I think there are two main reasons for that:

1. Reid's openness with information on the 2008 product line and his willingness to hear any comments or suggestions that we may have [thanks again, Reid].

2. A large amount of pent-up enthusiasm for the MacGregor name grounded in its storied heritage.

Regardless, looks like '08 is going to be a fun year!

Barry Schneider is gone?

very bloody coup. I guess firing ALL the sales reps last year wasn't enough. These, too, will flop. Where are the retailers who will carry these? I'll tell you, nowhere. Mac is NOT retailer friendly. And I'm not guessing..

You may be right. A number of very large dealers I know of have no intention of carrying these even after viewing the pictures. One said he would order them as a favor to customers that wanted a set but the others said they would not stock or carry demos of these clubs. Maybe Watts will carry a few sets but don't count on it. They don't care if Greg Norman is the CEO or not as two of the retailers said. They've pretty much tired of MacGregor from a business and product standpoint. Maybe they can work their way back slowly like Cobra did years ago but they don't have Fortune Brand money behind them..

Would you be so kind as to elaborate as to who at what large dealer has no intention of carrying these? Thank you.

The original post looks like the cavities are a smoother finish in the CB. I can't say I appreciate the milling on these. Makes them look unfinished. Personal tastes I guess, but "mill marks" in the cavity don't do a thing for me. If, however, it means the head weights are more consistent because the heads are fully CNC milled, then I am all for it!

Mr. Divots,

The pictures that have been posted here are of very early prototypes. The milling on the finished product will be extremely precise and very attractive. In fact, in addition to the back cavity...the faces and square grooves of each iron are also precision CNC milled so the tolerances are minimal from club to club. We are using the same milling process on the MT Pro-M and MT "DW" wedges.

Thanks, Reid.

Reid,

Thanks for the response. I know many folks are excited about the look of these irons (myself included) and hope that the attention to detail on the production side is done in a way to make these sets something special. Hopefully with tight specs as far as head weights, and perhaps making these heads available to reputable clubmakers for assembly, there would be reason for people to choose these over other brands. Golf consumers, thanks to boards like these, are becoming very educated and aware of the importance of a well-built set of clubs. While not everyone will necessarily desire a set of fully "blueprinted" irons, the availability of such an option would be much-appreciated.

Perhaps it has already come up in this thread, (too many pages to go through at this point) but will MacGregor have any sort of program in place to sell to clubfitters for custom assembly? I know as a Golf OEM, many companies "cringe" at the idea of being viewed as a "component" brand. But it would be a way to differentiate the MacGregor brand in an otherwise very homogeneous golf retail landscape. Everyone offers "Dynamic Gold" shafts, 1025 Carbon steel forgings, etc. The end products, often times, are all over the map for specs and overall consistency of playability. More and more, people are buying and immediately tearing apart the clubs to have a clubfitter make them fit and perform optimally. It would be great to have the option to have the set built to spec for consumers that are inclined to do so without having to "scrap" the shafts.

Mr. D:

Are you preaching or posting? The first paragraph sounds like a papal blessing!! :) :D

Goodness it's taken me like 30 minutes to read through long enough to get to reply myself haha. The new line looks AMAZING. Very smart move. I hope the woods look as good as those irons. So....am I to understand, that as of next year I will be able to order the following:

3-5 Pro-C 6-PW Pro-m, gunmetal finish with milled faces, and custom grind soles with Project X

with matching gunmetal MT Pro wedges, and a Bobby Grace anser style putter ??????????

Cuz that's about as good as it gets.

Lets see some pics of the woods and other irons. And what are you guys thinking as far as staff and carry bags? Maybe some pics?

Gentlemen, we are probably within a month of seeing the NEW MacGregor line or a portion of it released and on sale to the public. Last I heard, they were looking at a December launch.

MACGREGOR has to create some fireworks! They really need to create whatever fanfare they can to announce this new line. Unfortunately, all most people recall about them is not so good and it is time to recall the legacy of this product line.

I say... come out with a bang! There is a bunch of posts on this and it truly illustrates that the people can move on and forget anything bad they knew or perceived to be bad.

I think MacGregor has a great reputation. This new line shows their new commitment to getting back to the roots.

Someone just mentioned they would love to see the famous green and white bag again. I could not agree more!

If you all recall... a few years ago when Taylor Made came out with that really beaufitul "Master's" bag... green and white with the old fashioned Taylor Made logo. That was a neat bag. MacGregor really needs to do something like this.

I wish them luck. MacGregor and I go back a long way. I used their clubs as a young man. I would love to have them back!
