NEW MACGREGOR IRON AND WEDGES

Recommended Posts

I'll be interested to see if the wedges are also forged 1025 or 8620. The grinds look pretty good.

Don White will never get the respect that he truly deserves, but these designs might help to change that.

All 3 are 1025 forged. MB's, CB's, and the wedges.

Yep, found my new MB's

You and many others. Look at the muscle backs these have. Got to feel good with that design. I like the chrome also. I am normally a satin lover, but the chrome looks so good I cant deny them.

Regarding forgings...in our R&D department is a gentleman named Jim Bode. Jim is an world renowned expert in both club design and metalurgy. Jim sourced the new forged heads for us and has been working closely with this vendor to ensure that the quality is the best available. Cost was not a factor in choosing the source of our heads, just quality. In fact, we'll be spending more per club on our forged heads than at any time in recent history. Once you hit them, this commitment will be evident :good: .

Thanks, Reid.

Reid- We cant wait to. Yum. I am a forged snob. Love to go as traditional as my game can afford. These sets are candy to my eyes and am very excited for all of you at Mac. Looks like Jim, Don and all the others in the Mac team have a great first look here. Very exciting!

They are absolutely beautiful, however unless they come out with a line for the average golfer there is no way they are going to be able to make it. The numbers will not be there.

I cannot begin to tell you how enthusiastic I was when Barry bought the company and they put out the v-foil line..and then nothing but junk...the only problem with these is exactly what you said.. these are for the scratch golfer (even though lots of fools who play to a 6 will buy them).. there aren't enough legitimate low single digit players changing irons every season like the rest of us fools....it is tough to get players to switch and these are for players..and posers.

edit...what's with 1025 carbon?... think that's a mistake if the claim is to source the finest forgings.. maybe there is something I need to know about forgings but to me the difference between say a mizzy grain flow at 1025 and a bridgestone or cally 1020 endo is dramatic... say what you will (to each his own and some like the harder metal) but the very best tend to like softer forgings... A good friend and one of the best playing caddies (hard to argue with a guy who has shot a 62) in the game plays v-foil blades and will be super excited to see these babies... way to go Mac!

Iam very excited about the new offerings by MacGregor. Nice price point too. I know $799 may be standard, but some irons are at $850 or $900 etc. Iam adding two pictures as well. The first is the reason I like Macgregor (it is the wear marks on my Muirfield 20th 7iron) and the second is the back of my colokrom 9iron. Does that look familiar?

Sorry don't know how to get the pics any bigger

Did I miss the part in Reid's post that said Macgregor is NOT coming out with clubs for high handicaps? These new clubs appear to me to be the start of a new "image" change at Macgregor and as Reid stated, more clubs will follow. Macgregor tried the trendy, gimmick clubs that have now flooded the market by everyone from TM to Nickent and it didn't work; even with Badds. (I happen to like the Mactec line though) Macgregor looks to be doing the right thing by coming out with clubs that alot of OEM's aren't making right now: the traditional looking club. I don't know about everyone else on this forum, but I aspire to play better clubs one day. And that means smaller CB's or even blades. Mac is on the right track and the buzz has already started on here. As a golfer who started 10 years ago and has only played Macgregors because I wanted to play what Jack played, I can only hope Macgregor gets the buzz to follow on the PGA tour as well. Exposure is the key. Nike is a living example of that.

I used to play MacGregor Tourney's 15 years ago until I got a set of Hogans. I have been thinking of replacing my Hogans but may have to wait til these beauties come out. What a classic look! MacGregor's latest offerings have looked to gimicky to me and it's nice to see them return to what made them a great clubmaker in the first place.

Freakin' sweeet! I had heard that those guys were coming out with some awesome new once piece forgings. I can't wait to hit these. By Bye MACTEC, HELLOOO MT!

Haha, I wonder if MT is an abbreviation for MacTec. I seriously don't know, it could mean something else.

MT is an old abbreviation - Way (way) before MacTec. Stand for Magregor Tournament (Tourny)

New direction at MacGregor - new clubs - new chairman.

MacGregor tabs Norman as chairman

By JOHN STEINBREDER

Senior Writer

MacGregor Golf is expected to announce today the appointment of Greg Norman as its chairman, Golfweek has learned.

The move culminates a leadership change that began in July when Norman and other board members relieved MacGregor CEO and majority shareholder Barry Schneider of his operational duties and began a strategic review of the Albany, Ga.-based clubmaking enterprise.

Norman’s appointment coincides with Schneider’s exit from the company. Schneider has relinquished his remaining roles and “surrendered his ownership share to MacGregor,” according to a company official. In addition, Norman has helped lead a recapitalization of MacGregor along with two existing investors. That effort was designed to strengthen the company’s balance sheet, give MacGregor greater financial flexibility and provide resources for continued growth.

The company also has embarked on a search for a new CEO. Duff Meyercord – a partner with New York-based turnaround specialists Carl Marks Advisory Group who took over as president and chief operating officer when Schneider stepped down in July – will continue to oversee global operations until a permanent leader is found.

“We have to get back to the basics of what the company is all about,” Norman told Golfweek in an exclusive interview. He added that he envisions MacGregor providing products that can be described as “modern classics” and likely would compete against brands such as Mizuno.

