happy to have won, then sure I guess it's a little childish to react like that, but I wouldn't be upset about it. If he was in my face about it, then I'd think he was a jerk and probably not play with him again.

In the realm of competition gloating over winning is going to happen and so is brooding over losing. Unfortunately, we cannot control this.

All we can control is how we react to it.

The only true way to shut up someone that gloats w/ a HC is to play them straight up with no HCs. It’s a simple and effective way of knocking them off the pedestal they have so graciously placed themselves on, but if they accept your terms it should also be a humbling experience for them as well.
