What up with Jordan?

"Dating to his days as an apple-cheeked junior, he’d been a dominant presence at every level, with a steady progression each year. “He was the older brother who, if there’s a basketball hoop, he’d be standing in front of it, blocking it and swatting it away 25 feet – he won everything growing up,” said fellow Texas native Will Zalatoris. “I’ve admired him. We really owe a lot of our success to him. Whatever he accomplished, that was the bar, and if we even sniffed it, we knew that we were doing all right.” "

Wow, I know Spieth was a good junior/amateur player, but I didn't realize how dominant he was.

Read the article and all I can think of is that he's an idiot.  Golf history is littered with golfers who tried to play with an injury and failed.  Valuable years wasted.

My view of Spieth has changed over the years....used to love him, now i just view him as sort of a whiney guy.....nothing too major, but i have been waiting to hear an excuse why he has been bad for almost 3 years.....and here we have it.......im not sure how i feel about his story.....if he gets back to winning, maybe ill feel like this was more legit....im not sure.

cant wait for the Fowler excuse to hit the internet

That Golf Digest article seems a little far fetched:

"His decision to play through pain rather than undergoing arthroscopic injury is one he now regrets, as it forced him to use a weaker grip and resist important swing changes pushed by his coach Cameron McCormick."

"The technical explanation for how the injury affected his game isn't too technical at all: Forced to use a weak grip to avoid pain, his club face opened, and he was forced to flip at impact."

So on the one hand you're telling me he chose to play through the pain. And on the other hand, you're telling me he was "forced" to use a weak grip to avoid pain?

Hmm, which is it? Was he playing through pain or avoiding pain? If he actually knew/thought that the bone chip was causing him to play much worse because of a weak grip, wouldn't he fix it?

You're telling me he couldn't find 10 weeks in the offseason (including maybe skipping a couple tournaments) to do the arthroscopic surgery and recovery?

Maybe he actually didn't realize that the weak grip was so hurting his play at the time. That would make more sense.

To me if he was truly that hurt, why play? Rest up heal up

I am not sure that he was claiming to be “that hurt” so to speak.

In the press conference yesterday, he had essentially said that whilst it was painful, he was able to play with it. If he was still able to play and practice with it then I can see how he got to the point of carrying on playing but having to make adjustments to get around it.

Now if it caused him to make adjustments then I can definitely see there being an argument as to how sensible it was to continue playing particularly with the benefit of hindsight however, pain alone for a professional sportsman is not necessarily a reason to shut it down.

A little confusing.  Sounds like it's not really fixed based on what he says near the end?   Has it healed, should he still get surgery or it could pop back up as an issue?

That was so bad and so frustrating to watch. Ugh it’s tough being a JS fan. Wolff played so bad today he should’ve won by 5.

Very frustrating being a fan, but for me that's part of the ride. He's getting close and match play is a different beast and I got the sense he was making decisions he normally wouldn't in a stroke play event.

Either way, he let today slip and could have slammed the door on Wolff. One of the announcers mentioned this was like watching a pillow fight and that was unfair to pillows, lol.

It was awful.  Wolfe had to be 4-5 over par. He hit some of the worst tee balls I’ve seen lately.  That swing is the most timing oriented swing I’ve ever seen.

Yah he really left the door open. But Spieth wouldve been probably at least +3 on the last 2 holes alone.

Still looks way better than 1 year ago. Hoping he peaks in time for the Masters in 2 weeks.

I haven't really watched JS for a while. Surprised to see his wrist so bowed at the top of his BS. That seems like a big departure from how he hit it in his prime.

He's really rehearsing that bowed wrist as well in his practice swings.  I guess he's trying to hit a fade and take out the left side, with the added bonus of a bit more distance, a la DJ.  Those fairways were firm, but he was past his playing partners pretty often today.

I've read about the wrist injury and the weak grip. If you strengthen your grip and don't change your wrist position at the top, you will end up with a more bowed wrist. I wonder if that's what has happened?

If you strengthen your grip (left hand) and don't change your wrist position at the top, your club face is more closed.  if you strengthen your grip and get your wrist more bowed at the top, you will really get a closed face - like DJ.

If you weaken your grip and want the same club face position at the top, you had better bow your wrist.

He's a good player. No doubt about that. I think what ails him is that he got really good really fast without overthinking things. Once he became elite, he suddenly became someone who thinks he needs to be super precise about his game. You see it in his "discussions" with he caddie. He's talking about everything else (blades of grass, wind down to the 0.001 mph, his hair being messy, I've got to hit it on this little spot with 7/8's swing with a closed face, etc...) rather than see the shot and hit the shot. He's become lost in the minutia of the swing and can't play at an elite level any more. It's called paralysis by analysis and I don't know if he can reverse it. Sure, he can play great, but he also will go out and shite the bed for any number or holes or rounds. And the worse he plays, the worse his thinking process gets. At least that's what I see on TV.

That and his fundamental swing flaw that totally relies on timing and when it's off, it's a crushing hook or big block. Other than that, he's good.

he needs 10 single putts a round to keep up with the big boys