“Also, we need to make things far more integrated from an operational standpoint,” Norman said. “I believed we had to empower middle management more and have them be the ones who make and implement the decisions as we make them more accountable.”

Norman expects to be active in that process as chairman, which makes sense considering he says his investment in the company “will be the biggest business deal he has ever made.”

“The title speaks for itself, and while I will not be involved in the day-to-day management, I will have input into everything from the cosmetics of the products to R&D to decisions on marketing and the overall strategy of the company,” he said. “I also want to make sure our employees understand the direction of the company and the places we want to take it. I am a huge proponent of that, and the idea that you have to lead from the top down, that you have to lead by example and make the people who work with you understand where you want to take the business. Do that, and they work with much more enthusiasm.”

Norman did not provide details of the recapitalization of privately-held MacGregor, offering only that he led it along with Sankaty Advisors, an affiliate of Bain Capital in Boston, and the Gordon P. Getty Family Trust, both of whom had been involved with the company for five years.

Norman joined the board of MacGregor last fall after acquiring a minority stake in the company. The entity includes MacGregor clubs and outerwear and the Greg Norman Collection apparel business. Collectively, MacGregor generates roughly $150 million in annual revenues, according to company officials.

Sure hope for the companies well being that they do sell a lot of these clubs. From a classic look standpoint they are one of the few that would be producing a traditional looking muscle back. Obviously Taylor Made, Callaway, and even Mizuno have shown a inclination to produce more hybrid type muscle backs rather than traditional muscle backs.

I sure hope Norman doesn't have too much of his own capital sunk in this venture. The old joke about golf club companies always comes to mind when something like this happens. "How do you become a millionaire in the golf club industry"? "You have a billionaire buy/invest in a faltering golf club company?.

Hey Reid,

Any Chance you can get Mr. Norman on here as well? Would be cool to have one of the best ball strikers EVER on this board!

From a standpoint of staff bags, I would also chime in on the old classic, green and white bag with the black "MacGregor" scripted down the side of the bag.

I think MacGregor has to get back to some roots. They could take that old look and still make it retro enough to suit the market today.

I can remember just like it was yesterday Jack Nicklaus and his caddie ( Angelo ) walking down the famed and hallowed fairways of some of the best courses in the world. When I saw that bag... man.. I just loved it! MacGregor back in that day was the cream of the crop of equipment. Those clubs were played by the likes of Tom Watson, Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Tom Weiskopf to name a few.

I think MacGregor is trying to get back on track. They certainly have Don White and he is the absolute best! If he truly has anything to do with their new iron line... you can bet it will be tops!

Reid,

I was an honor to speak with you on the phone today and glad to know that we have the same thinking to bring Mac Gregor to a different level.

I'm sure with your great team in your office, we will see this a very visible goals.

I can't wait to see and hear more news from you! :clapping:

Regards!

joe

I might also add that Reid is really a great guy! How many people at his level of any company get down in the trenches with us? I have already received two emails from Reid and I can tell you that he has personally put two of his associates on my email. When available... I will be back to playing MacGregor irons. The new CB's are out of sight. I think if they take a few of our recommendations about finish and so on... they will do great! I am also looking forward to see what they have in store for us on drivers and the rest of the line.

Best wishes to you Reid!

I look forward to working with your staff on my personal set of irons.

If anyone's interested…I'll be back late next week with some sneak peeks at some other new MT products in the Iron, Wedge, Driver, Fairway and Hybrid categories. Bobby Grace has also been working hard on some great new stuff.

Reid,

Many thanks from all of us here for sharing...to say we are "interested" would be a big understatement! Can't wait to see more of the new offerings from the company that has been the standard of the industry for many decades.

Best Regards,

Harry

Hello everyone,

As promised last week, I've rounded up some questions that have been coming in on this thread that I don't believe have been answered yet. I'll do my best to get caught up now!

Do you have a topline shot of the blades?

The top line shot of the blades are on the original post that Shortknocker displayed on 10/12.

MacGregor coming out with a Greg Norman line of clubs?

10/14/07

Oakie ISI

What involvement does Greg have with the company?

In case you haven't seen the recent press release about Greg's involvement with MacGregor, here is the link:

At this time we don't have a Greg Norman line of products planned for 2008. However, some limited edition products designed with Greg's involvement are on the drawing board for the future.

Is there any way that the irons will be available in a satin crome finish option?

10/15/07

mr divots

Is the topline bead-blasted on both the MB's and CB's?

Although the images show on GolfWRX are a bright chrome, these were just of some initial prototypes. Satin chrome will be the standard option for the new irons. Both bright chrome and gunmetal special order options are being considered. Regarding the top line, it will be treated so it isn't highly reflective.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10/14/07

Claus

Will Miura make 100 sets of these?

No, but MacGregor certainly will :man_in_love:

Can heads be available to a select group of custom club fitters?

Yes, we are planning on this. If you have some suggestions on shops that you would like us to contact, please let me know via e-mail ([email protected])

10/16/07

Any chance we can see pics from every angle of the MB's?

10/18/07

Spin Doctor

Can there be a 360* view of every club on the website?

I'll get some images shot as requested and post them soon. We'll put 360º views on the "wish list" for when the new MG website comes on-line (early December).
