NEW MACGREGOR IRON AND WEDGES

Recommended Posts

Reid,

Just to make sure... the Gunmetal option will be available on both the Blades as well as the Cavity Back Irons?

Thanks!

Reid,
Sorry if i am getting impatient, can we get some specs on the irons? 5-iron = 60.5 lie, 28 loft at 38" & D3 swingweight?
How bout the feedback you have recieved on the feel at impact, Are they "buttery" like the mizunos, or are they more "clicky" like the titleist?
Are the sole grinds more towards a sweeper or a digger? (rolled leading edge with slight cambered sole and on the short irons some heel relief)?

I feel like a kid waiting for christmas morning. (hurry up and get here).

I will definitely be putting the MT's at the top of my list. I used to have a set of Tourney's before I got a set of Hogan's years ago. They were awsome clubs and sometimes I wish I still had them. The past offerings from MacGregor were too gimmicky and not in the MacGregor tradition IMHO. This new line-up will put MacGregor back on the map of amateurs and pro's alike. Heck, look at the number of responses to this original post. I will have to get my MacGregor Caps and Staff Bag (original green and white, folks) out again.
I would like to volunteer my services to help test your new product line. (free of charge of course) :) <---- my best, cheesiest smile.
I am sure you have a lot of Professional feedback to date , i could help provide the low handicapper feedback, think of it as the die-hard working-man golfer feedback.

ahem ahem, keep me in mind for product testing.... :)
Why didn't I think of offering to "volunteer"!??! :D

I think Reid would have no problems find "volunteers" on GolfWRX! :)

I've been pretty quiet of late but this thread has got me very excited, especially the part about the pro-c and pro-m being available to us lefties by March next year (although being in the UK means I'll have to wait a bit longer no doubt). These clubs are gorgeous - fantastic job and to me really recaptures the essence of the Macgregor brand. I only replaced my irons this year but I feel another (combo) set coming on for 2008

Reid,

While Don White and Bobby Grace seem to be the stars of the show in Macgregor, I also think you guys have other top class gentlemen who make the boat rock: from Jim Bode, to Walt Davis, to Arthur Lockett - at least all three of them played a part in building me the golf set that was most special to me ever, from my first sub-70 round, to my first club championship win, and many others. I may be in Macgregor "limbo" now, but I see myself with all 14 Macgregor clubs in the bag by fall of 2008 or early 2009. Right now, it is just drool-drool-drool and finding stuff to sell so I can save up for these Macgregors and dream up the set I want to play with.

I wish you all the best for 2008!

At first glance that diamond on the face of the wood didn't appeal to me, but the more and more I look at it, the more and more I'm starting to absolutely love it!!!

Like everyone else, I have been following this thread since the beginning. The Pro M/C pics have been my computer background just reminding me of my future purchase =) Thank you Reid for including the bio on Don White - have always heard his name but now that I know his story, it just makes me that much more excited about these irons.

Lastly, how cool is it that the president of a golf company takes the time to chime in on a board like this. That goes a long way in my book and only further endears me to MacGregor Golf.

My biggest worry is that a company struggling to become a player in the industry again may not have the ability to keep up with the demand. Especially on the customization side. I hope that worry never becomes reality because I can see Mac MT fw's, hybrids, irons and wedges in my bag come spring.

Like so many others, I've been quietly following this topic from the beginning, and am so thoroughly impressed to see you, Reid, reach out to the people on this forum for thoughts, suggestions, and general comments as you prepare to introduce this new line-up.

I've always been a sucker at heart for the classic iron designs and styles, but after playing Hogans for the past 6 years, somehow got sucked into a set of X Forged this summer. As I almost expected, they are just not working out. Now along comes this thread and I think I know what I'm going to want to have for next year, a set of the MT-Pros. Just awesome looking sticks with great options all around!!
In the latest posting it is mentioned that the finishes are satin or gunmetal. I thought initially they also mentioned mirror chrome. Of the 15 sets of MacGregors I own only one set is satin---all the rest are mirror chrome. Is that option available or was it ever??
From post #239, page 8:

Q: Is the topline bead-blasted on both the MB's and CB's?

Reid, Answer: Although the images show on GolfWRX are a bright chrome, these were just of some initial prototypes. Satin chrome will be the standard option for the new irons. Both bright chrome and gunmetal special order options are being considered. Regarding the top line, it will be treated so it isn't highly reflective.

Sandy - I spent about 30 minutes yesterday reading through all the pages, and the above stuck in my mind. Hope that was what you were looking for.

Well it looks as if my interest in the new Macgregor clubs has been elevated as my new bag of Mizuno clubs were stolen at a friends club on Friday. I have always had a bag of traditional looking clubs and forged irons - just can't get away from the classics! I much prefer the looks of the new Macgregor products over the Mizunos and look forward to the the chance to demo these clubs.

Reid,

Thank you for coming online here and talking to your customer base like this. Real neat to see this happening.

Also the article you added about Don White added a level of credibility to your products that is sorrily missing in todays marketing blitz with some other manufacturers. I have a question below...

I was reading were Don White was quoted some 8 years ago...

http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/index.php?s=...st&p=799662

Perfection for most amateurs usually comes in the form of a forgiving cast iron. The best players still prefer forgings even though, according to White, it is becoming difficult to find a well-made forged club these days. "I don't know how most of the stuff for sale can even be used," says White. Even lots of the Tour guys don't know it, but they're playing with junk."

That is very interesting. They are playing with some bad equipment in his eyes. I like his pride and confidence. Then he talks about what separates the normal from the great designs and grinds...

According to White, the most important aspect of making an iron is getting the correct smearing – the blending of the lines and protrusions on the club head so that the weighting is even while the club remains pleasing to the eye. White says irons' shortcomings are usually on the top of the toe, in the heel, and in the slope between the hozel and the top line. The worst built part of most irons, White says, is the sole. The leading and back edges of many are not round enough, causing the irons to dig into the turf instead of sliding over it. "Amateurs don't look for such things," says White, "but to pros it's the small things that count."

My question is this. Did the new "production" MT pro C and M incorporate the attributes Don says are the "most important"? The spearing, and sole leading edge issue he talked on? Looking at the specific pictures it looks like the heads are beautiful. I wonder if the Don White magic is in the soles of these heads? I hope so and hope the leading edges arnt diggers.

Look at the picture that was in the very first post here. If this is the production head- I love it!!! Any words about the sole?
wedge is looking very vokey-ish with the lines coming out of the symbol on the back.....

but yes overall very very sweet irons!!
Actually, the Vokey is more of a copy of the MT. The earliest photo I can find is of a 1955 Tourney M80. The winged MT logo is on the crown, courtesy of "The Golf Club Identification & Price Guide IV" Golfworks Maltby.

Can you comment on whether the hosels of the irons are welded to the heads or if they are one pice construction. Most manufacturers are using 2 piece construction techniques today.

Thanks
Who other than Miura (holy grail) uses welded hosels??? Not Mizuno, Not Titleist, Not Callaway, Not Taylor Made, Not Nike, Not Cobra, Not TEE, Not Bridgestone/Precept/Tourstage, Not Tiger :D . Or is this just a sneaky way of asking if Miura is doing the forging? If they are it would only be the 2-9 because the wedges they show don't look like ditch digging tools with .21 offset.....

This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
