In the video you see a gua sha technique to release the jaw muscles, which relaxes the entire posterior chain because the kinetic muscle chain goes from the tongue/jaw to the foot.

Fascia is the envelope of the muscles, imagine like a saran wrap in that case going from the foot up the back/neck and tied to the jaw.

If the masseter muscle is too tight because of clenching primarily, it tightens the whole fascia, imagine pulling on one end of the saran wrap.

Also the position/alignment of the jaw is related to posture/muscle chains, like a person with a recessed jaw will bring the head position forward to open the airway, and if the jaw is protruded forward, the head will generally be positione d back.

If you have a misaligned jaw, there will be a misalignment of the shoulders.

When you do a physical effort, you want to neutralize the jaw as much as possible, thats why you see strongmen like Brian Shaw use a mouthpiece, to avoid asymmetry and create stability.

Tiger probably doesn't chew while swinging, but he chews between shots, creating unnecessary tension in his jaw/neck, its like if you are eating non stop basically when you chew gum

So Phil and Tiger are chewing gum and playing now... what benefit are they trying to achieve? Is chewing gum somehow helping Tiger keep his back loose?

I don't think they are aware of the link between the jaw and the muscle chains unfortunately so i don't know why they chew, maybe for stress control, but it won't keep the back loose for sure, if you wanna swing with the neck and back loose, put your tongue to your palate and relax your jaw as much as possible

I actually think Brandel was pretty spot on with his assessment this evening on Live From. Brooks is an interesting golfer and an interesting dude. He likes thong underwear, cool, no judgment here. He hits the ball a mile and seems to have a gear that maybe 5 other golfers on earth currently have. But it is a little odd that he is literally nowhere during the course of the PGA season then boom comes out and everyone is chasing him at the majors. Plus, the way Brooks was talking about his “team” (I guess consisting of his agent, his trainer and his caddie, oh and the head chef from the Floridian) was a little weird. I like back in the day when golfers would just give themselves all of the credit. Not he and the guy making his egg white scrambles.

Fair points. Want to address the last one. The ‘team’ especially outside of family is simply more involved and influential than the past. He’s just giving credit because it’s legit. They organize and help the young mans life massively. Also a young guy like brooks with gf only, isn’t going home to the same family type atmosphere jack/arnie and others did. It’s a different time and I think thanking “the team” is something every golfer does now, tiger and Phil included.

Id be willing to bet, that its related to a study recently that chewing gum prevents you from locking your jaw and that has decrease in performance on sports tasks. Shooting free throws and putting improved when players chewed gum. There have been several studies done on it recently. Locking of the jaw while concentrating restricts blood flow to the brain and a bunch of other fun physiological responses occur.

I have been a very good friend of Chef Parker for over 20 years. He does a great deal more than just make his breakfast., so believe me he is worthy of mention by Brooks on air. Michael is a key team member to many TOUR players . He keeps the rented house in order for the entire week with numerous tasks besides cooking. He is well regarded by his clients (and has been for years).....Rickie, Jordon, JT, Koepka,Duff, Zac Johnson, just to name a few. Chef Parker is now too a huge good luck charm as he has helped players in many victories. Plus Chef is a cool as hell guy to hang around.

I’m curious how this tournament will play out from a weather standpoint. Looks like some early rain and than thunderstorms starting in the afternoon. Seems like we will see golfers getting pulled on and off the course starting this afternoon and all weekend. Not sure who that favors. Older guys may have trouble loosening back up and maybe younger guys could get frustrated with all the delays. Pulling for Bryson. Nothing beats Masters week for me.

While that is technically true, it was done on a shorter/easier course than today, and not against the depth and talent of todays moderns fields. Also Tiger wasn’t 43 like today. Solid start from Tiger which is great, but with monsters like Brooks, Dechambeau, DJ, Rahm, and Co ahead of him, it’s going to be a tough ask for Tiger to win this.

In my 40 years of practicing dentistry I treated a lot of unhappy masseters (along with the other muscles of mastication) and witnessed first-hand some remarkable results. This video is pretty amazing. I am not familiar with what the technique is but given my own personal history with tight hamstrings and lower back issues, I'm thinking I should look into this.

Thanks for posting.

Guess I should have put a little winkle face after that - I thought you were suggesting chewing leads to back pain.

I want to agree (well, if Phil shoots 84 I won't be all that concerned) but seems like Tiger has had mixed results in damp, cooler conditions this year - really thought a day like yesterday was ideal for him.
